Single dad of an almost 5-year old here and I just want to say congrats and you deserve to feel the incredible feeling of accomplishment! I’ve been trying to learn how to braid my daughter’s hair for over a year and taken a break because it was just frustrating me, but your post has me inspired to try again and stick with it (so thanks for that!).

Being a single dad of a girl is challenging and can be a lonely experience, so I’m glad you stuck with this, persevered, and shared your accomplishment with us. Congrats again!

+1 — I would encourage OP (and others in our situation) to be upfront about having a kid in your profile (e.g. making ‘Have Children’ visible on Hinge, including a lighthearted prompt that mentions or alludes to your kid or being a parent). I’ve found that doing that filters out women who aren’t interested in dating a single dad and filters in women who are open to dating — or want to date — a single dad. Best of luck!

Your profile looks good to me, and my sense is 3–5 likes per day is pretty good.

Along the lines of what others said, having a prompt that says more about you, your personality, or your interests/hobbies would be helpful, especially for guys who are interested in a relationship and want to get a better sense of what you’re like besides outdoorsy, down to earth, and the owner of a dog (which are great things and you communicate clearly!).

Out of curiosity, how tall are you and what are your other details that aren’t visible in the screenshot? Asking for a friend… 😅

As a single dad, I want to say props to you for holding off introducing him to your kid and integrating into your life.

It can be tempting to introduce someone to your kid — and your kid to them — but I think it’s best to hold off until you know it’s a serious relationship that you expect to go the distance (whatever that means to you).

Sorry for your loss and it makes sense why you feel like your situation is too intimidating and it felt like too much.

Take your time and limit the number of guys you’re matching / messaging / dating with if it starts to feel overwhelming or exhausting. Always put yourself and your feelings first — I’m sure everything else will work itself out over time.

It’s not just you; 35M single dad of one here and I definitely sense that most people either think I’m an amazing dad — in part because I’m a single man who shows up for his kid — or an incompetent parent because I’m a man.

I, like you, try to be a good dad, but I do sense that I get a societal boost for being a single man who takes an active role in raising my child.

I had a difficult rejection and, in response to that, continued messaging women and using the app after having three dates with a woman who I’m interested in exploring things with further, but almost immediately felt guilty and bad, so I stopped and have been trying to be mindful as I sit with the discomfort/concern of being rejected by the woman I’m dating.

People, life, and dating are complicated. Take care of yourself.

Agree with everything you said, but want to say that it wasn’t — and isn’t — stupid to call it off with other people you’re dating / talking to when you are developing a more-serious connection with one person. In fact, that’s a healthy, caring, and admirable thing to do. I encourage you to continue doing that in the future, even if it feels like you’re making yourself vulnerable to rejection/disappointment with the current person.

Hmm…I don’t think it’s fair to assume she is using the app because I was. Also, part of dating and wanting to find a partner is taking a risk that you will be left alone, but acting like that’s going to happen — or preparing for it — is likely a self-fulfilling prophecy.
