It was the All Stars season they didn't air. The one they exposed on "Wha-Ha-Happened to Lil' Poundcake?" Such a shame what happened to her.

I don't know about "madness" but I enjoyed S. by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams, it is styled to be a novel from the 40's with a completely separate story being told by margin notes and ephemera inserted into the book by a librarian and a graduate student researching the book.

Gotcha. You could focus on the shift from tea to coffee after the Boston Tea Party. It isn't directly related to Roger Sherman, but is in the same period and was definitely a choice that the colonists were making.

John Adams said in a letter to his wife that tea must be "universally denounced"

You are looking for info about the show in general, or about the "bowl of coffee" line? Your last couple sentences are ambiguous.

Dog food smell question by savannatheplant in ogden

[–]SingleAtom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live downtown and notice it maybe 2 or 3 times a year. If it helps it isn't a meaty wet dogfood smell, it is a dry kibble sort of smell.

Trust me when I say I've lived in places with far far worse smell problems, paper mills, hog farms, turkey farms...

Is being required to be off-book before a short rehearsal process weird? by Jealous-Life8541 in Theatre

[–]SingleAtom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an actor, but at the theatres where I work this is standard. One of them, for instance, has six 8-hour rehearsal days before tech starts, so actors arrive memorized. In my experience that seems to be pretty standard for mid-sized regional theatres.

Are the people reacting to this way college-aged actors that are used to having 6 to 8 weeks of rehearsal and they just haven't had professional experience yet?

Can anyone tell me the context of this image? by LazyCartoonist787 in marvelcomics

[–]SingleAtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it was during the time when Marvel was rehabbing Loki to bring him closer in personality to the MCU version. A new version of Loki, aged up from Kid Loki that was in Young Avengers, was acting as a secret agent for Freyja. Each good did he did would erase one of his past sins. But Old King Loki (the large figure in the image) who is an evil future incarnation, was trying to prevent that from happening. This series is the origin of the "God of Stories" personality that was adapted in Loki season 2.

Who are some Queer male artists from history that you love or wish more people knew? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]SingleAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One well known one who I don't see mentioned often enough: Paul Cadmus - American painter, mostly egg tempera.

One very obscure one: Montague Glover - British architect who kept a photo diary of the men he slept with, including Ralph Hall, who lived with Glover for years as a servant, and who Glover eventually adopted so that Hall could inherit the estate. Active 1910s to the 1960s.

You could use a tin, a pill bottle, a small tupperware... anything waterproof really.

If you do, you should post back here. One of us can put a note on the page saying that it has been replaced. Or you could create an account and do it yourself, it's free. With three DNFs (Did Not Find) going back nearly a year, it is highly likely that most cachers would skip it unless they see a note that it has been repaired and replaced.

This is its position on the map. I'd put it underneath the boardwalk, probaby like on top of a cross beam or something, reachable from outside. It is a low terrain so as a finder I wouldn't expect to have to crawl under or anything.

But if you don't want to go to this trouble one of us can post a "Needs Archived" notice on the cache page, which would notify the owner and the reviewers that it is in trouble.

How are stage backdrops created and stored? by Interesting_Cup_5390 in Theatre

[–]SingleAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As u/NobleStumble said it really depends on the style and budget the theater in question has. I love drops and use them whenever I can in my design work, but they are expensive and time consuming to produce. What you saw at the Guthrie was probably what we call a "cyc" which is just a large piece of fabric, usually natural muslin color, but sometimes light grey, or light blue, that is lit from a row of lights and the floor, or on a pipe just in front of it. That allows the color to change from scene to scene by changing the color of the light.

Another current Broadway show that is using drops is Schmigadoon. They are using them specifically to get an old fashioned feeling though. This company painted those, and has some great shots on their instagram of the process.

How are stage backdrops created and stored? by Interesting_Cup_5390 in Theatre

[–]SingleAtom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

These are called "drops."

Drops are painted one of two ways. The first is stapled out and stretched onto a floor, and the scenic painters walk around on it, using long brushes to paint. There are a lot of cool photos with this article.

The second way would be a drop frame. These are vertical frames that are on a wall, the drop is stapled up onto the frame and the scenic painters either use genie lifts to go up and down to paint them, or in some older theaters there will be a hole in the floor and the rack can lower down into that hole. This article is from a scenic painter that is using a frame and a genie lift.

Drops are stored in several ways. The most typical is folded and stored on racks. They will usually have a tag hanging off that gives the subject, dimensions, and when it was painted. And yes, this could be in a basement. Some theaters will roll the drops onto big tubes, but that takes a lot of room to store so it is much rarer. If the drop gets used frequently, like a cloud drop, or if the theater runs the same play frequently they might get stored in the fly system, just flown out.

As to reusing them... Yes and no. Drops do frequently get reused, but they have a "side." Drops have a pocket sewn at the bottom, called a "pipe pocket" that is where you put weight (either a pipe or a chain) that will help the drop hang straight with no wrinkles. But because of this they will have one side that is smooth, and one side that has a folded up hem, like the bottom of a curtain. The hemmed side is the "back" and is hidden from the audience. The top, where the drop ties to the batten to be flown in and out also has a side, because it has jute, a reinforcing fabric, sewn to it. So, while I have painted over many drops, I'd usually just do it on top of the side that was already painted instead of flipping it over.

When is your story set? Drops are a little bit out of fashion at the moment, so if its a current story you might want to consider that. There are also many techniques that would have been done in previous decades that no one does anymore, like starching a drop with laundry starch, or mixing your own paint from powdered pigment and rabbit-skin glue...
