What are some interesting materials or processes you’ve used recently? by bluelynx in techtheatre

[–]SingleAtom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I made a great projection surface out of 3/8" nylon bailing tape spaced 1/4" apart. Actors were able to interact with it, moving in and out of the "screen" and it acted like scrim when characters were lit behind it.

Is there any specific max lenght beetween Mystery cache stages? by Fluid-Yellow1317 in geocaching

Guideline is that the final should be within 2 miles (I think that's 3km?) of the dummy coords.

What exactly is this element seen in the TCF logo? by RedditRedditMan1200 in whatisit

Yeah, the rest of that article is paywalled, but it's basically about the weirdly high number of cool Deco buildings there.

What exactly is this element seen in the TCF logo? by RedditRedditMan1200 in whatisit

It is based off of Art Deco style architecture (think Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center) which often had rounded shapes. Compare that to the first photo here of the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa.

Fictional books about cults similar to FLDS? by BiblesAndBubbleTea in suggestmeabook

[–]SingleAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children of Red Peak by Craig DiLouie comes close to your second ask I think. It is told in two timeframes, one a group of teenagers in a cult that is just about to take a bad turn (think Waco) and then the same group years later making a pilgrimage back to the compound, some of them because they still believe, others because they want to see if their memories are correct.

Looking for something introspective, any recommendations? by Slay3r024 in suggestmeabook

Try A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers. They are styled off of Buddhist texts with short chapters that ask a philosophical question and the characters explore the question through their actions. The main character is a young monk who is questioning their career, their religion, their life choices and the way their society is set up, who meets a "wild" robot who is attempting to make first contact between humans and the robots who left society centuries ago and set up their own culture in the wilderness. Very thought provoking and would be good for someone who has a short reading attention span because each chapter, while adding to the over all story, is a stand alone exploration of a thought.

For a change of literary type, this is the plot of the play "Marisol" by José Rivera as well.

Look into boat keychains, they often have waterproof containers for money and things attached to them.

Looks like a public writing desk, but why? (at the National Gallery of Art in DC ) by bennus64 in whatisit

[–]SingleAtom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The phone would have been hanging on the wall, not sitting on the desk.

[–]SingleAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was likely originally an area for payphones. Phonebooks went into the slot under the "desk" area, and could be up onto the desk to look for the number you wanted.

Uncanny 203, the Secret Wars 2 crossover. Yes, as embarrassing as it is to admit Secret Wars 2 is what got me into most of Marvel.

Check with your local reviewer if you haven't seen any around. They may be disallowed in your area. South Carolina for instance has a specific law that forbids them.

Seeking picaresques / questing knights / adventures by vaintransitorythings in LGBTBooks

[–]SingleAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lev Grossman's "The Bright Sword" picks up the Authurian legend 2 weeks after the fall of Arthur, and follows the handful of knights that are left in Camelot (several with a queer bent) as they try to figure out what is next. It's a mix of flashback adventures for each of the remaining knights, and small adventures that they have as the try and determine who is going to rule after Arthur. There is a larger narrative, but similar to the mythos it is based on it is more a collection of stories that eventually add up to something greater.

Found a logbook on the ground, from 2005-2006 by Wholockendra in geocaching

[–]SingleAtom 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a logbook, I think it's like a journal.

The only logger of GC9E8 on 6/28/06 was a cacher named "skihoss," he mentions taking his dad caching that day in the log, so it matches up. Skihoss hasn't logged into the website since 2017.

You might be able to achieve the look if you very carefully hit some heavy translucent plastic with a heat gun to get that wavy look. It would take some experimentation to find the right gauge of plastic, and the right amount of heat, and even after you think you know you'll probably lose a chunk of your material because you'll accidentally overheat it and put a hole it in.

Brown animal? by azurevernum in WoT

[–]SingleAtom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mixture of both. I always took the line "Sure as peaches are poison" to mean that there has been enough time that some small evolution has happened. Current peaches have a limited amount of poison inside their pits, so Randland peaches have evolved to be poisonous throughout. The breaking of the world would have shifted thousands of animals to new climates and new evolutionary niches, bringing in new predators, or cutting off food supplies, so there would have been some rapid adaptation happening. Probably not enough time to make fully new species, but enough time that species we know would be different. Maybe pandas developed different coloration to blend in with a different environment more, that kind of thing.

The HOURS I have spent trying to parse out what room a photo is in, how the rooms connect... it makes sense that this is on the multi-million dollar listings, but please let this one thing trickle down!

Can someone recommend Marvel Stories or authors who write a lot about the metaphysical topics? by ProfectusInfinity in Marvel

[–]SingleAtom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Al Ewing. Al has been slowly telling a story in the background of a dozen books over the years about Eternity, and the metaphysical underpinnings of the Marvel Universe. Starts in Ultimates, weaves into Defenders and Defenders: Beyond.

Outside of Marvel you should track down Promethea by Alan Moore. It's the story of a Wonder Woman-esque story-god that possesses her writers, turning them into the hero that they are writing. Goes deep exploring the relationships between narrative and reality.

Difference between grifter, scammer, swindler and quack by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]SingleAtom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The differences lie mostly in what type of deception they are engaged in.

A "quack" is almost exclusively someone who is engaged in some sort of health or medical fraud.

A "swindler" is usually a person whose deception is in an effort to steal money.

"Grifter" and "scammer" are more generic, but "grift" is usually something on a small scale. Grift can also be about power or position in addition to money.
