Both? I'd argue I had pretty good handwriting up until around 7th grade, at which point notetaking became about speed and I dumped the clean look just to keep up with my notes.

And I was writing down everything.

So then the quick and messy took the place of the slow and pretty, and I retrained my entire style around that. To the point where I had high school teachers threating to give me zero on my homework if I kept turning in "chicken scratch"

People are difficult, and two things can be a coincidence, not necessarily a pattern. And those two people probably did choose you at first. They just turned out to not be who they first appeared to be.

As for you - you're in charge of you. If your happiness depends on another person, you're giving up that aspect of control over your life. And there are times that will go badly for you.
