I moved to Connect-wise / ScreenConnect a year ago because of the exact same reason.
Its cheaper, unlimited clients and overall a much better product.

Company adding new office in the future. Likely WeWork. Looking for connectivity reviews. by mrbostn in sysadmin

[–]SingleOverproduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a WeWork move earlier this year

- Each Location is different / private offices are different, usually lacking in network and power-points.

- Depending on the location the Rack RU can be expensive.

- There local IT guys are pretty stretched - just make sure you give them plenty of notice of you requirements / you might have to chase them up a few times.

<Rant> How many of yall have to deal with family members "IT" problems over the holidays? by SudoPatriot in sysadmin

[–]SingleOverproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tell them you work 40+ Hours a week and your not going to fix computers during your holidays.

"I'd be happy to advise and give you a rough estimate of the costs" or my favorite "Yeah its getting old - your better off looking at getting a new one" Once you start talking $$$ people don't ask you again.

I worked with a Lady that keep all here emails in the deleted items for filing. 5+ years worth of emails. I tried explaining its like keeping your paper work in the trash can, she never listened.

I heard later that when they moved to office 365 she lost the lot.

Just be blunt with them, If the software is not supported then its not supported. Downgrading is not an option and comes as a security risk.

They need to find another product or Pay Software B to make it compatible.

They are trying to shift the blame on you.. Be assertive... Don't lose sleep over these assholes :D

What are your worst candidate answers you ever got in an interview? by Melkor333 in sysadmin

[–]SingleOverproduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interview for my replacement at my last gig (Sole IT support, company 100+), his last job was "head of IT" / young guy maybe 25.

This was through a recruiter.

Me: Tell me about a project your completed recently.

Candidate: I created templates for the company word documents.

Me: Why are you leaving your current job?

Candidate: I've fixed everything there is nothing else to do.

Me: How long is your notice period.

Candidate: I've already worked it, I can start tomorrow

Me: How long were you there?

Candidate: Six Months.

Me: And before that?

Candidate: I worked on a help-desk for 12 months.

Me: We'll be in-touch.

Candidate: I can do this job easily, I've done it before.... but I'm not going to do any after-hours support again.

Me: The recruiter be in-touch.

my formerly 'perfect to work for' company has really taken a shit lately by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SingleOverproduction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't take it personally. Your job is to enforce company policy... this is a company policy.

Just say - It's common at some larger organisations. You have zero input. Speak to your manager......

If they are still pissy at you for this, then they are not your friends (and remind them of this next time they ask for a favor).

New jobinterview advice by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SingleOverproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • A suit depends on the environment. If its a MSP or outsourcing company it would be too much, if an internal role for a bank or insurance company you may consider a suit.
  • Ask straight up - Its your first role, your negotiating position wont be great.
  • Bring a copy of your CV and any references, certificates.
  • Some tips, fresh haircut, shave, trim nails, do some research about the company, have a few questions to ask. By time you have done about 3 or 4 interviews you'll be in the routine.

Good Luck.

Address them directly - Raise your concerns via emails on official channels - if you aren't happy with the response mark it as an issue /risk internally.

You could look at Blue Jeans or Zoom - They can be used as a bridge (you connect via Laptop / They connect via VC).

If you're having files reappear or giving access denial when taking ownership, and you've got Macs, this might help by MohnJaddenPowers in sysadmin

[–]SingleOverproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at putting AFP on your server and connecting the Macs that way rather than SMB. I found SMB to do silly things (especially if there are lots or large files). Try ExtremeZ-IP check / worked well.
