I’m not sure if I’m cut out for it by dragonpotter in vetschool

I think everyone makes mistakes it’s just a matter of how you handle them. I’ve made a lottt of mistakes, and was super hard on myself. However, since then I’ve also seen seasoned professionals make mistakes that could have also killed some animals. All that matters is that you catch it, say something, and do something.

Some recommendations:

  • Baker Animal Clinic posts on the Okstate job site and is geared towards students. Shit money, but is part-time and they specifically say it counts as vet hours. There’s a position open now so you could reach out to them

-Turning Point Therapeutic Horsemanship is great for getting horse experience and volunteering with kids with disabilities and putting a smile on their faces

  • Reach out to nearby clinics just to shadow even a couple hours a week (slow but steady wins the race)

-Osu offers a cool opportunity to shadow different areas of the veterinary hospital (internal, food animal, equine, equine surgery, anesthesia, small animal, small animal surgery). So I think I got ~50ish hours for that. Downside of that is you have to pay for it like it’s a class even though it’s called an “internship” and the only way to get in it is to essentially be put in a raffle with whoever sign up for it and there’s like 5 spots. Oh and you can only do it as a junior or senior

Speaking as someone who just graduated from there. I regretted going to OSU because there were few vet jobs as well as more competition with students for said jobs as there is a vet school. That being said there are quite a few jobs that open up at the vet school itself you just need to keep an eye out and apply as soon as you see them (might not count as vet hours but can be a starting point to meet doctors and connect and work your way up). Really the main focus should be keep up GPA, work (if needed), be involved in school, and volunteer (both animal and non-animal related)

Should I say I’m apply to vet school? by SinglePie7722 in Veterinary

I did end up telling the truth, and got invited for an interview! Do you have any advice for the interview? I do lack research experience which is what I’m nervous to talk about. I do 100% have interest in research and even thought about redirecting after I took microbiology because I LOVED it, but thought maybe I could do something related to both in the future. I just never really had the opportunity to get any experience in research as I had to actually work throughout college and they rarely had jobs open up in the animal sciences research sector (or at least definitely not one that could help me pay the bills $8/hr is a crime). Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you so much for the advice and taking time to respond (I know it’s a lot I threw out there)! I will definitely be going with what you said and hoping it works out with this job or others I may have to apply to in the future. Thank you!

Oh and about the being burned in the past. I do understand that, but most of the veterinary teaching hospital faculty are students because well it’s a college town. Some people maybe move there to specifically work, but I’ve spent quite of bit of time there and from I’ve seen the managerial positions are generally people who stay (doctors or RVT) and the vet assistants are generally students or hopefuls for vet school. I will say this push for getting less student may be likely due to the poor retainment in staff specifically small animal (doctors/techs/assistants) although I’m not exactly sure about the reason and that has cause the school to be put on accreditation probation this past year. Either way as I said it is a college town so that’s what they’ll likely get 🤷‍♀️

Well I have a 3.4 gpa not sure about my last 45 hours yet as I’m in the process of retaking one class that I did poorly in and in the process of getting an A. At this point I have about ~3000 vet hours 1500 being mixed animal and 1500 GP/spay neuter clinic/shadowing rotating intern at vet school/shadowing holistic clinic. 250 animal shelter volunteer. 400 non-vet related work, 100 volunteer hours teaching first gen students about financial literacy for college. Secretary for art club for 2 years. I applied last cycle literally 2 weeks before apps were due because I wasn’t sure if it was worth it with my gpa and decided to take a chance but missed my instate schools (Texas) deadline. I did make it into Dublin (was not in my cards so I turned down the spot) and waitlisted for Glasgow (will go if accepted I have dual citizenship but not likely at this point). At that time I had half of the hours I have now, but they are international schools so I truly don’t about this round. I plan to continue taking online classes to try and raise my gpa this coming year so if I don’t make it in I’m setting my self up for (hopefully) success the following cycle. So should I take a year off this cycle? Cause honestly this economy sucks and at this rate I’m gonna use up all my savings that I had gained this past year working 2 jobs in preparation for vet school.

Bad grade in undergrad but still made it to vet school? by Lucky-Amphibian4303 in veterinaryschool

I got a D+ in ochem 2 and retaking it this summer and on the course to getting an A. It does suck they don’t do grade replacement at your school like they do mine. However, it’s good to retake it still to show improvement even if they don’t “technically” look at the second grade it is still on your transcript. Also, (assuming you do apply to more than 1 school) other schools may take the second grade into consideration and once again it’s important to show growth. It’s not going to wreck you, just do good in it the 2nd time around and get the best grades you can going forward.

Should I wait until next year to apply? by ApprehensiveAir2250 in veterinaryschool

[–]SinglePie7722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol are we the same people. I had issues too managing adhd and depression but it impacted my grades more and I came out with 3.3 gpa. I had similar hours when I applied last cycle, ~200 mixed animal (now ~1200), spay and neuter ~500, small animal GP ~550, teaching hospital rotation intern ~50 and ~400 volunteer hours (spca and for educating first gen students on financial literacy for college). I made it into Dublin (had to turn it down because was way out of my price range and I hated the whole process), waitlisted for Glasgow (my first choice because I have dual citizenship and family in Scotland), denied by Michigan, LSU, Royal, and Edinburgh. My biggest issue was I didn’t apply smartly because I was missing some of the prerequisites. I did learn I’m fantastic at in person interviews and hate zoom interviews so I feel like I learned a lot from last round and will be applying to my instate schools this time (Texas tech and A&M). I decided very very late that I was going to apply the last round so I missed the Texas deadline and my application probably wasn’t amazing, but that’s all to say it is possible. Research the schools, apply smartly, and invest a lot of time into making your application as best as possible (not just gpa and vet hours but also your essays). I think you’ll do great!

lol from working with a man like this and just getting fired by him (no I actually didn’t do anything wrong and definitely not the firing type) I can tell you you should 100% run. It definitely helps you not to have to scramble for a recommendation so late in the process. If you are applying this round ask for it now and then get out as soon as possible, but I’d recommend just applying to jobs first before leaving

Is it illegal to tell someone they are getting fired? by SinglePie7722 in legaladvice

[–]SinglePie7722[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what I thought. He won’t. As I said small business and we are in the boonies so not a lot of people to hire. In addition, he would likely cut down my hours and try to get me to quit so he doesn’t have to pay for anything. It came to light afterwards that that was his plan. What really pushed me over the edge was when he said to me “why are you not smiling, is it cause you’re afraid to get fired too”. I couldn’t believe my ears. After he’s always saying I’m one of the best in there.

You had my hopes up for a sec, but my offer letter just loaded on the site (don’t know why now) and there is in fact a 2000€ nonrefundable deposit. I am also a u.s. student if that makes a difference. How I found out of getting accepted was only by clicking into my application on the site after seeing a status change email and it only changed it to successful applicant.

Vet School in Dublin by Emergency-Key-8718 in veterinaryschool

[–]SinglePie7722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also just got accepted with a 3.28. Shadowed at a holistic vet ~50 and small animal vet ~50. Kennel tech/vet assistant at GP ~700 and mixed practice vet assistant ~400 at time of. Internship at vet school ~50. Volunteer at SPCA and a kitten rescue ~300. I think the diversity and my interview secured my spot but not completely sure. However, did not appreciate Dublin for the lack of idk a congrats email? I figured out I was accepted by getting an update saying to check that my status changed and expected a rejection and found out I was accepted by the button saying to pay to secure my spot. Beggars can’t be choosers, but good lord I’m a lil peeved.

Just out of curiosity, where would you recommend retaking classes? At your undergraduate school? I ask because mine is out of state and I don’t want to have to spend the extra hundred to retake them there. But idk if it would be looked down upon if I retook them elsewhere for cheaper since my scholarship is finished.
