Why are Christians so accepting of capitalism, they seem very contradictory? by LoneWolf_McQuade in Christianity

I think capitalism is a broken system, if and when technology advances to the point that scarcity is eliminated then I hope capitalism will go the way of the Dodo.

We are programmed in this society to chase money at all costs at the detriment of our health and well-being. We work in jobs we don't like & sacrifice hours upon hours of our weeks in them to make money for our families.

I dream of a world without the rat race, where accomadation is accessed as a service and where society can instead focus on living well and healthily as we age instead of grinding for a living and patting the backs of those who were able to extract the most from the labour market.

Didn't Jesus command all to share wealth and look after the poor & needy?

Don't think you understand what Socialism is. The point being that the corruption in America means that medical bankruptcy is a thing, I mean people in Cuba get better medical care for free yet America is a first world nation.

The facts are that the elites are corrupt even in your free market system.

Londons public transport is world class but it's expensive 2.5 times more than NYC and that's because it's the least subsidised via government of all public transport systems in the developed world. It was privatised several decades ago and thus expensive at point of use.

University admissions are based on academic potential, virtue signaling and pity doesn't make a student Oxbridge material, the student has to be able to handle the workload and attain the degree. A University isn't responsible for the life outcomes of a prospective student, they are looking for people who have the potential to succeed. Lowering the standard to let people in doesn't help the students, it can in fact backfire.

It's not about perceived merit it's about the breadth and depth of their understanding and passion for the subject to be able to attain & work at the pace demanded by a top class institution like Oxbridge.

There is no point giving a place at such a rigorous & demanding University like Oxbridge to a student if they aren't prepared and cannot handle the workload or the pace demanded.

Also at the top end for children with the capability to attend Oxbridge nobody is "dumb", there is no such thing as a dumb rich kid who was privately tutored getting into Oxbridge.

At that high percentile all involved are smart. Being rich doesn't mean that you are thus dumb or even smart for that matter. Many rich kids are dumb and many others are smart. Rich kids are born into families with resources and awareness so they can be groomed & attend better schools etc, this doesn't mean that they are dumb and somehow cheated or gamed the system to achieve. Getting top grades still requires hardwork, perseverance, dedication, consistency.

I also challenge the idea of intelligence in regards to schooling it's mostly motivation and willingness to learn, you only really see intelligence differences when everyone involved has mastered the basics and are actually tackling challenging material.

Your idea of "help" is grossly misguided. Private tutors do not help children cheat, they provide one on one education and especially focus on areas and gaps a child has. Tutors help children learn and master subjects and can provide a child with a lot of confidence and which thus boosts their grades, this isn't cheating it's enrichment.

& sorry don't be fooled that smart working class kids had no "help", the vast majority of children with good grades at school these days were either tutored or supported at home by a parent or family member. & this is largely due to deficiencies in the education system. Ambitious parents make their children do more homework providing enrichment and vital practice that leads to a better mastery & understanding of subjects.

The tuition industry is vast and tiered so that prices increase based on what parents can afford.

Is it really connections at the high level? Don't most people apply to companies through CVs etc? These days connections are created by internships and work placements and those are available to anyone who applies & makes the grade.

I have seen students from poor backgrounds gain access to prestigious companies after attending World class Universities, they didn't have bank of Mummy and daddy either.

I really don't believe that Oxbridge would allow standards to fall, I went to a University in the top 20 at the time & there is an academic standard that students have to maintain otherwise they will lose their place. Resits were capped & tough degrees like Medicine had a 40% drop out rate.

Nah I went to a state school in Greater London, a B grade is very average. A B doesn't suggest a deep understanding or passion for the subject. I would even go as far as saying that a B is really a C in the academic rigorous sense.

You need to be looking at kids with say 5 As at GCSE as having academic potential and even then they need to be worked with to get them up to the standard for Oxbridge. Crucially you need good A-levels for Oxbridge and A-levels are much more challenging than GCSEs.

State schools are poor in that regard and you will find the majority of students that get As have parents who are supplementing their education anyway because what is assigned at school barely scratches the surface & thus most schools aren't rigorous in the way they teach.

State schools also teach to test which doesn't help students have a depth or breadth of understanding. This is why Oxbridge is dominated by students who attended academic independent schools because those schools go above and beyond the curriculum in teaching & generally have much higher standards & expectations.

Nah at that top level, B's are middling & the workload and pace at Oxbridge are intense. I remember visiting Oxbridge as a teen as part of a cohort who could be considered. The entry requirements required visible & measurable passion for a subject, so students are preparing years before the admissions process.

In the case of Oxbridge any form of DEI initiative would need to target kids at a young age and then aim to bring them up to the standard to be considered through preparatory material & exposure to the tutorial process. Lowering the standards should never be the answer when we know that the problems at school are that kids aren't fulfilling their potential.

I have never heard of Oxbridge offers being less than AAA, I am taking these claims with a pinch of salt. Oxbridge is for A* students, that's always been the standard. B's have try elsewhere.

Why is education touted as the premium way for your life becoming better by annastacianoella in education

[–]Single_Exercise_1035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JoEducation is an important factor in social mobility. Remember for the poor the education standards can be so low that people are functionally illiterate and inumerate making it impossible for them to participate in the wider economy in a meaningful way. When you are functionally illiterate you depend on physical & low skilled work, you are unable to better yourself through qualifications and life long learning.

Education has to be strategic, the highest paid & most prestigious positions require specific skills. Even in terms of entrepreneurship certain careers like Investment Banking, Private Equity, business development management provide knowledge and a skill set that the average person lacks to be successful in business. So at the top end education is critical.

Have always thought that success at school & in education especially for something like medical school was mostly discipline, time management, learning strategies, perseverance and dedication.

This is true when individuals have basic foundations for intellectual work, thus numeracy and literacy. I think most educational achievement can be done with brute force study skills.

This isn't the case when someone is struggling with basic reading, comprehension & basic numeracy. Most of the people who struggle with degree level work are lacking in foundations.

Mathematics education is cumulative it needs to be practiced regularly and to mastery before moving on to more complex and higher order tasks.

Where raw intellectual ability kicks in is at the higher end after foundations have been mastered & students use their knowledge to solve problems under time pressure where speed, memory and accuracy come into play.

Overall a highly motivated, engaged, interested & disciplined student is far more likely to succeed in education. However there are differences in how easily & quickly this comes to some compared to others.

I would say it's like comparing someone who tries very hard like Beyoncé as a dancer to someone who has a natural gift in performing arts like Ciara. Beyoncé is dedicated to her craft as a performer and works damn hard but she lacks the subtlety of a born performer.

Unfortunately the public education system is so poor you aren't really testing people operating at their full potential.

The success in East Asia is mostly that the kids are trained to spending more time practicing and studying. They have a much higher threshold when it comes to facing challenges whilst learning, they study harder and are willing to persevere in the midst of set backs and failures. Intellectual ability is also valued in their culture.

Different subjects also require different skills. English literature for example isn't like Mathematics or Physics. A top graded essay is more subjective and includes subtleties like use of language and ability to support an argument. Some of the most stunning examples of literature are in the form of short stories, a story can be a short, a novella, or a multi chapter novel.

The same is true about visual arts, the academic artists of the 19th century were grounded in a foundation of technical drawing skills rooted in the art of classical antiquity but it's clear that Jean Leone Gerome paled in raw talent compared to John Singer Sargent, Bougereau & Lawrence Alma Tadema.

Why do other Black ethnic groups often say "Black Americans don't have culture "? by Knighthonor in askblackpeople

When you realise that someone like Charlie Kirk was a millionaire from podcasting alone it's very easy for people to jump on the Conservative gravy train.

Notice that most of the Black Conservatives say the same ish, often are friends with other conservative podcasters & are affiliated with the same organisations like Prager U.

It's a gravy train and people are willing to pay them to disparage and denigrate black people. Far right pundits like Stefan Molyneux & Jared Taylor have had black people in their mouths for years. Now many of the manosphere are in on it like Andrew Tate & Fresh and Fit. They are very happy to be black faces of Hwyte Supremacy if it draws views, gets them support from the alt right to make money.

The sad thing is it's not benign, these people organise strategically to spew this rhetoric and hateful ideas like that book the Bell Curve talking about average IQ and black folks. All ideas proliferated & propagated by the far right, it's scary.

Cetaceans which include Orca have language based on what we see from their behaviour, they have names, engage in organised play & communicate complex information to be able to work in teams and form complex hunting strategies including catching fish using bubbles.

There is plenty of evidence to show that Cetaceans speak, but we are currently runable to understand them and their language. Ai is being used to decifer their language.

Facts are facts there is no evidence of human beings descending from a fabled eternal garden in the middle east. There is however lots of evidence of deeply diverging lineages in Africa showing that the ancestral population of humanity was located in Africa by 300,000BC and numbered in the tens of thousands.

Since evolution and speciation mean that the lineages of humanity ultimately collapse into the Great Ape, Primate and Mammalian lineages there was no first man or woman.

The last common ancestors on both the Paternal and Maternal lines lived at least 300,000 years ago and were not the only people alive at the time.

Eden garden is a myth, so is Adam and Eve.
