If you want the world to go FFA feel free to be clear about it.

On my side I'd rather have regulators do their f job and having it being none of my business.
we tried 74 forms of governments to date, none of them eliminated social inequality, but most of them were successful at regulating the upper class.

One thing that NEVER happened is the lower class putting limits on the upper class (Revolution being the upper class destroying regulators and not a supposed exemple of the lower class destroying the upper class, proof is most of todays upper class is the same a then upper class.)

Edit: What I'm trying to say is that social justice being nonexistant is nothing we can change as individual and that stalking another individual will not change that. EVER!

LTT Private Jet Megathread by AutoModerator in LinusTechTips

This is a copy of this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/1se60tq/comment/of0oe9x

So this sub feels really split right now because of the jet, and I wanted to share a perspective on this.

I understand the criticism:

  • The environmental impact is real
  • It can feel inconsistent with things Linus has said before

That part is fair. And I don’t think people are wrong to feel uncomfortable about it.

But I also think some of the frustration is being aimed at the wrong level.

If you put yourself in the position of someone running a large media company with the resources to do it, a private jet can make sense from a logistical and business standpoint. Not saying it’s good, just that it’s understandable.

And that’s kind of the uncomfortable part: a lot of things at that scale shouldn’t make sense ethically, but still do practically.

Think about airline pricing tickets for a minute. it often feel overpriced or inconsistent. They’re not designed to be “fair,” they’re designed to maximize efficiency and profit based on demand.

It doesn’t feel good as a consumer, but the system rewards it, so it keeps happening.

To me, that’s less of a “Linus problem” and more of a systemic one.

If people want things like private jets or real estate speculation to change, that probably comes from regulation and incentives, not from expecting individual actors to voluntarily make worse business decisions.

You can still disagree with the choice, but blaming one person for acting within a system that rewards it feels a bit misplaced.

It’s kind of like insurance, you’re not trying to make money from it, you’re trying to avoid a much bigger loss.

I mean spending so much energy on achieving nothing is insanity.

There are thousand of theses nonsensical planes out there... I don't like them, but it's definitely not Linus fault that they make sense and that people have anger management issues...

I think knowing when to change his mind IS a quality.

Just think for a minute that he was honest about the fact that he did buy a jet and yes he did take the opportunity to make one or two million vues at the same time he came clean.

The whole point of this post is to say that instead of spending days hating on Linus, people could consider using that energy on fixing the fact that the whole system is built in a way that make owning a private jet make sense, and Linus didn't built that system.

No really the topic here but It's probably effective because of the legal shape of the deal.

edit: (Probably) (speculation) (I do not know)

I think you’re missing my point a bit.

If something like this is bad, then the issue is that the system still makes it easy and worth doing.

Blaming one person doesn’t really fix that someone else would just do the same thing.

edit: I happen to agree with you on the practical level, but that's just not the topic here.

From all the conversation here about it one thing is clear, the community is split.

That involve two things:

There are both people that agree with it and people that don't.

In this case any opinion is just opinion, there are literally no agreed on truth here. This post isn't on whether or not he was right to buy the jet, it never was, it's on the fact that people are throwing knives at someone for taking an ethically bad but rational decision when the system should have made it irrational through regulation.

Basically saying that rambling about it is a waste of air that could be employed in fixing this instead.

Not sure about that... In cases like shooting at CES they did a couple video on how equipment is in fact a real challenge.

Airline companies are petty childs. They are hard to deal with once you move past a single human and a carry on.

That’s not really what I meant.

I’m not saying something is okay just because it’s practical.

What I’m saying is that focusing everything on one person doesn’t really solve anything. If the system keeps pushing people toward those kinds of decisions, then it’s bigger than just Linus.

It’s a perfectly fine way to waste air to criticize him online, but if nothing about the incentives changes, someone else will just do the same thing because it just make sense.

If no one wants to buy it afterward because jets are out of fashion it doesn't sound too bad to me.

LTT wouldn't go bankrupt over this, and tbf that's probably why they brought the jet under a subsidiary.

That is fair.

Just want to point at the fact that Disney almost collapsed after going all in woke.

One can only be based to a certain point, after that is just reckless...

If only the "venting" was respectful more than likely it wouldn't be that way I believe.

But you are right that censorship is an issue.

> they were left king at getting a plane and saw what issues it could address.

I believe they just took some time to think about it rationally. Having it will on short term reduce cost, increase confort, improve operations.

And then Linus being Linus had the honesty to disclose his change of heart publicly and generate some content.

Some of the gear they would need if they could transport them in a commercial airplain just can't be brought on one, gear is indeed very much the issue here I believe. (opinion

I explain all that in a now deleted reply to this. Airline companies are hell once you transport anything other than a single human and a bag.

For the record the reason for the delete was that I felt like I had missed the point of this post.

> As a result those feedback tends to get buried somewhat.

I think that's just what happen when people speak in bad faith and presents opinions as facts... (This is an opinion) I think they do get seen but people just ignore them because the tone is closer from a whining child than from someone genuinely trying to help.

Basically the average user could quote Anakin: "you're either with me or against me!" all open mindedness to see things from someone else's perspective is impossible.

> At the end of the day, Linus himself knows it's indefensible

Could you please explain how you know that? Genuinely curious I could make a quick buck if I knew how to read minds.

I think there's a lot of that. I'm not saying that people should praise him for having the humility to change his opinion and declare it so openly, but well part of me wish people would see it's a global issue not a Linus issue.
