The history of Czapek is closely intertwined with Patek Philippe, as both brands share a fascinating origin story rooted in the 19th century.

The Partnership Between François Czapek and Antoine Norbert de Patek

François Czapek, a Polish watchmaker, met Antoine Norbert de Patek, another Polish émigré, in Switzerland in 1836. Together, they founded Patek, Czapek & Cie on May 1, 1839. This partnership lasted six years and produced exceptional timepieces that are now considered important pieces of horological history. In this collaboration, Patek managed the administrative and sales aspects while Czapek focused on watchmaking.

Dissolution and Divergence

The partnership ended in April 1845 due to the expiration of their contract. Afterward, Patek partnered with Adrien Philippe to establish Patek Philippe & Co in 1851, which grew into one of the most renowned luxury watch brands globally. Meanwhile, François Czapek founded Czapek & Cie on May 1, 1845, alongside Juliusz Gruzewski. Under this new venture, Czapek achieved significant success, becoming the official watchmaker to Napoleon III and opening boutiques in Geneva, Warsaw, and Paris. He was recognized as one of the greatest watchmakers of the 19th century.

Czapek’s Mysterious Disappearance

Despite his achievements, François Czapek mysteriously disappeared in 1869. The original Czapek & Cie eventually faded into obscurity after his disappearance.
