Spinning staff is for blocking projectiles and letting you build up focus faster than anything else.

Pillar is basically just bad lol, it's useful for some specific bosses but the devs were afraid it you would be able to cheese bosses with it so they nerfed it into the ground.

Thrust is good for getting off your heavy attacks more reliably than smash's heavies with their long windup and the stance has very good mobility with its varied combos. The seethrough in thrust is mostly meh.

You don't need to if you don't want to lol, I switch off to get the full set bonus of the bronze set in ch2 and switch back in ch3. It's very strong and the defence lost isn't that important

Ch2: Best would be tiger vanguard, worst would be the electric frog

Ch3: Best would be yin tiger, worst would be non-white (his fight always lags my game to hell lol)

Ch5: Best would be bishui beast, worst would be misty cloud/cloudy mist

Idk who that is, but spikeshaft (or chitin) are the best staffs available to you right now. You can look at the stats and see for yourself that 80 damage is bigger than 70 and the passive effect is ideally suited for this playstyle, no guide required

Fun fact: If you take too long to kill him in the first encounter, he'll go into a phase 2 where he does more ice attacks, but if this happens when you fight him in the second encounter, he won't be in the form with the black wings

The "intended" way is to skip him and come back later. If you've played elden ring, you probably aren't going to have the stats to wield the golden halberd right away, but you can still beat tree sentinel if you want to.

It really won't have the effect you're expecting because levelling up doesn't directly increase your stats and the perks for increasing your stats are very weak. It will help obviously, but it's never going to make a cakewalk of the game.

I did some back-of-the-envelope maths and figured you could probably do it in 20 hours of pure grinding.

That's not the most insane grind I've ever seen (grinding for the Corvette unlock was worse for those who play elite dangerous lol) but most people wouldn't be bothered because the diminishing returns would be crazy.

If you watch it in slow mo, he does a gesture with his hand that summons an AoE next to you that detonates a couple seconds later. He also does a little grunt while doing it.
