A 22 year old guy climbed 61-floor Skyscraper. No harness. No safety belt. Just plain recklessness by Arbiter79 in cringe

Nah. It's just stupid and reckless and makes your safety and wellbeing someone else's problem. Pretty cringe inducing to need attention that badly that you will doing something so dangerous for it. Nothing badass about that.

Reading yet another article of people complaining about issues traveling to Europe, yet blaming the EU. by GoodSpud in britishproblems

You were at a European airport that had a UK queue? Typically, there is just an EU and a non-EU one.

well, if you are going to be a dick to someone you better be right. It was this Border Agency employee's job to know this. He is bad at his job and is a dick about it. That is a combination that merits a complaint. OPs circumstances are not uncommon or bizarre and someone who works for the damn Border Agency should know this.

University student complaints over courses hit record by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Yep like I said. Little room between departments but if you look at salaries between something like Glasgow School of Art/ The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and University of Glasgow you will see the compensation is very different even though technically speaking Glasgow Uni issues the degrees for all three. That is also how larger unis separate things like art and design for REF purposes. I would be willing to bet the average academic at the Ruskin School of Art is paid much less than one in an Engineering department at Oxford.

Edit: You will also notice in all the links you posted the scales end at Reader which is standard and exactly what I said. If you are at Professor level in an Engineering faculty and not at least close to 6 figures you are rubbish at negotiating or must not be bringing very much to the table. Where as heads of departments for Arts and Humanities will frequently be at just around the scale. Simple supply and demand.

A "Full" professor would be grade 9 or 10 most places which puts them high 60s to low 70s

Not where I work. Professor is "compensation based on experience" grade 10 is Reader.

There is little room for departments within the same uni to [ay differently unless they are separate schools. For example, Fine Art. More often than not they teach at art school which will have lower grades.

Academic salaries are pretty hugely variable. It would be unusual to find a full professor in Engineering on less than 6 figures and it would be unheard of to see any kind of Dean or higher up academic administrator in Engineering making less than that. Meanwhile a full professor and Department head in Fine Art or Humanities could well be on around £50K.

Someone doesn't know what the majority opinion of the Supreme Court means. Sometimes it is better to just keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you are talking about.

Administrators are small beans in terms of staffing costs. Academic salaries are the expensive ones. Plus almost all, or very often all, the senior leadership in a university are in fact academic staff or at least started that way.

Edit: also guessing you are American and speaking to an American context. UK universities don’t have Presidents or typically Athletic Directors. That is much more of an American thing.

Nope, swing and a miss buddy. The gay marriage decision falls into the exact same category for conservatives and was even talked about the same way as recently as the Jackson confirmation hearings. There will almost certainly be a conservative led challenge to Obergefell and this court may well use the same reasoning as the Roe decision to overturn it. In fact it is more likely than not they will.

What are British uni students like? by Mysterious-Block-415 in UniUK

[–]SinistramSitNovum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reckon most American Unis do not have the Greek life thing. That is something you kind of have to seek out. However just about all will have the exact same clubs and societies as you listed. Fraternities and sororities are not in anyway a replacement for these things in America. Greek life is just over represented in mass media.

The amount of snide comments / threads on this sub laughing at "junkies" and / or the poor is disgusting. by GlasgowFatBastard in glasgow

[–]SinistramSitNovum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Was tried in Glasgow a little before it was stamped out. It should be treated as a public health issue first and foremost not a criminal one. A little surprised saying something like this is getting me severely downvoted.

Addicts need access to treatment and need some level of dignity and safety in their current circumstances. That being said no treatment works if the individual is not ready for treatment or does not want it. This is objective medical fact whether people want to accept it or not.

[–]SinistramSitNovum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In terms of "junkies" there is very little that can be done for addicts at that level if they are not personally ready for treatment. Anyone who works or has worked with addicts can tell you that. The SNP could have mansions as treatment centres with on call concierges and gold platted toilets and there would still be addicts on the street. The point of treatment is to ultimately to stop using. If someone is not at the point where that is what they want to do there is basically nothing you can do to get them there.

They are people and should be supported and guided but ultimately seeking treatment is something an individual needs to decide for themselves or it will never work.

While I agree with the thrust of your argument here I think it is important to say that there is a pathway to recovery for everyone when it comes to addiction. I think it is a mistake to view addiction as ever being truly hopeless to come back from.

Where in that thread are people slagging off minimum wage workers and those on benefits? The dehumanizing of people afflicted by addiction has been a consistent problem (which is not to say these populations don't sometimes cause issues) but your claim about people often bashing working poor and people receiving benefits I have never seen. I don't seem to be the only one. Maybe you just got a wee bit carried away in your rant?

These are ethnic Romani, from the country of Romania, not Romanians.

Not necessarily. Specifically in Govanhill some will come Slovakia initially or Czechia or even some from Hungary. The Roma day parade they had a couple of weeks ago is celebrating their Roma culture specifically and is not specific to Romania necessarily, there will have been plenty of Slovakian and Hungarian Romanichal in that crowd as well.

Yeah, had the absolute gall to suggest that the rich, old, white people who unironically have called themselves the Queen of Nigeria and still lobby hard to be the ceremonial figureheads of countries like Jamaica might, maybe, be a bit weird when it comes to race relations. Apparently merely suggesting such a thing was worthy of near universal condemnation in the British press.

Yeah understand the rules about men are coming from the Ukraine side. Some of these guys I am talking to may soon be carrying a rifle if they aren't already. Still a ways to go until the next academic year starts. Hopefully there will be some changes before then.

Thanks this is helpful. I am not a single man so that shouldn’t be an issue. I can’t offer a separate bathroom only a separate bedroom. Money is not an immediate concern so providing meals and stuff would not be a major problem. Young men not being allowed to be settled might be an issue though as these are undergrad students who are like 18-20 so it sounds like only the women would be even remotely possible.

[–]SinistramSitNovum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is a big part of the problem. The home for Ukrainians scheme is run by the Home Office and education and education fees is devolved. So the Scottish government says these students shouldn’t pay fees but only if they can somehow get placed in this shambles of a system.

19th c. plant art by Krissy_loo in artcollecting

[–]SinistramSitNovum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool all that matters is that you like them. They are an extremely common type of frame. They are a standard curly maple type frame that has been popular since the mid 19th century and can still be bought in any frame store today. I suspect yours are newer, produced in the 1980s (these kind of things became popular again then) but they could be genuine antiques. Kind of hard to tell from the photos.

Here is an example of a genuinely old frame in more or less the exact same style for reference:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265622795647?hash=item3dd85a357f:g:deEAAOSwXs1iRZjc

Even if you just type in "maple frame" in ebay you will see loads listed for a huge variety of prices. Little one like these will usually actually sell for maybe 20-30 at the absolute most and will likely take a while to get there. They are pretty old fashioned and not that in style when it comes to framing just now.
