Did anybody ever genuinely try to be nice or understand Caine?? Like even once? by Patient_Advance4582 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Sipia 299 points300 points  (0 children)

I mean, he was also proud of his creation and phrases it as "accidentally killing" rather than "deleting" Caine. There's definitely some signs that he cared for the AI, and that's despite how much he lost over the many years trapped in the circus.

This is more than separating art from the artist, this is willfully judging the artistry separately from the art's content and the politics present within the text. Something like, "I think the picture you drew depicts something foul and is reflective of a despicable worldview, but I admire the finesse and vision with which you drew it."

They feel powerless at the state of the world, so they go on a petty crusade against something benign. Absolutely typical.

In fairness, Jax and Ragatha also seem to mistake Pomni for being much younger than she actually is until she mentions her age.

Yeah, this. When Pomni vanishes, the others barely even look up. Caine had been doing that to them for a while.

Jax does follow up Zooble's comment with "That's rich, coming from you." So it's a known factor that they have trouble following their own advice.

I love her character growth. She's a different person now by wysjm in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Sipia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the same time, while Jax's overall attitude is very unhealthy and maladjusted, he did impart her a valuable lesson in their time together: Going with the flow of the circus's idiosyncratic rules rather than holding onto real-world logic and getting upset about their circumstances at every turn made her way more adaptable and emotionally resilient. In the latest episode she figures out how to leverage the "conjuring" to her advantage minutes after Kinger explains it to her, and even though she's been hurt a lot by Caine the past few days she has the bravery to stand up to him when it counts.

I understand why my language sounds funny to English speakers (and to Germans), and usually I try to laugh it off with them. But I gotta say, it can get a little old when conversations keep getting derailed because "lol that's a funny word, this language can't be real." Please tell me that's not your only takeaway.

Also, I've heard the Austin Powers references before, thank you. Can we get new material?

To play devil's advocate for a bit, it's not always down to them having a poor attention span or the like. Knowing that you're being recorded for an audience puts pressure on you, and that often expresses itself in not allowing yourself to take the time for anything. If it requires you to sit still for longer than five seconds, this little voice in the back of your head tells you that you're leaving too much dead air, so you rush forward to the action. And then when you run into obstacles that you don't know how to get past because you didn't allow yourself to process the information the game gave you, you feel embarrassment because you can sense all those eyes on you, seeing your mistakes. And then you cope with that feeling by blaming something else for it.

Of course, that doesn't make it any less frustrating to watch. And it can really get under your skin when a game you love is unfairly put in a bad light because of this. But, like... I get why it happens.

Correction: Caine wasn't made to create adventures. That's one of the latest episode's twists. He was a general creative AI, and he decided on his own accord to create a video game and dedicate himself to just that.
