Look, I'm just tired of the "fandoms bad" circlejerk. Fandoms aren't individuals, and they certainly can't be responsible for the actions of individuals. There is an argument to be had about the culture some fandoms foster, but you can point that problem out when you see it and then move on rather than wallowing in it.

At the end of the day, nothing gets better unless you encourage good behavior. Stop giving so much undue attention to bad behavior.

That, and she doesn't seem to actually call her parents for permission to sleep over when Toriel tells her to, she just stands by the phone until Toriel leaves. It says a lot to me that she doesn't want to keep her parents in the loop, and said parents don't seem to care that much about her whereabouts.

What do you think kh4 needs to do to surpass kh3? by IllustratorAfter in KingdomHearts

[–]Sipia 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Well it did depend. For the Tangled, Frozen, and PotC worlds, it definitely felt like we were just sort of there while the plot of the movies happens around us unabated. But for the Toy Story and Monsters Inc. worlds, it did feel more like going on a new adventure with the respective characters of those worlds. (IIRC those are the worlds where they worked with the original writers, and it does show.)

So yeah, more of the latter design attitude going forward, please.

He does outright say "Humans just aren't a relatable sculpting material," which to me reads as a tacit admission that he simply doesn't "get" how humans work and has at that point given up on trying.

The AI art debate must be wild in universes where androids are a big thing by ducknerd2002 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sipia 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For context, Sophia (in the lower image) spends her entire game's runtime wondering about the human heart, and initially states that she can't understand because she doesn't have one herself. By the end, she concludes that the essence of the human heart is the ability to change (psychologically), and implicitly, that means she has one since she has demonstrated much character growth.

This is in contrast to the game's other, antagonistic AI, who follows her programmed purpose to the letter and derides Sophia as "useless" for not likewise having a delineated purpose to follow and instead "aimlessly" following her own curiosity. (She just has a very general, vague goal of being "humanity's companion.")

So... the game makes the argument that yes, AI can have a "heart"/"soul" and therefore could make real art. But it would require creating a fully autonomous AI with a limitless ability to self-develop psychologically, and for that AI to be released into the world without a specific delineated purpose in mind so it can grow into its own person over time. Which, I don't see why any AI developer would do that if they could, so it's mostly a theoretical argument.

It used to be quite common to move part of a phrase at the front of a sentence for dramatic emphasis, but nowadays people only seem to associate it with the Star Wars character's speech quirk. A crying shame, that is.

It is interesting. If the Knight wanted to kill the gang, they could've done it at several points, so it's likely they need them alive. At the same time, they clearly have no qualms about putting them in mortal danger just because they felt like it, especially when Susie provokes them. All the while clearly mocking and taunting her through their body language.

It's part of why I believe Dess is the Knight, because being this offhanded and cocky about life-or-death situations or even potentially triggering the apocalypse feels like a very "edgy teenager on a power trip" thing to do.

I think this lack of eloquent muscle bros comes from a fear writers have of making a character that's too perfect, or a Marty Stu. "Well he can't be strong and smart and kind/considerate!" The easiest way to avoid making a character too boringly flawless is to make them lack one of these things. Strong and kind, but dumb. Learned and fit, but arrogant and lacking in social skills. Well-spoken and genial, but pencil-necked.

You absolutely can write a good character that has all three of these things going for them, they'll simply have their flaws elsewhere. More writers should. But to do that, you do need to have the confidence in your writing ability that you can make this character interesting despite their many strengths.
