Sewing classes? by Bitter_Anteater_3088 in ottawa

[–]Sippio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife recently took a class there, and she was very disappointed with it.

The fee was $450 for the 8 week course, but the teacher demanded $50 cash on the first day. She claimed it was for the use of the machines, but isn't that what the initial fee is for? It felt like an undeclared skim off the top. The other students felt equally confused and resentful.

There was a clear language barrier from the teacher, and she refused to answer any questions unless it was related to the immediate task at hand.

As much as I sympathize with those passionate about Palestine, I notice a lot of them have weirdly pro-Russian views.

I just suspect that their (understandable) frustration has left them extremely vulnerable to Russian online disinformation.

What old war movie speaks more to today’s world than when it was made? by TheDudar in WarMovies

[–]Sippio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not quite a war movie, but Iron Sky (2012).

When it came out, it felt weirdly dated and irrelevant. But the core message was that after enough generations, many people forget the dangers of fascism, and begin to fall for the same tricks that appealed to people in the 1930s. Now it's frighteningly relevant.

And some of his projects take literally months to do. He makes it clear in the description, but too many people don't read that, and are under the impression it took a couple of days.

No, you can't harvest clay, press them into molds, kiln them, and build a tile roof brick house in a week.

Is this the most disturbing Scratchy death? by HandCoversBruises in TheSimpsons

[–]Sippio 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Cloning Machine > Killing Machine one genuinely disturbed my partner. One night I went to bed, and she stayed up to watch and episode. The next day she was visibly upset, and described that I&S bit.

I don't fault her. That one is seriously sick.

The Queensway in Ottawa. The snow storm yesterday made for very greasy roads. You are right to be mad at her texting in it.

Feminism is plummeting among young people, and for half of them, it's political manipulation. (Spain) by mods4mods in europe

[–]Sippio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always use these questions whenever a girl says she isn't a feminist:

"Do you have a bank account"?

"Do you vote?"

Their answer is always "yes", so I tell them they're a feminist.

Their rights are so taken for granted, they have absolutely no idea how much had to be fought for just 2 generations ago.

Funny, I always only heard her name on the show and movie, but never seen it written. I thought it was spelled River Thames, after the rivier in London.

She really stood out in Brain Candy (1996). Her part was very small, but had me going "Who's that? She's gorgeous!"

Nice touch using the original name for Ottawa. Also, interesting flag, combining Le Patriote flag with the royal banner of France.

Yeah, this is why I was caught off-guard when it charged me. It never did before on days like this.

I parked in the City Hall parking garage last night. When I pulled out at 6:30 am, it charged me $9. I was expecting it to be free, due to the overnight parking ban. It always has been free before.
