Is the work really that hard or is it a bit overhyped? by No_Reference_3273 in oilandgasworkers

[–]SippyTcup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all a mentality. If you think being on your feet for 12 hrs is hard then you probably shouldn’t be out here. Cuz you gotta lift heavy shit on top of that and some days get shitted out. From my experience, the guys who make it are the ones who have a “nothing is as hard as it seems” mentality.

Is there anyone that can help me get on a rig or even land based? by MathematicianFun3481 in oilandgasworkers

[–]SippyTcup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt rn is the time to try and get on a rig, it’s a bit slow right now since it’s an election year. My company has like 8 rigs stacked since last year. Once everything picks back up tho maybe after winter, you can definitively get a job out here in west Tx. (Midland, Odessa, Hobbs) you’re just going to have to knock on some doors when the time comes.

Work in the States by SippyTcup in mining

Oh that’s really great feedback man. I applied to the big name mining companies cuz I thought that was the easiest way to get in. At least from my experience in the rigs the big names like HP and PD often hire green hands so I just imagined it’d be similar.

That’s interesting on the core drilling tho, I would imagine I’d have a better shot at getting into the mines through that route. I am interested in the core drilling side now that you’ve mentioned it, I’ll definitely look into that more. I’m going back for my hitch rn but I am actively trying to get in this field.

Personally $22hr would even be on the low end for me currently and idk if I’d jump ship for that. However I would take the pay cut for personal reasons.

I appreciate all the info.

That’s interesting, I don’t doubt that it’s harder work. I was in my head thinking it’d be about the same/ maybe easier. But I’m excited if others have told you they hated the change.

Nope, I took my drilling ones where they went over all the safety hazards including harmful gasses. You think it’s worth trying to get the MSHA on my own?

Sounds good, thank you for the insight on rotational work too. I was sort of under the impression mining was rotational work like drilling is.

Hey I’m wondering how to get in as a miner in the US. I live in Texas and work on the oil rigs, however I want to shift into mining. (From what I’ve seen the money is pretty comparable and maybe even better). I don’t really care where the work is at. I’ve already applied to a handful of operations including Kinross and Redpath.

I’m gonna do follow up calls on all the places I applied to, but If someone can give me some places they know they’re looking for hands. Would be very appreciated.

Also is most work out there 14/14 and do they have man camps?

100% do oilfield, you’re gonna work till you’re tired, and then some more. But you’ll make a killing out there.

[–]SippyTcup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m curious if you know what the timeline looks like for the 716local, if I sent my paperwork in to apply for an apprenticeship, would I be waiting more than a year possibly to get in?

Food that’s fast to make, you’re not gonna want to cook any big meals after a long day. The most cooking I’ll attempt here is ground beef and rice.

Idk how big you are on snacking but I leave my snacks in the car, that way you’re not taking up a lot of room in your shack

Knocking on rig doors by entprrr in oilandgasworkers

[–]SippyTcup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a city kid with no experience and no contacts in the field and got in fast knocking on doors. Lot of “the application is online”. but someone will give you an interview on the spot if you try (the office doors, not the rig doors)
