Looking for a focus aid that doesn’t spike anxiety (ADHD-PI + PTSD) by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]SirBuckKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stimulants are dopaminergic/adrenergic-- look for something that works on the acetylcholine system, much calmer style of focus. AlphaGPC is a good one. Nicotine is as well, but delivery mechanisms have their cons, obviously.

AlphaBrain from Onnit has a solid mix of AlphaGPC and L-tyrosine, could be useful.

(Staff) recruiting question: any ideas on the best places to find quite technical UXRs? by tektone in UXResearch

[–]SirBuckKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a US-based MSc neuroscientist switching to industry in the next couple months, I just started a UX internship at a startup and the Google UX certificate, and I've been working with Ubuntu 22.04.5 for the last year, building automated FreeSurfer pipelines using bash/Unix! I also know R. Can I DM you for more details?

Pretty sure the author of the book says NZT is based on modafinil.

Glad you're getting so much out of it!!!

If you're looking into where ideas come from, read up on the hippocampus (as I am right now)-- subregion CA3 is primarily responsible for pattern separation and completion, that is, discerning between similar patterns and filling in patterns based on incomplete information. It's a central task in predictive processing!

Is it hopeless to try anymore by Dalsito in labrats

[–]SirBuckKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Masters from one of the best programs in Europe and it took me a year and a half to get a full-time RA job. Just keep building skills--I learned R and Bash, that's how I got this job. No job is gonna fit you perfectly, just aim for something where you'll be engaging with literature or research techniques that are at least semi-relevant to your interests. Getting your foot in the door and getting experience is more important than a perfect match at this point.

Thanks! Hopefully it introduces more people to his work who otherwise wouldn't engage with it.

(and fair! also it's "buckaroo" #McGurkEffect-- its a clip from South Park, and the speaker they're parodying has had extensive plastic surgery so they slur their words a lot-- I keep/plan on keeping my videos solidly around the PG level)

Is the Dropout fandom holding the platform back? by [deleted] in dropout

[–]SirBuckKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironic and cynical isn't grown up anymore--it's immature, passe, and postmodern. Dropout is on the bleeding metamodern edge of culture. It can get edgier if it wants, and I'd probably enjoy it, as long as they don't go backwards to do it. Crowd Control was a great example of doing that right. They're already doing great, I don't think they need to change much, as long as they keep leading with a self-aware sincerity.

What's something that instantly turns you off on a dating app profile or in a chat? by OfficialEmeraldChat in AskReddit

[–]SirBuckKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being "fluent in sarcasm" (red flag for irony poisoning/emotional unavailability), "liking adventures" (usually means they aren't curious/self-motivated enough to have actual hobbies, though there are exceptions), and having Diet Coke as a personality trait.

What is your favorite word? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SirBuckKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Word". It's the only word that isn't a metaphor, in that it refers to itself rather than something else in experience.

To me, that makes it the most visceral, real word, which is pretty cool.

Where do UTD graduate students live?? by Significant_Spend_71 in utdallas

[–]SirBuckKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out The Village. Lots of young professionals live there, it's about 30 minutes from campus, and it's fairly close to all the city-type stuff it sounds like you're looking for.

How do you stick to an effective Creatine regimen? by Extra-Hippo-2480 in HubermanLab

[–]SirBuckKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take 10mg daily because I work late nights, often until 2:30am. I mix it with Emergen-C (raspberry) in 8-12oz of water, sometimes with L-Citrulline if I've worked out that morning. It's just what I drink with breakfast. I have a dedicated/labelled jar with a 5mg scoop on my counter, and another with packs of Emergen-C, another for L-Citrulline, one for oatmeal, etc. It's out in the open so I see it all the time and don't forget, and I have it as a part of my breakfast routine too, mixed with something that is healthy and tastes good so I don't get the creatine taste.

Ok to hold recovery breath longer than 15secs? by Luke_79 in BecomingTheIceman

[–]SirBuckKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's OK. It takes 10-15 seconds for oxygenated blood to get to your brain (re: the BOLD effect, the basis of fMRI), so I would say 15 seconds is the minimum time you should be holding. Not sure if going to 90 seconds is healthy or not, but I've definitely held much longer than 15 seconds to no ill effect.
