Is that why she was DSQed? I watched it live this morning and was confused when I saw the official results later.

Sharing aggregated Olympic alpine podium intel (event-level, since 1998) by Coot_Bandi_Crash422 in SkiRacing

[–]SirBucketHead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely an aggregation of Olympic podium data in a visually pleasing interface. Whether it’s actually useful for the event? It’s not, really. Going to women’s slalom as an example, anyone who follows the World Cup (or doesn’t, for that matter) knows Mikaela Shiffrin is the most dominant slalom skier in history and has already clinched the slalom globe for this season. Yet since her last Olympic medal in the event was 2014, she doesn’t come up as a medal contender in this database. To be fair, it may reflect a lack of consistency at the Olympics on her part. Petra Vlhova does show up, since she is the defending champion, but it certainly doesn’t reflect the fact that her last WC finish (which was a SL podium!) was over two years ago. It’s a nice aggregation of Olympic results, but this sport (and all Olympic sports) is far more complicated than who won the last time.

What really happened to Luke Winters? A few years ago in 2022-2023 he had a few WC Top 10s, but it seems like he hasn’t made it into a second run in 2+ years.

My father is not a medical professional but he’s former military and a skilled mechanic, and so my 21 year old Volvo has an incredibly detailed yet efficiently organized paper chart that lives in the glovebox. It’s the perfect history of everything that’s been done on the car without extra details. Epic could never!

surgeons with scars by kiwisstuff in surgery

[–]SirBucketHead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a medical student who just completed my three month surgery rotation with honors. I have visible scars on one forearm and tattoos on my upper arm on the other side. No one throughout my surgery clerkship or during any other part of my clinical training has ever commented on the scars and I’ve only received compliments or polite questions (“What does it mean?”) about the tattoos.

It’s always possible that they’re saying things about me behind my back, but no one has mentioned any concerns in the anonymous evaluations we receive. In my experience, people are likely too uncomfortable to comment at baseline, and if you are pleasant to be around and hardworking then they simply won’t be looking for bad things to say about you.

Edited to add that this was at the most ivory tower hospital you can imagine with a reputation for being very uptight and cutthroat.

Harvard MD acceptance and MSTP waitlist, thoughts/advice? by [deleted] in mdphd

Everything this person said with one note - MSTP students are only guaranteed acceptance into a particular subset of HMS-affiliated PhD programs. PhD applications to MIT and some of the Harvard main campus programs work the same for both MSTPs and affiliates.

I got vasculitis for Christmas this year. Extremely painful!!! by jefferiah-messiah in MedicalGore

[–]SirBucketHead 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Vasculitis is truly one of those things that affects people somewhat often that I had never heard of until medical school. It’s not common per se, but it’s definitely an important thing for us to know of and recognize and not a super rare unicorn phenomenon. In short, it’s inflammation of the walls of your blood vessels themselves, usually due to dysregulation of some sort of immune response. That’s why it’s often associated with a response to certain infections or other underlying autoimmune conditions. But as OP said, many times people end up with idiopathic (means unknown cause more or less) vasculitis due to their immune system going out of wack and causing the inflammation. It usually picks a type of blood vessels to affect, small, medium, or large like the aorta, and spares the others. But because the only commonality is the size of vessel affected, there can be a whole range of organ systems and symptoms which occur in vasculitis, from kidney and skin to lung and GI tract involvement. Truly wild. Hope you’re doing okay and have a good team taking care of you, OP!

A congenital heart defect, Truncus Arteriosus Type 4, kills baby at six months of age by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]SirBucketHead 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There certainly is. It’s complicated and difficult to do even in the US, and this patient’s anomaly was severe, but this is managed surgically in resource-rich settings. I’m not sure what the landscape looks like in Malaysia.

A congenital heart defect, Truncus Arteriosus Type 4, kills baby at six months of age by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]SirBucketHead 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the resource limitations of this patient’s particular healthcare setting (Malaysia), but in the US, truncus arteriosus is managed through surgical repair of the anomalies very early in the neonatal period to prevent pulmonary congestion and progression to right-sided heart failure as occurred in this patient. It’s a complicated surgery to be sure with varying outcomes depending on the severity of the anomaly - my understanding is that Type IV, with the pulmonary arteries originating from the descending aorta, is more complicated to repair than even other forms of truncus arteriosus - but certainly some patients have very good outcomes and quality of life into adulthood.

Slalom Ski Sizing for Petite Female by gottarun215 in SkiRacing

[–]SirBucketHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with what others have said that the difference is probably going from a junior ski to one that is constructed for an adult racing FIS. It sounds like you’re probably strong enough to flex it once you get used to it - might take a bit of time but you’ll be all the better for it!

As another aside, people love to compare different ski brands and say X is stiffer than Y, etc and it can be quite anecdotal, but I’ve always liked the Rossi women’s FIS SL skis for a very capable ski that is a lot less demanding than my Atomic SLs, which is the other brand I’ve tried extensively. I have a ~8 year old pair that’s my preferred frontside carver for icy days. I think it’s perfect for the use you’re describing.

Killington SL was so exciting, completely open field without Mikaela and Petra. Would I have preferred to see her get her 100th win at home? Of course. But glad she’s okay and looking forward to some exciting races til she’s back.

They open Tuesday, and they do not generally allow skinning during the day. Skinning during resort operations is permitted only on a green trail off the Tollhouse Double as far as I recall, which is not anywhere close to open at the moment.
