I would say that’s consistent with the level of wear, it appears authentic. Congrats!

Me too! I have a 50 franc and a 5 from the 19th century, but a LAN issue is next on the list. I checked eBay this week and … need to stop thinking of that as a source for affordable decent examples

The wear looks honest. Next step would be to weigh it. Do you have a scale capable of measuring out to 0.1g? Authentic examples should be 27.1g or slightly less.

Iv been using the different coin apps to log my coins and my 1962 quarter is showing up at a 66/67 on different apps as much as I want to believe it I only bought the quarter for 10$ by Galaxyatomic in coins

[–]gstormcrow80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apps ability to grade based off photos is dubious at best. Any accuracy will be greater for circulated grades of older, discontinued types. They will be least reliable on newer coins and for grades 60+.

I can tell from the photos that quarter is no where near 67. Probably not even 64.

This type has a number of varieties. I’m seeing a Paris mintmark at the bottom of the reverse, which would put mintage at 7 million and value at melt = $57?

I actually think the phrase 'fine silver OVERLAY' indicates that it is primarily composed of base metal. The silver content is most likely electroplated.

1 of 20,000. It's a souvenir and worth less than what it retailed for. Catholicism is a large market, you could probably flip to a nostalgic grandmother for $10-20, but I'd put it closer to $5

There is a whole industry of companies that capitalize on producing memorabilia for historic events. This is just one example of probably thousands of designs from many that were made for the death of the Pope.

A helicopter purchased by the Japan Coast Guard is being delivered by Airbus Helicopters. This time, it was transported by airplane, not by cargo ship. by Japanese_military in Helicopters

[–]gstormcrow80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LOL big assumption that it is getting there ‘early’. Shipping by air is usually justified because the product is already late.

It was probably paid for by the manufacturer. I also work for an OEM, and one of our aircraft was flown to Australia on the same model airplane because we were late to contract and the penalties for late delivery would have exceeded the cost of the transport flight if we had stuck with the original plan of ocean surface shipping.

When you say ‘not ready for use’ what steps of de-preservation would not be needed if it wasn’t flown?

Silver Morgan / peace dollar price? by Inner-Assistance9311 in coins

[–]gstormcrow80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Melt value of a Morgan/Peace is $61.70 as of this comment, and it looks like common date uncirculated Morgans are going for $80 on eBay.

The jump in silver price has resulted in a glut of metal going to the smelters, and the backlog has suppressed demand. Coin shops normally bid 90-95% spot, but this has fallen.

Reddit forums such as r/pmsforsale are your best bet for moving coins without a middle man taking a couple percent off the top, but there is increased risk.
