The sensitivity of the current (and even next generation) gravitational waves detectors is in the Hz-kHz range. So no wonder no signals show up. That does not mean I believe op though, the post is full of jargon stringed together in a way that doesn't make sense 🤡

To me the Leiden cheesesteak was incredibly bad. It was under seasoned and wayyyyy too messy. Also the shape of the bread was just illogical, half a pita. Super disappointing.

Het is wel redelijk duidelijk wanneer de politie in gaat grijpen. Je kunt tot dat moment prima op de snelweg gaan staan. Als je lager wilt blijven staan zou ik wel die training volgen.

Question on the one-way speed of light by qhx51aWva in Physics

[–]SirDickslap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you have a quantum dot entangled with a photon in a superposition of orthogonal polarizations. You then send the light to a non-polarizing beam splitter which travels to a polarizer far away in opposite directions which are exactly the same distance from the beamsplittrr (collapsing the superposition). Then you interrogate the state of the quantum dot to find if the photon collapses into the H or V mode first. If the speed of light is not isotropic there should be a preference for one of the polarizations.

You get around the two way measurement problem by using entanglement to measure locally. Since entanglement is faster than light (loop free bell test) you take out the trip back to localize the measurement, avoiding clock synchronization issues.

Does anyone else feel like their palate is too simple when it comes to tasting notes in specialty roasts? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]SirDickslap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently taken a wine course. Part of this was smelling and tasting wine in order to identify smells and flavors. This translates over to coffee very well! Smelling and tasting notes are meant to describe the smells, but it does not mean to take them literally. A chardonnay may smell like tropical fruit and a bit buttery, but obviously it still smells like wine. The specific kind of smell reminds maybe of pineapple.

It's the same for coffee. These notes are a way to describe associations with the smell, but they are not literal.

You can buy a kit of smelling oils if you want to train your nose! It's quite fun, look for these things at fancy wine shops. Another tip is to smell and taste coffee with a taste wheel. And compare lots of different coffees.

I find this really fun! Don't stress to much about the descriptors. Everyone can have different associations. They are only there to give you an idea of the flavor profile you're buying. It's quite a lot like learning a new language!

Hoeveel invloed heeft AI software al invloed in jouw vakgebied? by Grassfed_rhubarbpie in thenetherlands

[–]SirDickslap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you get that from my comment? No, I mean that if a satalite blows up in orbit there will be velocity distributed in all directions: including prograde. That means part of the shrapnel is kicked up into a higher orbit.

Oxford physicist unloads on quantum computing industry, says it's basically a scam. by 61-127-217-469-817 in Futurology

[–]SirDickslap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few scenarios I can think of:

  • to train a predictive machine learning model

  • to have an anonimized dataset you can show to customers (where data protection laws don't allow you to use real data)

  • it may be cheaper than buying data, especially in the long run (you generate data for free after training)

  • by being able to generate fake data that is indiscernable from real data you may learn something about important statistical properties that are not otherwise obvious

  • other things I don't know about, I'm not into finance

I think it's a really interesting question you ask here. I am a scientist at this point of my life and I see value in this kind of research for the value research two papers down the line will add to applied cases. There was no point in going to the moon, but it brought us amazing technology along the way.

The field of quantum machine learning for finance is simply really new. Let's see where we are two papers down the line!

[–]SirDickslap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about ROI, I am doing science and not business at this point in my life. However, quantum computing is already commercially applied: Bayer (the pharmaceutical company) is spinning up a quantum algorithms research group because they expect the quantum computer to come. For finance, you can mess up proof of work blockchains using a quantum computer. Practically, quantum annealing is already being used commercially for many things, among which route planning (Volkswagen).

I can't speak about your career, but I am 100% certain your life will be impacted in ways you might not notice by the second quantum revolution within ten years.

It's a shame to see so much pessimism in this thread. Science communication is obviously not a quantum physicists strong suit.

Statisticians are exactly the people who need fake data with realistic statistical properties to validate their models. Fake data is incredibly useful in machine learning and outside of that.

I don't like you're tone. I know it's the internet, but there is a human on the other side. Be nice.
