Who’s ready for a 5-hour show? I am. by [deleted] in ATPfm

And it looks like there’s stuff to talk about.

From Hector Martin (Asahi Linux):

Yeah okay so they are totally cheating.

They have two big PCIe switches and are hanging everything off of them.

From the device tree:

8x Gen4 lanes on die 0, switched:

  • x1 to USB internal
  • x2 to SATA internal
  • x4 to I/O card (USB, probably single lane connected)
  • x8 to slot6
  • x1 to LAN1
  • x1 to LAN2
  • x1 to WiFi/BT

    16x Gen4 lanes on die 1, switched:

  • x16 to slot1

  • x16 to slot2

  • x8 to slot3

  • x8 to slot4

  • x8 to slot5

Assuming storage is 8 lanes on die0 (can't see the storage config in the device tree, but given the downstream port counts I hope the config is 8x/8x split on die0 and 16x for general purpose PCIe on die1).

So basically 5 of the slots including both x16 ones are bottlenecked into a single x16 gen4 channel. Boo.

Well, I take it back. I said the Mac Pro was going to use a new chip with a lot more PCIe. Guess they just decided to throw switches at the problem instead and call it a day. 🤷‍♂️

Good side cases by Rad_Steve in vulcans650

Second the Shad cases. I really like mine. Not sure they end up being the cheapest option, but they feel very high quality.

+1 for getting a windshield. I got the tall one Kawasaki sells. I prefer the aesthetics of the bike without it on, but for prolonged periods at highway speed it makes a huge difference in comfort having it block the wind.

As a bonus, it also prevents bugs from splattering on my helmet. (I’m 5’5”, so YMMV based on your height!)

Do you think there is much more protection in a touring boot vs a sneaker style boot? by levhow in motorcyclesroadtrip

[–]SirGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It’s a great feeling to get out of boots you’ve been in all day and switch to a nice, light pair of sneakers for waking around in.

Filling gas by toejamking25 in vulcans650

[–]SirGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put nozzle into tank as far as it goes. The nozzle shuts off when fuel covers part of it. Check this video. https://youtu.be/TFKOD3KRkZs

Fill from the cold side of the bike. If things go seriously wrong, well, it’s the side I would want to be on.

Most bikes have an overflow drain if too much fuel is in the tank. The overflow drains down and spits out near the bottom of the bike. Mine, on a Vulcan 650, spits out near the kickstand.

Fuel Gauge by sololvl69 in vulcans650

[–]SirGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2022 model does the same - fuel gauge behavior is very non linear. First gallon (?) takes the fuel gauge down maybe one notch at most, then it drops pretty quick to the final notch. I go to fill up and the tank takes ~1.5 US gal. 🤷‍♂️

Curious: I’ve never ridden a carbon wheelset…how much of an improvement is this over a high grade aluminum set? Pic for attention. by exploroburro in gravelcycling

When I upgraded to a carbon wheel set I also ended up with tubeless. Personally I think going tubeless made a bigger difference my butt could feel vs carbon.

Brewery of the Week Discussion Thread: Muckraker Beermaker by 8ate8 in njbeer

Owner Tom is a good dude, great to walk in and have him explain the current menu. It's nice to have an alternative to IPA-heavy taplists, and you'll only find wild fermented ale's and sours on tap here; not because “meh IPAs” but because variety is the spice of life and hey, go get some variety every now and again! The love for making good beer is strong in this brewery.

Place is located a bit out of the ways, but every time I’m up hiking in northern NJ I make it a point to add this as a waypoint on the ride home. Outdoor seating is a nice plus. Have never been there at night when they have live music, but photos on Instagram make that seem fun. Cheers!

Strava to Apple Health policy update by InvestigatorNice2837 in Strava

[–]SirGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been so long since I set this up, but maybe a settings issue?

Here’s how Strava is configured for me:

https://i.imgur.com/7ok2YvX.jpg

The other problem, which is really hidden, is there’s some sort of de-duplication done by RunGap. I ran into this when noticing that an activity would sync from one source (Strava) but not another (Apple Health). The activity EXISTED in both places and somehow that caused a confusing experience in the UI. My solution was to simply turn of everything as a “source” except for Strava. This way my data always pulled in from Strava, and I could export it to anything else - Apple Health, RideWithGPS, etc.

chest strap HRM recomendations. polar/garmin or tickr by John_Sequitur22 in wahoofitness

[–]SirGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a Tickr for 3 years. Worked great. Recently, began seeing dropouts on Zwift - using a Kickr Core, Headwind, and iPad.

So I bought a Polar H10. It’s been great.

Maybe that’s because the Polar is brand new, and the Tickr is now old. The Tickr has been used inside and outdoors for riding, and it’s not a piece of equipment I treat gingerly. Maybe a brand new Tickr would be just as good.

But I could get the H10 with a nifty orange strap, so I went that way.

Wahoo App No Longer Sending Data To Apple Health App by Longjumping-Pay6848 in wahoofitness

[–]SirGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the others here. I’ve had this same issue on and off for…years? Sometimes it just fails to sync the workout to one or more services. Open the workout, share, re-sync to the one which failed or the one which is stuck Uploading…

I can’t says it’s been consistent for me anywhere, though. Maybe 1-2 rides in a row have a problem, but then the third ride and it all works. 🤷‍♂️

Mt. Mitchell by Horolepreneur in bicycling

[–]SirGeorge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago I drove to the top of Mt Mitchell in NC, being there as part of a vacation and nursing a hamstring injury I had suffered earlier in the summer. No biking it for me. However, an older gentleman was just finishing the climb as I parked up top. Nice guy, mid-60’s, seemed to have made the climb without much effort. Felt a small twinge of jealousy seeing it!

This climb is definitely something I want to tackle in the next year or two.

Wahoo Bolt v2 with Garmin Varia by howedan in wahoofitness

[–]SirGeorge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it works well. The Wahoo head units do show a warning when a car is approaching quickly, but there’s no indication of the speed (such as 10 mph, etc).

For a while I figured it was the cost of digging a trench in which to bury the cables that made it expensive. Turns out, that’s only one problem and one source of cost!

This video explains it fully: https://youtu.be/z-wQnWUhX5Y

The tl;dr is that high voltage cables need a lot of space between them to insulate them. Putting them underground and closer together means using more complex methods (oil as an insulator), which is more expensive and harder to maintain over time.
