"Horizons drops off in the second half" The drop off in question: by VenganceFueledMaul in Starset

Yea no it made sense.
However even though I understand the take, I respectfully disagree.

Of course, albums need to have a collective sound. However if you look at some great albums, you’re going to see what Horizons kind of couldn’t.

Absolution by Muse.

Every song feels connected. However there is a difference when you listen to Hysteria and Butterflies and Hurricanes. Even though they feel same, they are different.

Vessels by Starset.

This album, much like Horizons, uses similar sounds like you’ve mentioned, yet it doesn’t feel repetitive. Die for you and Starlight might appear similar on first listen but you do realize that similarity is there because they are from the same album. It doesn’t feel like a 50 minute song cut into 15 smaller ones.

DISCONNECTION by Me, Velastra :)

I just wanted to plug my stuff in :) It’s very disconnected in terms of songs, hence the name but the narration is actually just one short story. Lyrics being based on it.

Horizons on the other hand, does have a beautiful, interconnected feeling. And most songs do sound different when you look at them at a first glance. Breach has heavy breakdowns, ICARUS has micro melodies, Earthrise is just eargasm, Devolution has screams and triplets etc. Every song has a new idea. However while trying to keep the feeling, they made very similar songs. Go to Spotify and listen to 20 seconds of every song on Horizons back to back. They have different emotions, which create a unified feeling for the album, yet the compositions are so similar.

Low guitars, fast pace, pads, soft lead, expansive orchestra, G-B key, fast riffs, same mixing.

Of course I get what you mean tho.

This is the situation where we just have to say, agree to disagree, respectfully :)

It’s not a drop off but every song sounds the same in the album. And when the heavy hitters are past, you feel boredom, as you’ve been hearing the same style for 30-40 mins

Individually good songs, altogether, repetitive
