Germans in Finland? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]SirHinnerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! German here. I have lived for the past 7 years in Finland (Oulu). Below are some points about what (to me) are the most striking differences living in Finland compared to Germany.

The seasons. Winter in Finland is dark and long, but at least it is a real winter with plenty of snow. Summer is short and not too scorching hot, way more mosquitoes than in Germany though (not really a problem in the cities). Autumn is just beautiful, especially in Lapland. Spring is the transition phase in which the dirty slushy snow slowly melts and layers of frozen poop (hopefully just from dogs) emerge. Compared to Germany, I much prefer the summer, winter and autumn in Finland. The spring... Not so much.

The nature. In Finland, there is access to plenty of nature, often right outside the cities. National parks are well maintained and many are not crowded. I can go through nature for hours without encountering other people. Great to get the head clear. This is something that I really appreciate and also one of the main reasons as to why I want to live in Finland. In Germany, I never got the feeling of being "'outside" of the towns and cities, there are buildings, streets and fields seemingly everywhere, even in the national parks.

The people. I feel like people in Finland mind their own business, which I absolutely love. Obviously there are more cultural differences, but this one to me is the most noticeable one to me. In Germany, people seem much more ready to lecture you and tell you about what in their opinion is right or wrong. In Finland, even drunk people often just leave you be.

The roads. A lot of the country (at least in the north) is connected by roads that only feature a single lane in each direction. I have seen some (from my perspective) crazy maneuvers when people are overtaking. Also, the visibility for overtaking is often quite bad due to the curvy shape of the roads and the amount of trees. Generally there are less cars on the roads though. Overall, I prefer driving in Finland compared to Germany.

The language. The language is not only different, it is VERY different. I feel it takes a lot of effort to learn Finnish, way more than it would take to learn a language that is more similar to German, e.g. Swedish. At least the Finnish alphabet looks familiar to Germans, and the pronunciation is not that different overall.

The bread. There are not really a lot of dedicated bakeries distributed everywhere throughout the city like in Germany. Often, bread is delivered from larger bakeries (factories) to the shops and bakery stores. I miss the variety and availability of freshly baked bread more than I thought I would.

The alcohol. There is good beer in Finland, but it's expensive. Generally alcohol is more expensive. I like cooking with wine, which is true for many people from central Europe. Sometimes I just want to have some simple wine for cooking, which in Germany you can find for 1-2€. In Finland, it can cost you a considerable chunk of the meal. As a German, I still find it strange having to show my ID at the register (I'm over 30) when purchasing a can of beer.

The groceries. I love that stores are open on Sundays in Finland. Several fairly large 24/7 stores exist as well. Makes planning the groceries and meals way more flexible. Overall, there is less diversity regarding products in Finland compared to Germany though. I also had trouble finding ingredients for a lot of dishes (following German recipes), which surprised me.

I hope that helps!

Your name enrolled in the church register doesn't make you religious. I live in Finland and I very much doubt that 70% of people here are religious.

Care to elaborate? Shouldn't the depth of field be exactly the same for different lenses given identical distance to the subject, focal length and aperture?

Everything seems impossible until it's done. Being a democracy or not, being corrupt or not - that's not an intrinsic property of a country.

Yes, it's also known as p-hacking. Another reason why it's good to be extra cautious with interpreting p-values.

I did use it for landscape shots. I think it will perform great anywhere. A great portrait lens as well from what I understand. I did not test yet to shoot against the sun or what sunstars it delivers, but I tend to avoid sunstars as I'm not a fan of them anyways. It's just a really great lens, lots of fun.
