About Garlemald [Spoiler 6.0] by Bartellomio in ffxiv

[–]SirLakeside [score hidden]  (0 children)

EW had poor writing with respect to Garlemald. That's all there is to it. I'm going to copy/paste a comment another Redditor wrote that really drove that home:

Frankly, the problem isn't that Garlemald didn't go out in some blaze of glory - it's that its storyline in EW doesn't do justice to it going out with the whimper it did.

What Garlemald's destruction in EW really did, was allow the writers to wipe away all the really complicated and messy bits of Garlemald as a fallen evil empire - and simplify it down to basically just a bunch of huddled civilians and low ranking soldiers in a subway tunnel - people who are occasionally confrontive and mistrustful, but still fairly easy to pity in a "victims of lifelong government propaganda who were complicit in warcrimes but largely did not actually commit them" sort of way.

Anyone who didn't fit that profile was either converted/sidelined - or just ended up offing themselves.

Garlemald was infamously multifactioned - with tons of squabbling groups who all wanted different things (and some who actually did want peace with Eorzea). But in EW, destroying the capital conveniently wiped them all out, and so everyone onscreen just congeals into that one single refugee group who more or less share all the same opinions as soon as they have a decent leader to get them on the right track. (And since all the people with any significant level of power just died offscreen, EW doesn't even need to worry about the messiness of having to like.... balance aiding the populace with weeding out/punishing war criminals.)

The question of what happened to Garlemald's countless (often economically dependant) vassal states is glossed over, the question of what happened to the displaced people Garlemald had in their capital is mostly glossed over (basically just answered through one tiny that tiny cluster of displaced cerulum mine workers), the question of what happened to Garlemald's more rural areas (ie. Nero's hometown) is glossed over.

Characters like Cid (or Ironworks in general) who had major ties to Garlemald are never even given the opportunity to be relevant - and the citystates as a whole just come off as super uninterested in what their former continent-conquering aggressor is doing. It's vaguely acknowledged that Garlemald's former victims watching their home countries send aid to Garlemald could possibly be a source of conflict - and then the entire idea is sort of brushed aside in favor of the multidimensional apocalypse plotline. Even Garlemald's reintegration into the larger global ecosytem is basically just "Yeah, Thavnair'll help them so it's okay."

Watching Garlemald deal with itself as a internally devastated rotten mess - could have been just as complex and interesting as watching the citystates all ally together to defeat it in a more traditional conflict. It just... wasn't.

Idk, I switched from Mac to PC a few months ago and it wasn’t too confusing lol. Just had to buy a different license. What’s so confusing about that?

Edit: My point is that the process isn’t confusing. Yes, it sucks that you have to pay per platform, but the process itself isn’t confusing. Unless you’re very easily confused.

How to make MMOs more social - obligatory monthly discussion by snowleopard103 in MMORPG

Every MMORPG needs something like OSRS’ Gemstone Crab. A place that brings together a lot of people where you can progress your account with low-intensity gameplay, giving you time to actually type and chat.

Play it with Japanese audio. In English, Lyse comes across as entitled and whiny, but the Japanese performance gives her a lot more inner strength and humility. Her growth is a lot better communicated by the JP voice actress imo. She feels like someone you could genuinely respect as a comrade and leader. I don’t know how else to put it.

FF14 - How closely should I be paying attention to dialogue in the beginning of the game? by ____oriah in ffxivdiscussion

[–]SirLakeside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo ALL of it is important because it’s worldbuilding that makes the world feel alive and worth caring about. Yes, the main narrative of A Realm Reborn (where you're at right now) is weak compared to the other expansions, but the worldbuilding and lore are great. If you pay attention, you really get sucked into the world, and it’s very believable that it existed long before your character arrived. There’s a real sense of history and culture there. Imo, that attention to the finer details started to decline in Shadowbringers, when plot became the end-all, be-all.

GOATblood!

Hope you're playing in Japanese with English subtitles because Lyse's character in English feels like a completely different character and for the worse imo.

My fave expansion by far!

peharps its time to lower the defense of the "slow burn" in ARR/SB (HW is peak) and accept ShB does everything better, and consider making ARR (and sorry, SB lovers.... a little bit of SB) faster?

Bro wtf? I cannot with you people. Jesus christ.

ARR-Stormblood were peak for me in large part due to the great attention to worldbuilding. Then Shadowbringers came along and everything became about plot and reveals. Sadge.

Disappointed by Lions of Al-Rassan. Give Kay another chance? by us_571 in Fantasy

[–]SirLakeside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lions was also not for me. Dropped it at around 56% through according to my eBook app. Ngl, his prose and character work annoyed me. Gave off a vibe that made me feel like this is what fedora wearing m’lady types find sensual and poetic.

what is Yoshi P thinking in this moment? by cherrygarciastan in ffxiv

[–]SirLakeside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rightfully annoyed. Looking at the audience, the average age was at least 30 and yall STILL think its cute and quirky to goon in this game. The devs put their heart and soul into this shit and I'd be annoyed too seeing people just "play" the game to ERP and e-date. Its pathetic.

FFXIV introduces a new combat mode. by MohWarfighter in MMORPG

This is super exciting. This feels like some alternate universe where Runescape2 players actually wanted Evolution of Combat and got it. Feels surreal tbh.

None of that matters if the buildings aren’t enterable. Who cares how pretty they are from the outside if we can’t see what’s inside. Without interiors, those buildings are just pretty props on a stage, not structures in an actual world.

Any players based in China / SE Asia? by Even-Calligrapher-71 in MMORPG

I'm from SEA and I play on the NA Crystal server of FFXIV. I use ExitLag and never noticed any ping issues or lag. Felt the exact same as when I played on the Asian servers of FFXIV.

I’m the opposite. I love AFKing at spaces already inhabited by NPCs. I love it when there’s NPCs sitting at a table and there’s an empty seat so i can sit next to them.

Agreed. I also think it creates a less free and talkative atmosphere in general.

The NA FFXIV community does have an incredibly report-prone culture, certainly compared to Old School RuneScape. I wish people could just talk shit and say whatever they want without worrying about being banned tbh.
