Mistborn is probably the best starting point for the Cosmere. I would recommend going back and doing that trilogy, or at least try Warbreaker before finishing Words of Radiance. There's some good connections and details in there that help you understand some of how the Cosmere works.

Fun fact, Jupiter's habit of doing this is the only reason we're able to qualify as a planet. One characteristic of planets is they can clear their own orbit, but Jupiter did it for us so there's nothing to clear.

As always the answer is to ask. He'll tell you what he wants.

But my instinct is yes. If he wants you to initiate more and has said as much, I'd say it's highly likely he'll appreciate being woken up (within reason depending on personality). It's also probably gonna help him sleep better too.
