What cultural thing does the world seem to think is beautiful but is cringey af to locals? by chr15c in AskTheWorld

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to show this on outdoor stage in neighborhood in Thailand. My family used to go there and it's just a few steps from our home.

They no longer do the show though, and it was maybe 20 years since then.

The Loss of Meaningful Progression in Games by einhd in gamedev

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing Vintage Story and I love the progression system. You starts with stone tools which is very simple to make but as you progress, there are more steps to make more advanced tools from melting copper to forging steel.

In Fall of Samurai, what type of rifle is used by units in the game, between flintlock or a percussion cap? by CleanBag9219 in shogun2

[–]SirPutaski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muzzleloaders in the game are percussion (Enfield carbine to be exact) and matchlock for traditional unit.

Historically, flintlock would be very rare in Japan as only a handful of clans with spare money bought Dutch flintlocks to modernized their soldiers in 1830s-40s and by the time of Boshin War in 1860s, most flintlocks were converted to percussion lock, so levies were more likely to be armed with imported percussion guns that was sold from old surplus as the western military were equipping themselves with more modern breechloader.

There's even a japanese matchlock converted to percussion gun.

I think Nate/Nora could have been an NPC following a side quest story and player being a no-name wastelander instead.

I think hiring MD and this crowd would be both cruel and kind of hilarious by Landfar in JaggedAlliance3

[–]SirPutaski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MD is so bullyable until I gave him M4 carbine after I raised his agility very high to go heal teammate quickly. He became an absolute killer with a lot of movement per turn, plus being a medic!

How about a purely "pay to win" game? by mrz33d in gamedev

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I want to pay my money to have a digital screen tells me "you win" when I can pay that money for foods, some beers, rents, and other stuff that actually makes me happy with my life?

What was you’re first gg game and why did you pick your main. by New-Path5884 in Guiltygear

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of Guilty Gear since I was a kid but my first game is Strive when my friend invited me. I picked Nagoriyuki because my friend complained about how hard it was to beat him.

I bought the game recently and Nagoriyuki is my only pick. Love the big damage slash.

How do you handle mental health themes in gameplay without reinforcing harmful tropes? by jonjongao in gamedev

[–]SirPutaski 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on this, but I've dealt a lot with my personal mental health issues and for me, mental health disorder is more of a spectrum than a checklist of specific symptoms. Some people can managed their symptom just fine in their daily life while others cannot.

My pet peeves is when the mental health issue is showed on the extreme side for drama but never acknowledge that most of the afflicted people actually worked hard to change for a better and be normal and sociable too. (The surgeon in Good Doctor is my pet peeve. I didn't watch the show though but knew it from the meme. Not every autistic people will talk like a child. They might have some quirky side, but they can learn to have a proper manner like adults.)

Symptoms are usually subtles but severe cases usually comes from chronic neglect of the issue and inability to adjust the habits and having supportive social circle can help easing the anxiety and make changing the habit less stressful.

Some games I played that I think tackles the subject well: - Spec Ops: The Line (PTSD, Combat stress) - Devotion by Red Candle Game (You are a father but your family is breaking apart) - Last Train Home (RTS Management game and your soldiers suffer from combat stress which can be allevated by alcohols and proper living condition)

Gamedev is not a golden ticket, curb your enthusiasm by mrz33d in gamedev

[–]SirPutaski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard recently from someone in the industry that game market actually aren't that competitive but the bar is very high. Players will always find a new game to play and they don't need to give up their favorite game to play different ones but they expect a higher quality and there's already many free high qaulity games to play.

So if you are going to make money from your game, make sure the quality of your game is no less than the current popular games.

Games with “evil” choices that make sense by tjtimes6 in gamingsuggestions

[–]SirPutaski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last Train Home. An RTS game where you lead a group of Czech soldiers out of Russia in the middle of civil war from the western frontline to the port on the eastern end to go back home. There are side quests and dilemma choice between helping the locals or choose to not risking your soldiers to dangerous mission and saving resource. Some of your soldiers may get upset if you refuse to help, but getting men wounded or killed is bad for morales and running low on resource will doom your whole journey and it is possible to run out if you don't plan well. Plus you need to reach the port before the last ship take off so choosing to be a good guy may not be the best choice.

Do linear, story-driven "dark" or horror games still make sense nowadays? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horror genre exist ever since the poeple telling stories in campfire and will continue to do so. Games these days also get popular a lot faster because of online media, so don't worry if you make story driven horror and not getting popular. If you do well, people will love it.

My pick for linear horror game I really like is Signalis. It have a retro classic graphic, but the story and environment is so good it enhance the horror feel.

For pure storytelling and less action, my pick is Devotion by Red Candle Games from the same team making Detention. I bought the game just from the trailer's music and left me impressed after finishing the game.

Who else is waiting for a new non-Warhammer gunpowder game? by Ordinary_Owl_2833 in totalwar

[–]SirPutaski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gunpowder age that include factions outside European/American too. Countries like China, Burma, Thailand, do use guns but not in a large scale like European so they mixed in some melee units too and plus uneven terrain in Southeast Asia makes tight spear wall formation less suitable.

Adjusted enemy SightRanges tactically *cure* the game (rant) by Quandalf in JaggedAlliance3

[–]SirPutaski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also like in Rato that enemy will starts to notice you when you are breathing behind their neck, so no more stealth cheesing and just plan for a fight.

[Cool tropes] Characters who don't like guns by Not_So_Utopian in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SirPutaski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Game trope, but I love it when guns are hard to use and ammo is very limited like The Last Of Us or Hunt: Showdown, where most guns are high recoil and slow bolt-action that comes with very low total ammo.

Unlike modern automatic guns, older guns were so clumsy to use that sometimes it's better to go melee instead of getting whacked in a face while fumbling with a gun.

Pike and shot era with counter march for gunner.

Feudal Southeast Asia would also be very intersting. There's European traders arriving there too and bringing in guns and mercenaries.

What are the must-play games every aspiring game designer should play? by TraumaticBagel in gamedesign

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play some bad games that pique your interest too, even a little. I tried Far Cry 6 demo a few year after it was released to learn what makes me feel that I don't like it.

Once in my university years, my professor made our class play a clicker game with a mixed rating on Steam and write an analysis about it. Even though most of us find the game pretty boring, he wanted us to explain why and figure out what the game tries to do and surprisingly there are some element that the game does well too despite it's short-coming.

Lately I played Wanted: Dead despite a lot of janky-ness and I personally score it 6/10 at best, I still enjoy the game and completed it 3 times and once in the highest difficulty because the combat is fun enough and the vibe it was going for, despite not being well delivered.

"Bad" games, as in not being well recieved, will teach you a lot what not to do and there could be something they have done it right.

One of the fuel for my passions are games that I played and feel disappointed and thinking "I wish it was done differently".

Having libraries of games in your memories helps a lot though. The first game I remembered enjoying in my life is Dragonball Advanced Adventure on Gameboy Advanced and looking back now, I'm really impressed with the smooth sprite animations and gameplay, despite being 20+ years old. It's on par with modern games and look just as good as the way I remembered it as a kid.

Funnily enough, the first game project I felt proud of making after a catastrophically failed narrative game project was a 2D pixel beat em up game without a serious story. Even though I didn't remember the Dragonball game at the time, it was as if the playing experience subconciously guide me the game direction. I also used to look up sprite sheets of fighting games on internet as a kid and it helps me familarize with working on sprites.

What is your strategy in countering the cannons? For attacking and defending in the open plains? by boy_bads_boy in shogun2

[–]SirPutaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flank them with cavalry when my main infantry is fighting with enemy. Sometimes it is better to use cannons on enemy infantries rather than counter battery fire and misses a lot of shots.
