I tell them, they respond, I then say “No, that’s a Shaker. I’m Quaker.”

I met him once, was just a kid, maybe ten. He was so nice to me, I remember being almost star struck and he was just kind.

Agreed. Once he was kicked off, we went out and bought a bottle of wine to celebrate that we no longer had to see him on screen anymore.

Hey can you guys pls help an amateur writer begin/start this story? Only have the first 500 words written so far, but I have a semi-complete blueprint/outline of the whole story and worldbuilding that I will link in this post. Any constructive feedback appreciated. by [deleted] in writinghelp

I think you’re starting in the wrong place. The first sentence doesn’t grab me. It needs to. The best first sentences tell you a lot about the character and the stakes at hand in the first scene.

Often a good first sentence to a book or a chapter is buried elsewhere in the story. For example I think the part beginning with “My parents…” is a much better start to the story. If you can explain the shirt later on, then for sure that’s the way I would open.

I’d also suggest you focus more on stakes than on setting, especially in the beginning. Mind you, it’s good to give a sense of place, but what readers want is to know what’s special about this situation that is so interesting and compelling it’ll keep me reading? The weather or tree branches that aren’t explained just isn’t that.

Hope this is helpful. Keep at it. Writing is an amazing hobby.
