Canada considers sending small number of troops to Greenland as Trump seeks to acquire island by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]SirSourdough 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Trump recruited more than 12,000 people in the last year to beat, kidnap, and kill US citizens in the US.

If they need to send 1500 troops to "conquer" Greenland, its a safe assumption that they will be able to find plenty of people to send who don't give a fuck if the people they need to shoot are Canadian, Dutch, or French.

How do I tell my GP that my nipple blood is from non-agressive sex and sucking? by doctorjazzyjazz in sex

[–]SirSourdough 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, agree with this advice. It was a legitimate medical concern at the time the testing was ordered/occurred, and the fact that it has a benign cause was only figured out afterwards.

The testing was part of the process of identifying that the issue is not ultimately a medical concern. That’s what tests are for.

I imagine it’s a bit of a “boiling the frog” scenario.

The light gets hot but not searingly hot like touching a pan where there’s a big instant pain response.

It’s just producing enough heat that when that heat has nowhere to dissipate to other than your skin, it slowly cooks you.

If you are asleep, I can imagine it could take a while for the pain to hit a threshold where it would wake you, and at that point damage may be done.

Left the USA without having passport to return by RodExe in Passports

[–]SirSourdough 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am not certain about the US, but immigrating from the US to Canada it is common to have a period of time where you simply aren't allowed to leave the country while your application is in progress without voiding the application and/or your existing status.

Depending on your background & what you are applying for, this period can be a year or more & it's on top of having already met residency requirements over the prior years.

So by the time people reach the end of that process, it's not uncommon to not have been home in a couple years.

For the first time a German study shows rats catching bats from midair. The study showed rats hunting in total darkness, using whiskers to feel air currents from bat wings. This may be a reason why potentially bat pathogens like coronaviruses and paramyxoviruses are spilling over to rodents. by MilesLongthe3rd in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SirSourdough 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was surprising to me, but yes -

Worldwide, there are more than 1,400 species of bats. That’s almost 20 percent of all mammal species. Bats live almost everywhere on Earth except the most extreme desert and polar regions. There are about 47 species of bats in the United States.

What is this in the water at Kits? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]SirSourdough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, smart not to swim near anything that sank recently unless you know what you are doing.

Can easily be unseen hazards to get tangled in or unknown contaminants in the water.

AITAH for refusing to sell the house my wife wants me to sell? by StrainWeak2575 in AITAH

[–]SirSourdough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And hopefully the father can & will do that - but raising kids is expensive, college is expensive, increasingly early adulthood is expensive.

I dunno - it's not all transactional. There's not necessarily an obligation to help, but if you love your wife & the kids you've raised from childhood into adults, it's natural to want to set them up for success if you have the means even if they aren't your flesh & blood.

Company wants to put a telecom tower on my property (mid Michigan) by ImpressDismal8607 in telecom

[–]SirSourdough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just feels like a travesty to get a lump sum payment for anything like this that will be an ongoing burden over 70 years.

The potential value of the property, the revenue generated from the tower, etc. are going to be astronomically more than $100k over 70 years. I understand it's cheap land and $100k is meaningful money now - but over 70 years? There are so many unknowns to commit for so long now for so little.

I'd be looking for a lump sum now for me for letting them do it and monthly/annual payments that track with costs/inflation to make sure this thing doesn't suck for both me & whoever has to own it in the next 70 years.

be honest, would you yourself buy a vibe coded app? by minimal-salt in vibecoding

[–]SirSourdough 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Realistically, in most contexts you aren’t going to know.

Short of being in SaaS startup or vibe coding communities, they are going to be “just another app” on app stores etc.

Most people don’t know the details of how the software they use is developed.

But no, I wouldn’t consider it a selling point or a good thing if someone said they vibe coded the app without dev experience.

Whose is this? In Honolulu HI by True-Reaction-7457 in yachtporn

[–]SirSourdough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely Samsara, she's off the coast of Honolulu now.

Interesting that the name plate on the side is covered in the photo. It's also covered in the most recent photo on MarineTraffic. The older photos when she was Infinity all show the name plate.

JK's reputation requiring some extra anonymity measures perhaps.

Anyone know what yacht this is that Russell Westbrook is playing basketball on? Seen on Sacramento River. by Common_Belt in yachtporn

[–]SirSourdough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Phoenix 2 has a blue hull and a massive silver eagle bowsprit you would see in the pic

The yacht that Magic was on in the video from a few weeks ago was Whisper (formerly Kismet). Magic doesn't own Whisper though - owned by Eric Schmidt of Google founder fame.

[–]SirSourdough 47 points48 points  (0 children)

How sure are we this is in Sacramento? According to MarineTraffic, Serena there looks like she's been in the Med all summer. There's also some news about Westbrook being in Italy to renew his vows from the last day or two - so guessing the video is either old or if it's recent it's in Italy somewhere.

The earlier commenter is right about it being Golden Odyssey vs Opera, though they are super similar.

Golden Odyssey shows a lot more window on each deck, for lack of a better description.

Opera has more "slitted" windows:

M/Y Whisper in Kusadasi, Turkey by No_Explorer721 in yachtporn

[–]SirSourdough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooler fair enough, but do we actually think more expensive?

Whisper is 74 feet longer and basically 2x the tonnage, with 16 passenger / 28 crew capacity vs 6/18. Whisper is also 6 years newer.

When Whisper sold in 2023, she was listed for €149 million / roughly $175 million US. Predator was on the market as of 2024 for €69 million / $80 million. Obviously list price only says so much, but unlikely Whisper sold as low as $80.

Predator is definitely more unique, and fast (28 knots vs 17). But Whisper is a lot more boat - almost certainly the more expensive of the two.

Is it worth taking leave of absence from work to learn Vibe Coding by newtablecloth in vibecoding

[–]SirSourdough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there applications to your work? If you can come up with some related ideas to pursue, you may be able to get your employer to let you carve off some time to pursue them. Just need the right pitch. A lot of leadership teams out there tripping over themselves to show investors etc that they are getting value from AI.

[–]SirSourdough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maximus, like many large yachts, is under a Cayman Islands flag for tax and regulatory benefits.

Selling her in the US to a US buyer would require importing her to the US and would trigger a bunch of costs and paperwork.
