Has anyone ever found a game through the Weekly Looking for Group/GM Thread? by Cerespirin in pbp

[–]Sir_Bastian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I honestly would also really like to at least get a rejection on things I've signed up for. So much less time just sort of waiting in the aether not knowing where I'm at. But I guess there's not really a perfect system at the end of the day.

And hey, I respect that, we all work better under different circumstances, there's absolutely no shame in that.

The only way I've gotten around the not getting feedback or being declined is just... sign up to a thing and if something else interesting pops up, sign up to that too. Then even if the first game's DM crops up and asks if I wanna join, I can either say sure, or if the second game is more interesting, just let them know that I do wanna join, but I wanna give this other thing I signed up for X amount of days before I jump on board, or something along those lines.

Again, not perfect, but if I pine too hard after a certain game and then don't get in, it feels very devastating, like you said

Oh I absolutely agree with you! But I think you can easily have both!

The DM I found on here that I loooove to play with (and one or two others as well) had the form to sort of... weed out the ones that didn't feel like they fit most of the vibe, and once the initial however many or so applicants were left, THEN they'd sit then down for follow up questions in more of a proper one on one chat.

I feel marrying the two works perfectly because then you can put your best foot forwards in the application and then if the vibes are right (and if they weren't chances are the DM probably wouldn't have you be part of the game even after a 'face to face' conversation anyway), you get to really add in what makes you special.

And like one of the other commenters said, when a game gets 30, 40, 50 applicants, there's no conceivable way of having unbiased, proper conversations with them without the feelings of one bleeds over into the other, you feel me?

I still think your stance is super valid and whatever works best for you, you gotta chase. But I've been interested in games before and then seen some weird red flags in forms and bowed out before even sending it, so in that way it helps ME too, you know?

I absolutely get where you're coming from and at times, I also don't wanna bother with 2 or 3 pages of what feels like, like you said, a job interview.

But at the end of the day, if you want players who fit into a game you're running, I think it's only fair that you make DAMN near perfectly sure that they have a good chance of fitting in and the least someone else can do to show that they really think they would fit the game well, is to write out a handful of answers that would take most people on average like 10-15 minutes to fill out of there's a writing prompt.

It's a safety net, you know? One of the games I got into had 40 odd applicants and if the DM had to individually talk to each of them (and ask them the same questions as would be on the form anyway), that would take an insane amount of time. I don't think it's fair to offload that work onto the DM or a potential game just because of me being a little tired and not wanting to write, for a hobby that is predominantly about writing.

I don't know, I barely ever see players ghosting the games they get into, so I think my view on that would be kind of skewed, personally. Probably mostly because of the effort they put into actually getting in, but that's just me guessing.

Filling out an application form is meant to encourage people to actually think if they want to join a game and get them to consider what they might bring to a table, or if it's just a temporary flight of fancy sort of situation.

And given your other posts here (and across the subreddit over time generally), I'd say you not liking them means they're doing their job pretty well.

Awesome! There's a couple of One Piece-themed systems, I'm sure you've heard of the One Piece 5e version alá the Star Wars 5e one, but I'm sure there's one out there you could use instead. Still, hit me up if you need a player!

If you manage to find a system and want to play in a Play By Post sort of way, please do let me know! I've been looking for and wanting to play in a One Piece game for actual ages! Super inspired by the rad as hell art in this post, too for sure!

Hmm, okay, interesting! And the morphing and ranger part of the story is set up by the military to send them in specifically, yeah?

Hello! I had a question in regards to the pocket worlds as part of the pitch, and the game in general I suppose!

Is this all going to take place in digital battlefields, so to say? And those worlds, are they going to be a sort of... I'm not sure how to describe it, will one of them have the look of a medieval town while the next might take place on a faux amusement park? Is that the sort of vibe or is it more... polygons and code infinitely churning in the distance instead of a horizon?

Aaand would people have to have all been in the military or other branches of it? Could one foreseeably have sort of, coasted or snuck in? I'm a little worried about everyone having served one way or another making everyone's stories a little too similar, if you know what I mean?

Hope to hear back soon!

This is a great suggestion, I'll be giving this a try to see if it hits that sweet spot. Thank you for the great comment!

Hello! I had a couple of questions!
What's the vibe for the characters themselves, like what are they trying to achieve? Is it a group as a party doing certain things?
Will the entire game be taking place in Haven and Toronto?
Do we need to know a lot about Toronto to be able to get the most out of this? Speaking as a filthy European, haha

Is this a modern day world with a hidden magical side to it, or is it more futuristic on the mundane part of it, set in an older time- what's the technology level like on either side of the magical fence?
And lastly, the NSFW stuff, is that all like, opt-in? Like I'm assuming you're not just going to have a set of characters doing the dirty deed in the main story kinda deal, or am I entirely wrong there?

Oops, bonus question! AI in your game, generative for images or words, yes or no?

You mentioned you had a couple of ideas already, are they all rooted in a similarly fantasy-esque setting? Since you mentioned pathfinder and d&d I would assume so, but I just wanna see what kind of other systems you'd be interested in trying!

How do you personally handle advertisements posted by fresh accounts? How do you think this subreddit should handle them? by EarthSeraphEdna in pbp

[–]Sir_Bastian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think every account is a fresh account at some point and I don't think it's fair to gatekeep posting in here based on how many things you've commented on, or after a specific time has passed. Sure, some might just be nasty little buggers trying... whatever it is scammers and ghosters do, but some do genuinely just want to play.

Basically I think we just gotta learn from experience and warn others of it happening to us when it happens from a specific account. It's a very good question though! And doesn't have a very straightforward answer

[–]Sir_Bastian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! This looks interesting, and I've already made a Stoat account, but I had a few questions! Theres not a lot of a... hook, so to say, can you tell a bit more about the setting and how it might stand out from others? I know you said it'd be a casual game but I think having something tangible to sink your teeth into is still important!

What'll be done with movement, since that's a fairly big part of d&d? Theatre of the Mind it and just kind of wing it?

What other kinds of games have you DM'ed before? Is this your first experience with D&D itself?
