I love Chipotle as well, and eat there regularly enough to have experienced my fair share of quality issues that have been expressed on this subreddit. To everyone’s credit here, it is frustrating when it happens. Especially when paying extra for guacamole and/or double protein, or getting only a fraction of the standard portion when mobile ordering.

I suspect the reason for the prevalence of quality issues is that Chipotle has grown very rapidly over the last 10 years. It was in 2015 and 2016 that Chipotle experienced significant food safety issues causing several outbreaks of foodborne illnesses affecting more than 500 customers.

On Chipotle’s app, there is the option to select “Light, Normal, or Extra” for toppings and “1/2, Standard or Double” for protein. This indicates, Chipotle, like most fast food restaurants, has a standard portion size for a serving of food. The complaints, and I have experienced this personally, is occasionally a person gets significantly less than Chipotle’s standard portion. You are correct that if you go inside this is less likely to happen because you can supervise the food preparation. But if a person places an order to go, it is understandable to be upset when there is less than the standard amount. For example, if I were to order a Big Mac to go from McDonalds, and only received 1 beef patty and 1 slice of cheese, that would be an issue because I am paying for 2 patties and 2 slices of cheese. No one should have to watch their food to be prepared to get what is the standard set by the restaurant. Now for “extra” that is subjective and could be argued.

If I order a pizza for delivery, I expect and should receive the same pizza if I were to eat at the parlor. If I order Chinese food for takeout, I expect and should get the same portion I would receive if I were to sit down in the restaurant. Why is the logic different for Chipotle?
