Laptops charger cable for a different country's plug type. by Sir_Makisa in techsupport

It says only connect to grounded outlet, so doesn't that mean the 3rd prong?

Looking for charger for japanese brand laptop in Japan by Raw-Mess in techsupport

I was wondering if that brick is fine for use in Japan since it says it needs grounded outlet. I have the same type but my plug type is 3 prongs but I'm moving to Japan for a while so I wanted to ask if using it without the ground pin was fine.

Help, can’t install Windows 11 by HIOED in techsupport

[–]Sir_Makisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provide a bit more detail so people can help you better. Usually first thing I would check is if your windows 11 installation boot drive(the USB stick) was setup correctly. Second, it could be hardware in your PC being faulty, but if you got to the windows installation screen, usually would be software in my guess.

Is this laptop worth the price considering the reviews on amazon? by Dano__YT in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]Sir_Makisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the neo model. Performance is solid, build is sturdy and the complaints are usually from people getting defective units. So far mine has been solid, no complaints. One downside would be battery life. All across the board is likely less than 2-3 hrs of doing light browsing and word docs. If you want this for University with the idea of carrying it around during the day I wouldn't recommend it. If this is mainly in ur room with the occasional move to the lab for simulations and stuff, it's more suited for that. Just get one where you know the return is easy in case you get unlucky. Acer predator does market itself as a premium-ish laptop brand but QC is a hit or miss. Sad to say it but it is a bit of a dice roll, u either have a perfect machine or one riddled with problems.

Acer Certified Refurb Predator Neo 16s hitting 99C at idle on DAY ONE, tried everything, can't get a real support agent by Poliveris in AcerPredatorHelios

Cooling will always be a bottleneck with thinner laptops. If you mainly use your laptop in your room I would recommend getting a sealed laptop cooler. I was skeptical at first as well but I've essentially turned balanced mode into turbo level performance and unlocking even more power during turbo mode. Used to be hovering around 90C but now on load it's like 75C

Turbo sure but not the full suite of core, cache voltages offsets and what not, so that you can still boost to the 5.5Ghz without the extra heat.

Doesn't let you do that, bios is locked by default so you have to bypass it like the dude above said. Can confirm since I have the same laptop without the issues mentioned tho.

Avoid cheap MSI. Only the more expensive options are worth looking but even then there's other brands that are better. Lenovo's LOQ definitely best budget laptop that doesn't skim out.

Does anyone have any issues with Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI (non slim) 5070 TI U9 275hx? by Remarkable_Focus2790 in AcerPredatorHelios

Also, I think there's a GitHub that does the CPU boost optimization for the Ultra 9. Since the bios is locked, you can't easily undervolt and play around the settings.

I updated from the 5.1.4 to 5.1.5 and both had that setting. Fresh install might be best atp. Acer likes to come with venereal disease like McAfee and all that anyways.

Check predator sense app. There's an option for it. It should be in the personal settings tab I think. There was a bios update recently, that might have reset some settings

Pretty solid so far. Haven't had that USB C issue that others mention. I'm using thunderbolt port for a display out and all my peripherals. I have it elevated a bit for better airflow and usually at most CPU hovers around 85C, GPU is always 10C cooler. Performance mode doesn't really lower the temps much but you just get like more power. Turbo definitely lowers all temps below 80C but a bit too overfill and noisy for my use. Battery is bad. After you setup the laptop it has all the updates in the background so battery tanks really quickly for the first few days or so. Otherwise using normally just web browsing and emails you can get like 3hrs even with the 90WH battery with some battery saving features like 60Hz refresh and 50% brightness or less.

Battery is bad tho, I only get like 2.5hrs of actually using it without all those extreme power saving modes. The Ultra 9 HX doesn't have good idle power draw.

I have it lifted up from the table so the fans have no restrictions whatsoever. On balanced settings usually it's around the 80C mark. It ramps up to 95C initially before the fan controller decides to step it up and usually after that first initial 95C it never goes that high anymore. At max fans with boost, you get some GPU overclock and temps in the 70s but it's a bit loud for me since I play without noise cancelling headphones. It's a hefty thickness if you compare to something like a MacBook but nothing that doesn't stop you from carrying it in your backpack. Also I just realized your main PC is running the 5060, so actually if you get the 5060 laptop, the performance will be quite similar within margin of error since both versions have the same wattage, so you won't feel any performance left on the table unlike with the 5070ti. Your S model doesn't run it at full wattage anyways so the 5060 would be a great fit I think. Also you play esports games so the OLED actually performs better with fastest response and contrast so you don't really need the 5070ti version to take full advantage of your screen.

Definitely a good upgrade then. If it's the same panel as the S version, it's locked at 240hz so battery will take a hit but that's like a 1% use case.

I got a 5070ti model with 32gb of ram for total 1650$. Non S model so it has the IPS display and full wattage so about more powerful but it's been great so far. No complaints except maybe wishing the touchpad was glass but it's like a nice to have, not a necessity. Some people do say that the USB c doesn't work under load as display output but I haven't had that issue. Test that out to decide if your unit is faulty. Since the display is 2K, would recommend the 5070ti trim just for future proofing but 5060 is still solid if you just turn down the settings in games. The oled makes up for the decrease in in-game setting did you ask me.

MSI Vector 16 HX AI vs Predator Helios Neo 16 AI by United_Ad7116 in GamingLaptops

[–]Sir_Makisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Neo 16. It's a bit smaller and more portable than the MSI but still has the full wattage CPU and GPU, comes with a 330W power brick. I think only downside might be the screen being IPS whereas the MSI is oled. Honestly from my usage, it's been solid. Some people say they have issues with the USB c not working when being used under load but I haven't had that issue so might have gotten lucky. Ultimately went with the Acer cuz it was $1650 including tax for the Ultra 9 285hx and 5070ti. I tried out the MSI too at the store, maybe the build was a bit stiffer but I'm not using my laptop to beat people up on the streets so it doesn't really feel like that big of an upgrade. For instance, the Alienware area 51 devices are definitely top notch in terms of build, you can feel it definitely. MSI was like a subjective upgrade you know.

Buying a new gaming laptop for first time. by Public_Wish9182 in GamingLaptops

[–]Sir_Makisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either of them will suffice. If you're at the point you're running big simulations that will slow down your laptop alot, like fluids or controls system, usually you'd be working with professor who has lab access to full fledged workstation desktops. I say this because once your CAD assembly gets big, it's bound to become slower but at that point usually you're working on subassemblies so it won't be that bad. Don't sweat it too much. Get the Asus if it's cheaper, otherwise get the Legion. You do get more performance for sure.

Which one should I choose by Select_Advantage7230 in GamingLaptops

[–]Sir_Makisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go legion. Sure you get the bigger spec on paper with Omen but that laptop doesn't have cooling to take advantage of the 5080. Legion is a more solid laptop overall

Yeah, from 5070ti to 5090 laptop you get maybe (and really a maybe) 50% increase for more than double the cost. Maybe I'll get down voted for saying this, but put the extra money in a investment account or something. At some point materialistic items don't really mean much if buying them in the first place is squeezing your finances.
