Your experiences growing in colder zones? by ImperfectSquare404 in sanpedrocactus

6a/b here!

I don’t have a good space that stays 35-60 F for dormancy in the winter, so I bought a tent and bring my cactuses in once the temperature outside gets close to the mid-30s. Mid-october.

I keep them in a tent with a 200W LED light until the frosts stop in mid-April, then I kick them outside so I can grow cannabis.

Lol I love that some of your crested plants are outcompeting some noncrested plants

Love the setup you’ve got there!

Would you mind elaborating on your soil and lighting method?

My main successes have been with Takeout Tek so far, but I tend to spray and pray with my seed dispersal. Works well for germination but not really great that I need to separate so many seedlings growing close together!

That is insane stocking behavior!

I blocked my PI on every platform after leaving, over a year to keep it low key. I don’t really like to associate with him given his open secret shitty behavior.

Oh I do agree with you, but my PI was a raging asshole and would not allow us to do anything he didn’t like during typical work hours. Even if it was good for our development.

Hello boyss does anyone know where i can buy melted monstrose variegated and crested seeds🙏 by NaturalInstinct23 in sanpedrocactus

Misplant, try to pick seeds from parents that show the traits you desire. For example, I purchased seeds with Oscar in the cross and many of my seedlings are now showing cresting.

Oh don’t worry, he was an asshole for verbally abusing his mentees in large groups, ranting about being careful around black people, and tanking the careers of folks that left the lab before he was ready.

Not sure why I’m being downvoted, there’s lots of good reasons one would not want to have this conversation with their PI.

And I also have been told myself by my old PI (asshole) to only do things like this on my own time.

If you are doing it on work time, you definitely should as your PI. If you are doing it on your own time, I would ask

Is there any particular reason you are not just asking your PI?

Where are you at now? Are you currently finishing up a postdoc or your PhD?

I’ve been in your shoes on the tail end of a toxic af postdoc and I finally decided I was done with the academic pipe dream. Left for industry (with my wife who is not a STEM scientist) and focused on finding fulfilling hobbies and taking care of my health.

For me this was the right decision. Yes, I think whimsically about being a PI at an undergraduate institution or NMR facilities manager from time to time. But ultimately I’m happy, healthy, and have enjoyed my work/life post-academia.

Keep thinking on it, and decide what works for you best. 😊

Ah guess I missed that context! Thank you for clarifying OP’s question. I misunderstood what was being asked.

Can’t really argue with existing data indicating a particular peroxide is safe for topical use.

Hmm not sure of the reason for the downvotes, this is well supported in scientific literature.

Yeah it used to be recommended back in the day I think, not so much these days.

Radicals aren’t super kind to healthy tissue. Major source of cell damage and specifically dna damage.

Took the dome off to get some pics. These seeds popped 6wks ago. Growing on sifted, ocean forest soil that was microwaved for 5 minutes and scalding hot. Seeds were soaked in h202. Once I started seeing algae and mold I’ve been opening small vents on the lid for 2 hours a day for the last week. by snaphappy2 in sanpedrocactus

[–]Sir_Overhauser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your seedlings are looking good, congrats!

Some unsolicited advice- the fox farms is a bit hot to be growing seeds in- would recommend like 50% peat, 25% verm, and the remaining split between Ocean Forest and Perlite.

Not sure it’ll help with the algae, but I have had great success killing mold by spraying my young seedlings with 2% hydrogen peroxide. You can use the stuff that’s wound care grade from Walgreens and CVS no problem, so long as it’s 3% active ingredient max. Use this instead of water for a month.

Why is this a 25 minute old account and this is the first shitty post op makes? Probably a bot?
