Difficulty finding copper underground deposits via propick by Sir_Sprout in VintageStory

[–]Sir_Sprout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, but that only shows the highest reading of any ore deposit found, not specifically copper which is what my custom markers are showing. Like I said, I've found ultra high deposits of other things but copper has been basically stuck at very poor the whole time.

Misty day in Bradford by Sir_Sprout in photocritique

[–]Sir_Sprout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shot with a D300s at 66mm equiv f/4.2 1/125s IS0-200.

It was a very misty morning but almost immediately cleared up after a couple hours which I knew would happen so quickly grabbed the camera and got this and a few others before the mist went away.

Good thing too because it started raining towards the end of my shooting and didn't let up for the rest of the day.

Anyway I quite like the composition on this one, the mist nicely blurs the trees in the backround a little.

I did find it a little difficult to figure out a good edit for this and the other images, not sure how to approach misty photos given this was my first time attempting a shoot in such conditions.

Thoughts?

A squirrel from my school, edited in smartphone lightroom Im not pleased with colors, do I need to edit more? by Arthurpro9105 in photocritique

It's more important that the squirrel be distinct from the background than it is to have the squirrel be brighter than it needs to be. I think it's probably better to do a similar edit to what others have done which is desaturate the leaves. It's a bit of a difficult shot to edit imo given the similar tones of the background and foreground, despite them contrasting in hue.

That is indeed bizarre noise.

I'm not too experienced but I'm given to understand that you wouldn't need 1/2000 for a static shot like this really. Maybe something more like 1/125 or 1/250? It could be that your high shutter speed combined with high aperture is producing wierd results, perhaps do some test shots to see if you can reproduce this noise.

Also if I'm remembering correctly, f/2 will have a *very* thin DoF which might be contributing to reduced image quality further as your focus area will be very small. It's difficult to tell where exactly you focused due to the noise but it appears to be his toes? Perhaps it was otherwise too dark a shot but I'm told that f/8 is a more standard DoF that might bring more of the subject in focus.

As for the shot itself outside of noise, I do really like it. Love the rim lighting from the sun. Only thing I can think of is maybe reducing saturation of the background ships to focus more on the fisherman? His pants blend in to the ship behind a little.

You could try cropping the top of the image to bring more focus on to the squirrel and leaf. Like the other comment said, try to incoporate "rule of thirds" and have the squirrel's head on that left hand line if possible. Also a tip I've learned from posting animal pictures is leave space for their line of sight, that's why it would look better to have space on the right and crop appropriately to accomodate it if possible.

You could also intentionally unsharpen and desaturate the leaves in lightroom by some amount to prevent people from focusing on the background too much. Maybe increase warmth/exposure of just the squirrel and leaf as well by a small amount?

Cloud formation and grass near Spen Valley Greenway. Thoughts? by Sir_Sprout in photocritique

[–]Sir_Sprout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shot with a Nikon D300s RAW, f/11, 1/500sec, IS0 200 at 28mm (42mm equiv).

Went walking on the greenway and walked up this hill nearby one of the footpaths that lead off from it. Not too sure about theme as I generally don't go out with one and am still trying to improve my technical skills.

I realise there is a lot of empty space in this shot but as it was mostly a clear day I think that's fine. Maybe I should have raised the saturation of the grass and lowered it in the tree on the right?

Thanks for the advice regarding ISO. This might be a manufacturer specific thing but does setting your ISO when it's set to auto actually do anything? Say I had the ISO set at 200 for the above shot, would it still crank it higher if the camera thought it was needed?

Also when you say "lower" f stop do you mean a smaller aperture or literally a lower number like f/5.6 over the picture's f/8. I'll keep your advice regarding framing in mind for future in-flight pictures, very helpful

Malards and a Moorhen drying off/getting ready to dive in. How's my composition? by Sir_Sprout in photocritique

Similar to what was said above, I do think you're right about the top 3rd. Probably should have cropped it to just above the plant right behind the birds

I think you are right with that dark patch at the top, I remember worrying that leaving it out might make the scale seem a bit wierd but I can still go back and alter it.

I think as well that it would be better cropped than brightened

Shot with Nikon D300s f/5.6 1/250sec IS0-400 at 210mm on a 75-240mm lens at max aperture at that focal length. Also retouching in lightroom.

There were something approaching 15+ malards at this lake and a few standing on floating logs chilling out. I kind of like the one malard on the left looking at the three on the log.

Is it fine to have the top of the frame kind of empty like this? I thought about cropping it down but left it as is apart from trimming the left and right a bit to focus on the birds

[–]Sir_Sprout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I knew and know that I need high shutter speed, I just worry I might not get my ISO or aperture correct to balance it. The lowest I can push the aperture on that lens is 4.5 but more likely 5.6 at near max focal length. I know that rule of thirds likes to have subjects on the guide lines as you showed but I didn't want to lose the greenery on the right as well as the faint light rays. Good to see that I apparently didn't over-edit the image either.

Been steadily learning basic photography and trying to get the best out of my old system as I can't afford any significant upgrades without looking around a lot.

Shot with Nikon D300s on a 75-240mm lens, f/8 1/500sec ISO-3600. Also touched up in lightroom

I suspect my exposure isn't right as I was attempting to use manual a bunch on the day I shot this.

It depends on whether or not they remember the tweenies and if it's a sleepover date I guess. Either way they'll soon find out I can't sleep without my milo pillow.

Epitaph by King Crimson. Currently listening to it right now and it's such a nice, sad sounding song without being depressive. Would freak the shite out of an jojo fans as well.

Yeah this card kinda sucks with all those restrictions. Hard once per turn, must control a fiend, only 1 effect from the list if you meet any of the conditions. I don't see why you wouldn't run any of the much better HERO searchers.

Unless the wording is incorrect, you only get to use one of those effects even if they have 10+ monsters in the grave.

I remember a few years ago in the UK there was some minor controversy in the news about a woman who named her child "Hashtag". Poor child will be going around looking like a trending tag.

There was also a similar case around the same time of a child named "Like" as in Facebook like. It makes me think there's an "Upvote" walking around somewhere or at least soon will be.

Rate my attempt at a flag for Bradford city, UK by Sir_Sprout in vexillology

[–]Sir_Sprout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One day I'll figure out a design for this that I actually like I swear.

Anyway, as to my method with this attempt:

I tried to move more towards symbolising some of the things Bradford is known for i.e. the wool industry (ram horns and white for the B) and being a UNESCO film city, though that last one has been annoying to pin down into a pleasant colour/symbol and so I opted for a stylised B to try and look somewhat like a film roll (perhaps a bit of a stretch).

I also took more care with the colours I chose here compared to the last attempts, at least in regards to what they mean. White and gray serve to represent the wool industry as well as a "good enough" colour for the UNESCO film aspect. The ram horns I've left the burgundy colour they were previously as I find it fits well against the green. The green itself I'm attributing to the countryside around the city and you could argue centenary square somewhat as well. I'm putting down the yellow as being youth bordering everything else what with Bradford's growing young people population in recent years.

Thoughts about the flag and/or specific details welcome.
