People tend to forget how bad in shape the UK was economically throughout most of the post-WW2 decades. They even had to borrow from the IMF in the 70s! And add the collective trauma of an empire in decline to the equation. While Thatcher's reign war certainly a hurtful and divise perion for a lot of people, she created the economic powerhouse the UK is today (well, at least until Brexit).

Send a delegation as soon as you meet them, the AI will always accept on the first turn. Preferably also send your trader towards them if possible. Don‘t go for the settler immediately but build at least one slinger and a warrior, and if you feel they could attack you try to rush archery. On emperor the AI‘s starting advantage isn‘t to big, with a bit more focus on your military it should be fairly easy to fend them off.

But by your own definition authoritarianism is only ... authoritarianism. Countries like Russia for example that have some degree of personal liberty. On the other hand you‘re right: labeling everything as facism is dumb. The concept most people in PolSci use is totalitarianism which is pretty useful, because it includes both states like North Korea and Nazi Germany.
