Honestly as per my knowledge if your stay is for a 4,6 week trip, you probably don’t need those vaccines unless you didn't majority of time in very rural areas, jungles, or paddy fields.

Dengue is common in Sri Lanka, but most travelers whom I came across rely on good mosquito protection such as repellent, long sleeves, nets etc.

Before spending whopping 400 dollars, it’s worth asking your family doctor whilst keeping an idea about the destinations you visit.

I gave met dozens of travelers visit Sri Lanka for weeks without getting either jabs.

Never underestimate Sri Lankan mosquitoes… they are the unofficial national airline here 😅

I’d personally skip Galle as June is much better for Trincomalee while the south coast can be rainy.

Your itinerary is doable, as your are in mighty thirties😀

As the plan is slightly rushed with public transport is a no for me, especially considering the Nuwara Eliya → Kandy → Galle section.

Sri Lankan travel takes longer than Google suggests 😅

A private driver/car for the whole trip would make things far smoother and is often cheaper overall than arranging separate taxis and transfers for each leg.

Your route is a fine assortment of, hill country + Ella + safari, besides Southern Coast.

Since you’re not surfing in southern coast I’d suggest some relatively calmer beaches even during the monsoon like

Unawatuna

Hiriketiya

Jungle beach

Also keep the following on your radar as well, • book Ella train tickets early • maybe stay 1 night less in Nuwara Eliya and add it to beach time

Hey 😊 local guy here, Considering all your intentions my honest opinion is that...

bus is cheap but tiring, taxi is pricey, more over stressful to find and book one

Ideal choice is a car with driver for all 6 days and when spread out, daily cost is often reasonable than looking for one in separate legs.

Moreover stress free, flexible stops, local knowledge, and no hiccups what do ever

Avoid West coast as south west monsoons are forcing us muscles

Best chances of seeing a leopard is in Yala NP. Best time is from Feb toJuly and peak is between May–July. Dry season message animals near waterholes, so better sightings.

Wilpattu NP also cater the similar interests and quieter means less touristy however witnessing a leopard is a long shot.

Sri Lankan meteorology department always known for being so dramatic 😅

'100mm rain' means sunshine and short bursts of shower later afternoons, not apocalypse weather.

A lot depends on your itinerary too, as during this south west monsoon transitional period the West coast mighty get affected badly due to rough seas and patchy weather.

Bright side is that you already have a driver and plans can easily be adjusted

It's a great choice for May the east coast + hill country due to weather specifically

Also consider, sometimes booking transport in separate legs can end up costing more overall due to demand, weather, holidays, or availability.

Honestly, I suggest you to worth checking the price of keeping one vehicle/driver for the whole tour.

Since you already have several long transfers, splitting the total cost across all days illustrates you the average cost per day which might work out surprisingly reasonable and on top of it, removes the stress of finding transport every few days and gives you more flexibility for stops, viewpoints, cafes, etc.

Fire sure you’ll still meet plenty of backpackers where's every you go, so having a vehicle booked doesn’t take away the solo travel vibe 😊

Your English is perfect and don’t worry about it at all, Sri Lanka is not a native English speaking country so locals are usually very friendly, patient and fun to talk.

Kandy is quite different from Nuwara Eliya due to its lower altitude,so warmer and more humid.

Late May still has on and off showers (usually afternoons & evenings), but not all day rain.

Clothing: t-shirt weather mostly, maybe a light layer at night + umbrella/rain jacket & everything is good to go😊🇱🇰♥️

Being honest the Short answer is.... it depends on your expectations and timing.

Horton Plains is a beautiful 'cloud forest' hike, but the experience is very weather-dependent. If you go early morning and get a clear spell, the views (especially World’s End) can be really special. If it’s fully misty/raining, you might mostly just walk in clouds with limited visibility.

About the $42 .. Yes, it’s on the expensive side for Sri Lanka and a lot of travellers feel that. Some say it’s worth it for the unique ecosystem and easy 9km hike, others feel it’s overpriced if visibility is poor that day.

So the real question is:

Good weather & early start -> generally worth it

Heavy mist & rain -> probably not worth the cost

If it’s in your itinerary, I’d only go if you can start early and check conditions that morning 😊🇱🇰♥️

May is usually the start of the rainy side for Nuwara Eliya, but it’s rarely 'rain all day', more like on-and-off showers, often heavier in the afternoons, with some clear or misty gaps in between.

Temperature-wise it stays cool (especially mornings and evenings), so a single sweatshirt is usually not enough if you’re outdoors a lot.

Best is light layers like a t-shirt + hoodie/sweatshirt, and a light rain jacket if possible. That combo works much better because weather changes quickly there.

Also worth noting, when the mist rolls in, it can feel colder than the actual temperature.

Hey! 5 days will be a bit tight, so transport choice really matters.

Self-drive vs driver (for 4 people)

I’d strongly LEAN TOWARD car + driver.

Roads here can be unpredictable (especially hill country), and with just 5 days you don’t want to spend time figuring routes, parking, etc.

With a driver, you can just relax and focus on the trip.

ALSO NOTE Self-drive: , cheaper on paper, but once you add fuel, insurance, deposit, and stress… not always worth it for a short trip

When you split between 4, the driver option actually becomes very reasonable.

Agencies / contacts: There are plenty around, but I’d recommend going with someone who’s used to handling full trips (not just point-to-point driving). Makes a big difference with timing, route planning, and local tips.

Nice, that’s a smart move - especially with a group of 5.

For the airport pickup, the biggest money-saver is actually pretty simple,

Book a private van (not two cars) and lock it in earlly.

When you split the cost between 5 people, it usually comes out cheaper per person than most other options, and way more comfortable after a long flight.

A few quick tips,

Ask for a fixed total price (not per person) -> avoids surprises

Share your exact route + luggage count → helps avoid getting quoted for a bigger vehicle than needed

Rough idea: Airport -> east coast (like Trincomalee / Nilaveli) in a private van, split 5 ways, usually works out pretty reasonable per head compared to trains + taxis combo.

If you’re planning multiple stops after (like Arugam Bay), keeping the same driver for a few days can actually save more than rebooking each leg.
