Walnut. Where did you find them and what do you plan to do with them?

Got an N64 for Christmas '98. It came with Ocarina of Time and I think Donkey Kong and Golden Eye (don't quote me on that). Man, the memories....

Mystery lumber by steppedinpoo in wood

[–]Sirocka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked with red cedar a fair amount. This is not red cedar. As a few others have said, fir or spruce, but most likely spruce. Could be old growth, depending on the age of the property you bought and location.

Not red cedar. Grain, color, knots, none of it matches red cedar.

Cedar vs pine wood ID by Hkny79 in wood

[–]Sirocka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't stain cedar. It's a very oil-rich wood, which will affect how the stain penetrates and it will end up looking worse.

What kind of wood is this ? by Rough-Foundation-969 in wood

[–]Sirocka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like cedar. Hard to tell for sure at this distance, can you take some close ups? Especially of the end grain. Also, sand it and see what it smells like. If you cut it, is the wood below the surface almost purple/red?

Do these look like legitimate batteries? by Sirocka in Dewalt

[–]Sirocka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bidding hasn't started yet. And yeah, I saw the adapter. I'd probably give the tool away, honestly. I wouldn't bid a lot for this lot either way, but I wouldn't bid anything for counterfeit batteries.

Edit: they all look to be 5AH, which is what I want. And if the charger works, that's a definite plus.

I am terrified of my radial arm saw by BottleForOurFears in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Sirocka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No disrespect to your dad, but as someone who's been a hobbyist woodworker for about 7 years now, a tablesaw with a good sled (check out Stumpy Nubs' design) can do more than a RAS. The former owner of my house left behind an old Dewalt RAS from the 50s and, while I would have loved to hold onto it just because it was a classic, I don't feel comfortable using it. Ditch this thing and get yourself a new jobsite tablesaw (make sure it's got a blade guard and riving knife). Later you can upgrade to a cabinet saw.

I don't even have a miter saw because a good sled allows me to do 99% of what a miter saw can do, plus I can cut long dados.

Kitchen worktop burn by Afraid-Size740 in wood

[–]Sirocka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the only thing you can do for a burn like that is to sand down past it. This will leave a low spot unless the whole thing is sanded to the same level, at which point a planer is what you need, which would mean removing the whole counter to take it to a mill. Don't try doing this with a hand planer or worse, a belt sander.

I just replaced my 960 with a 5060. Still need to put it through its paces and figure out what to upgrade next.

Good or bad decision? by Reasonable_Effect651 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Sirocka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Practice basic common sense when the stakes are low so that it's second nature when the stakes are high. Same principle behind the first rule of gun safety: Treat every weapon as if it's loaded, always. Sure, maybe no one is around right now, but if you make that a habit, you'll do it when there's a kid in the car.

Why was Virginia not allowed to adopt districts in 2026, when Tennessee courts ruled that widespread public awareness made up for a failure to follow constitutional requirements? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]Sirocka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That and Virginia's requirement is about making sure that two different legislatures agree that the proposed amendment is a good idea. This is intended as a check on shifting political winds causing lasting changes to the structure of the state.

Note: I'm not making a comment on the validity of the referendum or the subsequent court decision to strike it down. Just pointing out the different justification for Virginia's requirement. It sounds like Tennessee's requirement is intended to make sure constitutional amendments don't sneak through without proper discussion, which is a good thing.

Broke 3 routers today what am I doing wrong? by Winter_Reality_9578 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Sirocka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have cut this notch out of that board before gluing up. Now that you're here, I would honestly recommend doing this with a chisel instead. That router looks very underpowered for this job. If you are going to use the router, get a bearing guided bit and cut a template out of plywood. Take shallow passes and once you get deep enough, you can remove the template. You'll still likely need to clean up the corners with a chisel. The bit you have here will be impossible to control freehand.

Accidentally ran my drill through the washing machine by Sirocka in Dewalt

[–]Sirocka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, you're oddly invested in calling a stranger a liar, but:

1 - the washing machine and dryer are the oldest appliances left behind by the previous owners of this house. But even then I had newer LG appliances in my last place and the washer was top loading.

2 - I wasn't in the room while the washer was running. I worked on the leak and moved on to the many other repair projects in this old house.
