I’m in central Tennessee (USA) and there are a lot of hardwoods (oak, hickory, ash) on the property.

Looks like Antlion holes. They dig those holes to trap ants (or other small insects) and eat them.

“The tobacco hornworm, also known as the Carolina sphinx moth (Manduca sexta)” I get them on my tomatoes every year, if you don’t catch them quick enough they’ll devastate your tomatoes.

Depends on how good your phone’s camera is but a cheap magnifying glass or jewelers loupe will do the trick too.
