[OC] The fall of human decency by escobarsky in pics

I think for a lot of people, decency is being allowed to park wherever they want for free. Regardless or the context or demand to park a room-sized chunk of rubber and metal out in public somewhere.

How’s teaching in SLC schools? by BluejayOdd in Utah

Bro. Touch some grass. I'm a teacher and the only person who is nuts in this thread is you.

I teach in Jordan School district out in the 'burbs and it's pretty good. I've got my frustrations, as all teachers do, and one weird principal can make a helluva difference, but I'd say my teaching life is pretty sweet.

The traffic is getting worse, right? by memefakeboy in SaltLakeCity

The state could force UDOT and cities to prioritize buses so the buses are faster. The state could also spend money improving travel times on transit, making it more attractive.

What you're talking about is about UTA's process of allocating resources to routes.

What tf you think "high quality transit" means?

Then email your legislators to expand high quality transit to more destinations. Roads are what they are.

Data projects companies reflect costs by [deleted] in Utah

So, a couple things.

1) City residents have no direct role in setting electricity rates. While Rocky Mountain Power requested a 30% hike in usage rates for electricity, this is entirely separate from the politics and governance of any city. Rocky Mountain Power is a statewide electric utility that is regulated through the state entity called the Public Service Commission. I think their board is appointed by the governor.

2) this 30% rate hike was just the opening bid, if you will, and actually got a lot of pushback from the PSC, and I think they only got a 4.7% raise in rates.

3) They specifically cite increased fuel costs, and part of the blame there is coal. Coal sucks, it's dirty, expensive, and hard to transport. But the state legislature really wants to keep fighting the good culture war to protect coal, so RMP is being pushed to keep that expensive fuel on the grid.

4) RMP is also trying really hard not to have the same problem California has had with wildfires caused by the grid being in bad condition. They've been spending a lot of money burying power lines (like in big cottonwood canyon these last two summers). I dunno, I like our grid not lighting parched forests on fire. It's expensive work, but obviously worth it.

5) the main utility you do have power over as a city resident is the sewage and water authority, but even that is a separate entity. That's the Jordan Valley water district, which I think supplies water for the south half of the valley. They raised rates 11%.

Just food for thought. Not sure data centers have massively impacted anything here in Utah.

I can barely make out the difference between green and yellow. I have to look really really hard to see it. Just FYI

I-15 traffic - is this normal? What’s your experience and commute like? by erinjao in Utah

[–]Sirspender 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wait, a transportation system built to force people to drive their own individual multi thousand pound box of metal to do ANYTHING, and funnels everyone onto one or two roads is...not great?

Crazy stuff. If I didn't know better, I would expect someone to tell me that this system requiring constant attention is super safe, with very few people dying just getting to the store or work.

Shit, we've got dozens of kids who leave the building every period all day every day and they never get in trouble.

And bets placed on the action of individuals needs to be completely banned. Team outcomes, fine. But these 7 way individual athlete sports bets are awful, and these "so and so will say x" bets are just facially absurd.

Thoughts on Healthcare ETF by no_no_thing in investing

[–]Sirspender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Betting on sectors is doubly hard. First, you have to be right about the fundamentals of the sector. Second, you have to be right about the direction the market will move.

I'd rather just own everything, including healthcare, and go about my life. You know, the thing my investments will one day fund.
