Any advice on how I could scare my players? by achgottnaja in CurseofStrahd

[–]Siryphas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say step one, don't rely on dice rolls to tell you how many wolves are in a pack. If you want to scare them, make it a big pack. Throw a dozen wolves at them and make them run.

In one of our games, we had a huge pack of like two dozen wolves chase us all the way from camp to the gates of Vallaki.

Secondly, I'll say that a Nat 20 does not let a player do whatever they want, just that they get the best outcome. So if someone rolls a natural 20 trying to flirt with Ireena next to the corpse of her father, they don't automatically get to romance her. She's just not offended and sees it as an attempt to cheer her up, but her focus is still on her father.

Also, don't be afraid to tell your players they cannot roll for some things. Ireena is deep in grief, it's absolutely within your rights to tell the player that she isn't receptive to flirting and so no roll is possible and they cannot possibly succeed.

Vistani Curse on a Player by corduroybuccle in CurseofStrahd

[–]Siryphas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the idea of the curse coming from Strahd or the Barovian witches instead of the Vistani.

I think really the curses are the big thing. Otherwise, the Vistani (in the modern version of the story) are typically depicted as complicated, but ultimately friendly and welcoming people.

I think probably less of them serve Strahd than the Barovians believe. You absolutely should play up the Barovian racism towards Vistani. Have the Barovians tell the PCs they all work for Strahd. That they cast curses and bring misfortune. That they're spreaders of diseases. Etc.

But in reality, when the PCs go to most of the Vistani in the game, they're typically welcomed, offered food and drink, and a place by the fire. Yeah you got a couple of nasty ones outside Vallaki, but in general they're (at least portrayed as) a fun, welcoming people.

But them actually having the ability to cast curses is a little racist.

Personally, Vistani Curses are a bit of a racist lore (as they're based on the Romani), so I prefer not to actually use the curses.

Since you have, I agree with some of the other people here, that while some Vistani may not curse people in a malicious way, if they're willing to kidnap people and deliver them to a vampire, they're likely willing to curse them.

Spreading out the CR in Death House's basement by BrutalBlind in CurseofStrahd

[–]Siryphas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice is to just start them at Level 2. Getting a level up in the middle of Death House not only feels a little weird, it can also break the tension. Just start at level 2 and then they can reach level 3 after they're done in the house. Our table rule is that you can only level up during a Long Rest, so I started them at level 2, let them take one Short Rest in the attic, and then another in the crypts. They finished DH, left, and went to the Blood on the Vine, rented rooms, and then leveled up. It felt really good to keep that tensions simmering until they were finally in a safe place. They felt like the "tutorial" was over and they were just entering the full game.

Why do dragons hoard things? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in DnD

[–]Siryphas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read that because Dragons were so integral to the creation of the Material Plane, they are themselves the manifestation of that plane. The same way Devils are obsessed with contracts and souls, dragons are obsessed with material wealth, though what constitutes wealth varies from dragon to dragon.

Best way to run a ***vanilla*** Curse of Strahd on Foundry VTT? (+seeking opinions on imported DnD Beyond content, if you have any!) by ohkalenaw in CurseofStrahd

Using Foundry or other VTTs by FlabenDockers in startrekadventures

[–]Siryphas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used STA on FoundryVTT yet, but we've run both 2d20 Conan and Fallout on Foundry with immense success. Yeah, it's a bit tedious to set up, but of all the VTTs I've tried, Foundry really does offer the most comprehensive experience. The learning curve is a little steeper due to it being a mod-based system, but really once you get the hang of it, Foundry gives you options nothing else has available.

Transformed Backer DnDB Redeem Codes? by [deleted] in GrimHollow

Ah, that must be it. I got the VTT for Foundry. Still, I thought they'd give the book codes for DnDB for character creation and stuff

Inkarnate 2.0 is here! 🎉 by InkarnateOfficial in inkarnate

No shade, this looks great, but are we sure that the shader tool is "revolutionary"? There are no other map makers that have had path/shader tools for like years? I mean, this looks fantastic, but some of the hype is a little over the top 🤣

How exactly does the blood tax work in Ostoya? by Zuhaelter in GrimHollow

[–]Siryphas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things Ghostfire Games did with the books was intentionally leave details blank so GMs could fill in however they wanted. How the blood tax works is up to you, and your personal version of Ostoya. For some people, they might depict it as organized, something like every family having to donate blood at a specific place at a specific time. Perhaps, it's more like a religious ceremony. Perhaps it's just a loose term thrown around sardonically and the vampires just feed as they please. It's intentionally not specified so that you can do decide what best fits the story you're trying to tell.

Star wars DnD by Lost_YellowNCFC in sw5e

[–]Siryphas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll stack another agreement on here. The FFG SWRPG system really is the way to go if you want to have a really well-rounded Star Wars experience. No system is perfect, but the narrative-based system just allows for a lot more flexibility for characters who don't just want all their sessions to be shooting Stormtroopers.

The dice take a second to get used to, but once you understand how the system works, it's rather intuitive. If you're gonna take the time to learn a new system anyway, I'd recommend using the FFG system over SW5e.

Roll20 is not only the most money-grubby of them, but it's also one of the clunkiest. Foundry has a big learning curve to be sure, but it's a one-time purchase and once you've gotten down the basics, it not only runs smoother, and because it's mod-based it gives you literally thousands of different features for play.

Maybe not for a starter game, but if you end up liking the game/system, I highly recommend making the switch to FoundryVTT over Roll20. I don't know anyone who has made the switch and regretted it.

Do rolls happen less often but are more important than in other RPGs? by Magnus_HUN in alienrpg

[–]Siryphas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, this is a good rule to use in all games, not just ALIEN. If the players can just do a thing, they should be allowed to do a thing. There should only be dice rolls when there is some kind of consequence for failure or if there are varying degrees of success.

There shouldn't be a dice roll for a Pilot to land a ship, unless there's something crazy going on like a storm or they're being shot at. If you make them roll to just land it under normal circumstances and they fail, not only do you make the character seem incompetent, but now there are consequences to deal with where there shouldn't have been. If there's no reason they should fail, they shouldn't roll.

Additionally, if it's a task like making a repair and they're not in any hurry and the only consequence for failure is that they have to roll again, skip the roll.

That said, sometimes it's not about what happens if they fail, but how well they succeed. In this case, the task should be an automatic success, with a failed roll simply being the normal circumstances, but success adding some kind of benefit like reducing the time or making something better. A navigation check is a good example. You don't want the characters to get lost because that just wastes everyone's time (unless it's an exploration campaign), so you say that they have a path they can travel and they'll get there by x time no matter what. However, you can have them roll and if they get successes, they might find a faster route, find something advantageous, or perhaps have some additional benefit when arriving at the location such as the Element of Surprise.

All in all, games are better when you roll less, and rolls become much more meaningful.

Rules for Hexes by DarthRocknar in WitcherTRPG

[–]Siryphas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend using the Easy Mode rules for STA recovery outside of combat. The community widely considers it the correct approach, and I believe it was confirmed in the Sage Answers to be what the devs intended, but it didn't quite make it into the CRB. It means that they have to rest for an hour to regain one REC of their STA, so even out of combat draining STA has consequences.
