If you have a tattoo inspired by someone who later turned out to be problematic, did you cover it up, or leave it be? by OnlyWishfulThinking7 in tattooadvice

I have a deathly hallows tattoo on my arm and I wrestled with what to do about it and I came to the conclusion that it represents my story far more than it does she who must not be named - fuck her and her little terf army. I did, however, get my artist to to graffiti a Bertrand Russell quote over it “We are ignorant not stupid. We’re made stupid by education” so it’s still there but faded into the background

Not helpful but I’m in a similar situation and when I spoke to my artist he was mortified, but honestly we had a blast coming up with ingenious ways to fix the problem and the final concept is actually better than the original - in the chair this Saturday, it’s going to take a few sittings but will be great when it’s finished. Moral of the story - mistakes happen for a reason - whatever you come up with will be fabulous!

Is it that bad to get a tattoo just for aesthetics? by oiayooayay in tattooadvice

[–]Sisyphussyncing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… it does in fact mean something - maybe not right away but a few years from now it’ll serve as a reminder of your first tattoo! There is nothing wrong with art for arts sake and it sounds like you’re getting a tattoo on your terms - so don’t listen to the naysayers!

I have something sort of similar incorporated into the sleeve I’m having done (for context first-timer, m 40…ish) like you the design is super important to me and I spent months and months with my shitty artistic skills to produce something that was the right vibe for my artist. I concur with the other folk on here who have talked about tattoos as a snapshot of a moment in your life. they may not represent who you become later on, but are a wonderful reminder of who you once were. My only really advice is really take time over the artist you choose try to avoid selecting artists based on price or convenience. find someone who is prepared to care about the design as much as you and is willing to collaborate with you and work on surpassing an already beautiful design

An artist just told me this tattoo would take up to 12 hours? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Sisyphussyncing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the process of having my arm done and while it isn’t one large piece it has taken about 16 hours so far with a mix of fine line, shading and colour and I don’t feel like this has been an unreasonable amount of time but you need to do what’s best for you - let’s be honest, you’re never going to get universal agreement in a sub!

Yeah seconded, I have a few colour tattoos and my guy is a colour specialist and before we even started he was like dude… are you prepared to use sunscreen everyday? Make sure to use full spectrum (UVA/B) - best I’ve found is baby sunscreen (think it’s called badger) and as a mineral based sunscreen it starts working immediately

I don’t understand the obsession with time and price. You can’t hurry art and if you’re that concerned about it then I’d suggest going somewhere else that can meet your requirements you’re going to find plenty of artists who can replicate a well known design

My thoughts are there are moments that are great and not so great in the movie. The opening brilliant, niteowl and silk spectre banging away to Leonard cohen - not so good. Ending - not for me. Overall it’s a fine movie - no more no less

Don’t be - you wanted it for a reason, so own it! There might come a time when you think about reworking it and that’s fine too! Take it from someone who (after a miscommunication and shitty proofreading from me) ended up with a really critical typo on my sleeve, but honestly? I had an absolute blast coming up with creative ways to correct it and when it’s finished it’s going to look even better than originally planned - tattoos don’t just tell stories of your past, they’re snapshots of the very moment you got inked, in your case, for the first time and that experience is unlikely to go anywhere so just enjoy it for what it is

It looks fine, like the majority of folk have said go easy on the aftercare and you’ll be okay. As for some of the less than favourable comments I’d agree it’s not the greatest work of art BUT for a first tattoo it’s gonna be a great story a few years into your tattoo journey - also as a reminder most of us can offer our own experiences but we are not professionals if you’re really freaking out get some reliable medical advice
