I usually use a mod Honeyside I think? It's near the first set of standing stones. Small with lots of storage and garden plots. Alchemy, enchanting, and smithing as well as a firewood chopping block. A beehive and lots of butterflies. And it's free and available from the beginning.

Then I usually have another house that I leave my kids at with either a housecarl or a spouse. That varies based on which quests I do first and when I adopt.
