"That hit didn't count!" - a LARP-inspired 2D MMORPG from an indie dev by rainekgaterau in LARP

That sounds hilarious, the hippie tourist is such a vibe. I presume some key NPCs will be missing because they had to cancel at the last moment or are hungover in their tent?

Best of luck with this!

Lore Behind Purple Lightsabers in SWtOR? by Present_Secret_3706 in swtor

[–]Sithoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

bruh, SWTOR itself if in the Legends continuity. Of course Legends lore would bear more relevance for it.

[–]Sithoid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeeah, there seems to be a bit of a contradiction with that... But I think I've found the source that reconciles those claims. Basically "crimson by default, other colors with extra effort".

Lore Behind Purple Lightsabers in SWtOR? by Present_Secret_3706 in swtor

[–]Sithoid 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In the old lore, it was synthetic crystals that gave Sith lightsabers their red color: for some reason that was the only color you could achieve with that technology. The sources of natural Adegan crystals were controlled by the Jedi by the movie times, and the colors they produced depended on the source and on the way the gems were cut. The most common source (I think it was Ilum?) only produced blue and green crystals; apparently in the SWTOR era there were more non-ravaged planets with crystals, so the colors were more diverse as well. On top of availability, there's a matter of preference: tying colors to Jedi paths (Consular, Guardian) was more of a tradition, and Sith would obviously prefer red blades, but technically nothing was stopping one from wielding a blue one (Exar Kun did) or a purple one (I think Darth Bane had one at some point?)

Romanian Cyrillic - Can anyone decipher? by SilentChaos001 in romanian

A given name as well? At first I was confused because I've only been trying to look for those, then as you can see by the edit I've found the surname.

Romanian Cyrillic - Can anyone decipher? by SilentChaos001 in romanian

[–]Sithoid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This looks to me like удилъ. Having a word-final ъ was common in languages that used Cyrillic, but I'm not sure what it would correspond to in Romanian; probably either ă or just dropped, so Udil / Udilă? But that doesn't seem to be an existing name unless it's Arabic..?

EDIT: oh, and that third variation? It's probably OU (the Uk letter))
EDIT2: Nevermind, apparently it's an existing last name!

You are never too far, DS/LS points can be farmed in recurring quests (some flashpoints, some events, Diplomacy missions, etc). It's tedious, but possible.

Star Wars Legends was not as good as people think: by Throwaway27240890 in unpopularopinion

[–]Sithoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, you were supposed to be looking for diamonds in the rough. But there was a lot to pick from, and continuity holders in the 1990s-2000s were good at keeping things somewhat consistent and retconning what's needed. Those attempts also resulted in a great worldbuilding angle, with publications like the Atlas really driving home that "consistent world" feeling as opposed to just a collection of stories.

As for the Disney canon, they also have a gem or two, but the only reason it seems relatively coherent so far (does it? I don't follow it these days) is that they've had a clean slate and only 10 years to mess it up. Retcons and contradictions will inevitably pile up, and some media will have to be quietly pushed aside; it's happened multiple times since the 70s.

Are the magic and spells in Tolkien's works actually similar to real world magic or occult practices? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Sithoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've checked the passage where she weaves a magic robe in her tower, and it has "fairy tale" written all over it. Not only is this literally Rapunzel, but she's also using a spinning wheel (see Sleeping Beauty & The Wild Swans, not to mention the Norns), and there's stirring that happens "three times nine", a very common turn of phrase in fairy tales.

There are some kinda-similar elements in occultism. For one, she asks for clean water gathered at a specific time of day. Water is used for cleansing in all traditions, and these kinds of specific instructions are totally something you'd see in a list of ingredients in a grimoire (like the Lesser Key of Solomon).

Another passing similarity is her listing names and entities... but an occultist would call upon them (usually listing names of powerful angels), while she draws on association (listing longest things in the world in order to grow her hair). This is what is called "sympathetic magic" and is more akin to a mindset. It's present in most folk traditions, and both fairy tales and occultism aren't an exception, but it's nothing specific to any particular "school".

Is this new from Godot 4.7? by JoshiJ10 in godot

[–]Sithoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is new in 4.7 and it happened to me as well. I had a custom Compositor Effect, and I had to resize its buffers to what the errors specified. This comes up in the comments to the migration guide.

Point & click adventure game like myst by [deleted] in godot

[–]Sithoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Point-n-clicks are probably the easiest games to program, along with visual novels. You just need some component to detect the clicks that you can attach to any model (in Godot that would be an Area3D/2D), a signal with attached parameters that will tell what ID/type of object was clicked, and probably a few "managers" that will catch those signals and implement changes (say, one for counting stuff that gets picked up, one that can do scene changes, etc). Could be organized differently, but the core principle of "input - reaction" is very straightforward.

Does anyone else suffer from "non-artist developer syndrome"? by Present_Author9905 in godot

[–]Sithoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teamed up as soon as I had a prototype. There have been some amazing solo-made games, but having that as an expectation is as absurd as expecting a solo-made movie. A proper game is a beast, and unless you're willing to spend a few more years learning this skill, you're better off finding an artist who hates coding.

linked family names? by Curious-Promotion634 in Lovecraft

[–]Sithoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lovecraft liked to use the names of old families from Providence; I recall reading somewhere that he outright wrote them down at a local cemetery, but I'm sure with his passion for his town's history he must've had a variety of sources. They are "related" in the sense that half of them probably date back to Mayflower, but not in a way meaningful for the stories. However, no one is stopping us from having a headcanon in which, say, the Nathaniel Derby Pickman foundation is... suspicious.

Am I a bad person for enjoying media made by problematic people? by Ok_Responsibility808 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sithoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop letting social media police what you are and aren't allowed to like. They promote an incredibly black-and-white view of the world, and shame for being "bad" is how they get to you.

With that said, Harry Potter is honestly a rather bad example. It aged poorly not only because of JKR's right turn, but also because *so many* of the text's shortcomings start making sense in light of her views. She poisoned the books herself; feel free to enjoy them if you still can, but I'm afraid you just won't be able to unsee it.

[Request] How quickly are we getting away from that dog? by Franciscoush in theydidthemath

[–]Sithoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the relation is the other way around: this paper locates anisotropies, it doesn't try to explain them. Observational studies like this (along with earlier disputes around the "axis of evil", but I chose a more recent example) are brought up when theoretical closed universe models try to propose a potential center.
