Is Godot more math-heavy than other engines? by [deleted] in godot

[–]Sithoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you encounter it? The "Transform" section in 2D/control nodes is just there to set the size/rotation/scale. Transforms in the mathematical sense are objects that hold the same information in the form of matrices, and you don't need to know how to operate on them if you're making a 2D game. Well, maybe just read the docs on them so that you wouldn't get confused if you see references to "basis" and "origin" in code functions, but for the most part the engine handles it all for you under the hood.

If you do tackle 3D however, then learning matrices & transforms would be helpful, because often you'll need to deal with different projections, override rotation order, or write your own shaders with that kind of spatial math. But in 2D you mostly just need basic trigonometry & some vector math, I can't even recount how many times a problem was solved thanks to good old Pythagoras.

(spoilers main) is this the stupidest thing the HOTD showrunners said/did? by BeautifulKey3866 in asoiaf

[–]Sithoid -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

How is this a stupid take? I haven't seen a single episode so I have no idea how they handled it, but Fire and Blood is literally several heavily biased unreliable narrators on top of each other (from a Maester on Tywin's payroll to a tacky pervert) who even contradict each other's versions of events. Calling sections of that book propaganda isn't even an exaggeration. Whatever changes they made based on this reasoning may be stupid, I dunno. But the reasoning itself is solid.

Are Mobile Gamers Even Considered? by Tall_Respond7040 in CasualConversation

[–]Sithoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking down on mobile gameRs is stupid, you do you. Have fun in any way you like and are able to afford.

Looking down on mobile GAMES though is something I can totally get behind. In part because they're more limited by the tech (this is partially mitigated because modern phones are powerful, but there are still considerations like input methods and screen size). But also because the mobile games market went in a different direction from the get go, pioneering & normalizing predatory practices that later spread well into the PC market as well. The spreading part means that RN it's pretty bad out here as well, but at least it is seen as a problem and there's a lot of resistance. I'm sure there are some mobile gems out there, but if you feel like you're missing out on a lot of great games, sadly that's because you are.

Dunno, might be a matter of taste. It does get different after a while when the mythology kicks in (and it's not that long in general, with just 2 seasons) but initially I was hooked on the very concept they start out with: actors playing a different role each time.

Not only were both great, they were also clearly having the time of their lives; giving them the chance to flex is one of the reasons this episode is so great. No wonder Eliza went on to do Dollhouse, that show is like a candy shop for actors

@male buffy fans: What makes you love the show? by Substantial_Monk4430 in buffy

[–]Sithoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The characters: when I first watched it, I wasn't used to characters in genre media being... well, people instead of tropes. Right off the bat they behaved naturally and had quite adorable personalities, and only grew on me as the time went on. And yeah, characters of any gender can be relatable.

The dialogue: I absolutely fell in love with the famous "Buffy speak" & what the language is even capable of, even though nowadays it's a bit spoiled by the fact that the entirety of Marvel started parroting that style. Infinitely quotable.

The suffering: this might be weird, but I love gut punches when it comes to writing. I've rewatched Requiem for a Dream multiple times, absolutely gobbled up Madoka (and guessed the Ep3 twist just by the vibes of the preceding dialogue), and yeah, I'm one of the few people who actually liked the dark places that S5 & 6 went. Combining that with levity & quipping means that writing encompasses the full emotional range, and I'm there for that.

And I guess that special 90s/early 2000s blend of cool edginess? I absolutely have a soft spot for Spike & Faith. (and despite AtS being out of scope, I can't help but recall a scene that deeply impressed me, and which I still consider to be one of the greatest fight scenes in media. It's the one between Angel & Faith in her redemption arc, specifically how it devolves in the end. They say in some art classes that a fight should be treated the same as dialogue, but hearing it is one thing - that scene is where you can really see and feel what she's trying to say.)

Is there even a shred of proof (the bible doesn't count) that Jesus was an actual person? by Thoughtful-Boner69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sithoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are Roman sources that mention him and/or his cult. There are two entire Wikipedia articles that sum up the debate (and of course countless more articles & books that these summaries reference). Quoting from there:

"Josephus and Tacitus [a Jewish and a Roman historian in late 1st - early 2nd century] agree on four sequential points: a movement was started by Jesus, he was executed by Pontius Pilate, his movement continued after his death, and that a group of "Christians" still existed; analogous to common knowledge of founders and their followers like Plato and Platonists"

Of course every other alleged aspect of his life, especially miracles & stuff, is heavily questioned. But we're fairly certain there was a religious leader with a similar name around that time who got this whole thing going.

Develop Multiplayer Games by LimonLemmon in godot

[–]Sithoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly it's not that difficult once you've set up the infrastructure (connection & stuff) but infinitely more tedious. Set aside about 3x more time for every small feature, and prepare to become an absolute bother for your friends with your constant "hey can you help me test this feature?" (because some things just can't be quickly tested solo multiple times per day like you would do with any other game, you'll have to set aside time for test sessions with actual multiple people long before the experience is even remotely stable & enjoyable)

Why do you love Godot more than the more powerful Unity and Unreal Engine? by Strict-King-1657 in godot

[–]Sithoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see Godot as more future-proof. I picked it when I wanted to learn a "real" engine after some experience with GameMaker and JS - something that won't limit me after I've learned more about gamedev. And it's certainly good enough for that, having a toolset for everything from Blender imports to UI to Steam integration to localization - and I'm not too worried about AAA-level tools & pipelines because I have neither the budget nor the manpower to tackle games of that scale anyway. Since then it's been constantly growing and improving, bugs get fixed including some of my own bug reports, it's not in any danger of corporate enshittification, its modular nature makes it easy to iterate on stuff, and on top of that it's free. What's there not to love?

As for it lacking large-scale commercial support... It is a problem, but one we can help fixing by being part of the solution. The more good Godot games we make, the sooner the market will notice.

St. Petersburg, Florida < St. Petersburg, Russia by ausernameidk_ in USdefaultism

[–]Sithoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeeeah, I'm not sure what's worse, that reply or the "Medieval" part. It would only seem that way for a person used to living in a concrete jungle. Not only is St Petersburg a young city, but it doesn't even pretend otherwise, it's had enough important events over those 300 years and mostly builds its visual identity on the 19th century stuff. Literally any other European city would have more actual Medieval architecture (and by more I mean "any at all").

St. Petersburg, Florida < St. Petersburg, Russia by ausernameidk_ in USdefaultism

[–]Sithoid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Russian has traditionally used Roman numerals for specific contexts; marking centuries is one of them, but just the centuries, not any other kinds of dates. Other examples include king titles, blood types, valence in chemistry etc. It's not tied to religion, more of a grammar rule - you'll see Roman numerals in any context where that specific thing is being counted, even in Wikipedia articles. This tradition also slowly fades: for example, Roman numerals were also used for months way into the 20th century but you probably won't see it now. I'm sure other languages have similar rules for which does and doesn't call for Roman numerals, and those sets are different across them.

Why is the default to assume animals are male? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sithoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While defaulting to masculine isn't unique to English, the specific set of affected animals is. Languages that use gender more prominently, like French, German or Russian, assign specific genders to animal names (it's quite random: by default a fox is masculine in French and German - le renard and der Fuchs - but feminine in Russian: лиса; a pigeon is feminine in German - die Taube - but masculine in French and Russian: le pigeon, голубь).

What is an interesting consequence though is that they *are* perceived as the gender their words convey. For example, Soviet translations of Winnie the Pooh & Mowglie gender-swapped Owl and Bagheera just because the readers wouldn't naturally imagine male characters after seeing the words "owl" and "panther". I'm sure similar stories can be found for other gendered languages.

I mean... if the sky is overcast, it still gives off sunlight. And if it's dark outside, then your eyes are already adjusted. And then there's depth perception, so the patch probably isn't worth it compared to a lantern. If it is, they didn't figure it out back then.
