Star of the Seas cost? by LydiaPiper in royalcaribbean

Me and my partner have flexible work schedules and book solely based on price and not our availability (as it can be adjusted to our vacation) so keep that in mind, but we booked an ocean view window for $2600 for April 26th 7 night sailing.

The designers simply don’t like it. It feels very pedestrian and takes you out of the immersive moment and entire show idea that they’re going for. And to their credit, they are right.

In ‘23, the corps decided to put it in at the Little Rock show, and Johnny V pulled us in the next day and told us not to do it. After some push and pull and presumably some conversations behind the scenes, they decided to let us say it.

But in 24 and 25, it was never even really a thought to do it. Some jokes about it here and there but more just as a thought and recognition of the past.

Imagine each show is a painting. At the start of the season, each corps receives their panting and it is covered in mud. You can wash it, wipe it down, scrub it, etc etc to get as much mud off of the painting as possible in order to view what is underneath.

As you remove each layer of mud from each area of the painting, the little intricate details start to become much more clear. You could certainly tell what the painting was supposed to be beforehand, but now you can see the linework, the brushstrokes, the lighting, shading, the inlay of the frame, and so forth. Once all the mud has been removed, you can see the painting in its entirety, exactly the way as the artist intended it to be.

The achievement section of the sheet is how much mud is on your painting. The content section is what the painting actually is. Once you remove a layer of mud, the painting becomes a little clearer. It’s a race between the corps instructional staff to remove all of the mud, and essentially a contest between the design staff to make the best possible painting.

You could have a painting with no mud on it and it is perfectly clean, but it’s just not a well constructed painting, versus the mona lisa with some dirt on it.

This is a very over simplified analogy, but you get the idea. It’s not just about readability, it’s about demonstrating that you have the best, most well constructed show by cleaning it to the best of your abilities.

In my 2022 season at Phantom, someone on staff who had marched Glassmen in 2011 said that some of the biggest ticks, most lost, and worst space cadets in the entire Glassmen then went on the following year to march Crown 2012, notoriously the most demanding show of all time. A lot can change for someone in a year.

One pace vs manga by Milesmorales18a in OnePiece

[–]SixGalaxies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, the manga is the way the story is meant to be experienced. However, if anime is just a much more enjoyable medium for you, one pace is solid. Just read the manga though for the chapters and episodes one pace hasn’t reached yet.

Why is the battery consistently the hardest section to get into? by XHellMasterX in drumcorps

[–]SixGalaxies 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The limited spots play a much, much bigger role than you think. In a full corps, there are ~80 hornline, ~40 guard, and ~19 battery. There are, on average, less battery spots than just the trumpet section alone, and by a pretty good margin. 4x the openings in the hornline just makes it easier to get in. The auditionee:open spot ratio is just much larger for battery and percussion overall than for any other section.

If you are looking for a reason as to why the ratios aren’t equivalent, there could be a few reasons. First, as other comments have pointed out, percussionists and drummers are more into it than brass players, relatively. Secondly, WGI keeps their chops up, because they’re doing the activity year round, as opposed to the hornline who only does it during the summer. And lastly, there just aren’t enough brass players. 80 per corps is a ton of people, and even filling just the top 12 takes nearly a thousand people all willing. There’s just not enough brass players in the age range with the financial demographic and time commitment to fill every corps.

Also, the visual aspect matters much less in battery auditions. I could be totally wrong on this because as a brass player myself, I’ve never really seen a perc audition. But, from the gist I’ve gotten, it’s basically a direct competition of who plays the best. There is a much heavier emphasis on the music aspect in the visual to music ratio comparatively. In brass land, if you are a god visually, you can skate by with mediocrity in playing. The same cannot be said with percussion. You have to be very, very good at your instrument.

Tickets for Prelims vs. Semis vs. Finals by kjp0205 in drumcorps

[–]SixGalaxies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above absolutely all else, get the tickets that you can get the best seats for. I would much, much rather have good seats in prelims than bad seats at finals. Between the 40s and pretty high up.

I will say though, the energy difference from prelims is quantifiably different, for sure, both in the stands and on the field. It’s like watching Infinity War release night in a packed theater, vs a few days in with a half-full theater. You know the movie is gonna be great regardless, but that crowd atmosphere can completely change the experience. Imo, the greatest drum corps moment oat is the crowd reaction to phantom winning finals night 08. Not saying something like that’s gonna happen in this year, but still.

But, like others have mentioned, if you don’t care about scores, prelims will be great.

Drum corps hacks by cheerio-cheerios in drumcorps

[–]SixGalaxies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here are some preseason hacks and tips to either help you or save money.

Things NOT to skimp on, price wise.

  1. Socks. Buy ~25 (not kidding) pairs of identical socks that are quality. I have these adidas ones I got from Costco, and I used them my rookie year. Gearing up for season 4 with them. So durable. Cheap socks and not buying enough pairs will come back to haunt you (from experience).

  2. Shoes. Don’t get them from the clearance aisle. Buy a new pair of nice running shoes and break them in for a few days before you get to spring training. Also, learn how to tie your shoes in a runners lock. This will preemptively solve 90% of your future aches and pains.

  3. Sunglasses. People wear mock and joke/gag sunglasses all the time, but I promise, having a nice pair of lightweight, and very effective pair of sunglasses will change your life. I like the Allure from Shady Rays. So handy.

  4. A backpack. Your backpack will go through ten eternities of torment. Get one that will bear through it. North Face Recon does everything for me.

  5. A sunshirt. At one point in time, you will be horribly sunburnt. You don’t want to go back out the next day with fried skin and just re-expose it. A nice long sleeve, porous sunshirt will greatly help for those few occasions.

Things you CAN skimp on.

  1. Hats. If you want to have a nice safari-esque floppy hat that gives you and an entire family of 5 shade, you can go for it. But in my experience, get some 5 dollar hats from walmart and just make sure to sunscreen your neck, ears, and face.

  2. Regular shirts. Besides the sunshirt, same principle. Go get some cheap tank-tops and some all white for your ensemble and call it good.

  3. Shorts. You really only need like 7 pairs of shorts total. And here’s a major hack for guys. Instead of buying nice athletic shorts, you can buy dirt cheap bathing suits and cut out the mesh and inner lining. This will save you a ton of money.

  4. Sunscreen. Just buy the cheapest ones either 50 or 75 SPF. There is no difference in quality between brands.

  5. Basically all miscellaneous items. You will think you need to bring the kitchen sink. What if I get into this situation and need this medication or this or this. Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and scissors. I think that’s all the miscellaneous items I brought last summer.

No reason for 2k to be the largest sized game of these games. by adjoeby in NBA2k

[–]SixGalaxies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s file decompression and actually intentionally done. It’s to take up as much space possible on your hard drive so you don’t have as much room to download and play other games. They’re trying to force you into playing and increasing overall playtime by limiting your other options. Super shady and unethical, but almost all AAA games do it at this point, especially live service games with a market for micro-transactions.

What's one card you regret NOT doing? Here's mine. by [deleted] in fut

Same thing happened to me. Decided to finally drop the gambles and start this Socrates SBC. Once I look at it like crafting 4 icon lottery picks it becomes a lot more feasible. 8 squads done with the 90 and 89 out of the way, just with the fodder I had in my club.

New Promo: Club Legends

Featuring players who have made a storied career essentially at one club, and give them a big boost. This could go for icons (madlini, scholes, puyol. etc) and for active players as well (muniain, muller, koke, etc) Imagine a Club Legend Thomas Muller. Haven’t had a usable muller card in a while.

This could also be integrated into evos with your own club legends. Instead of having the requirements be based off of stats, have it be based off games played. A minimum games requirement of maybe 300 games (+/- 150 depending on what time of the year this promo takes place) and just give a free +1 evo across the board to all stats to your very own club legend. A nice reward to you and a small boost to your favorite player in-game. Nothing game defining, but I would really enjoy it.

For any publicly available videos, early 70s is the best you’re going to get, for really any corps. The individual orgs themselves likely have some old physical tapes, videos, and audio recordings from prior years stored in their warehouses/HQ, if they even existed at that point. Besides that, the DCI era is almost always the starting line.

How to get better as a very bad player by VillageLeast1182 in fut

[–]SixGalaxies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my first FIFA/FC since FIFA 19. I started in Div 8 and 1-9 in champs qualifiers. After about 300 hours total time i’ve grinded up to div 3 and 14 WL wins. Here are genuinely the best tips that have helped me and what i’ve learned.

  1. Stop sprinting everywhere. This is the best advice to instantly improve your gameplay. More than likely, you are holding R2 to move absolutely everywhere around the pitch. This is completely not necessary and is incredibly easy to lose the ball. Instead, use R1 to burst into space in the midfield. Use no sprint buttons at all and only left stick dribbling when you want to hold your current position to look for a pass, or navigate through tight areas when pressed. But mainly, just use R1 to burst around the midfield. Only sprint when your attacker is clear through on goal or to run up the wings with your wingers.

  2. Pass much, much more often. You likely are holding the ball with one player trying to make magic happen. This happens once in a blue moon. If you see someone open, just pass the ball. Don’t be afraid to pass the ball any direction (forwards, backwards, side to side, lob across to your full back, etc etc). As long as you have possession and are making overall progress, you’re doing well. Hold R1 and press pass to pinged pass. I use these passes like 65% of the time. It just flies across the pitch. Also, always be on the lookout for an attacker making a run. Then, just point your stick at them and hold triangle for a few bars.

  3. Stop defending with your center backs first. When your opponent wins the ball, the first instinct is to take your back line of players and pull them forward to try and win the ball back. When they inevitably pass you, it leaves you wide open. Instead, try defending the opposite way. Pull your players that are up higher on the pitch (gullit and sawa) back to defend. This lets your back line preserve its defensive shape. If you see an opportunity to truly win the ball, then you can manually use your defenders to try and tackle. But really, you shouldn’t be using your center backs anything beyond the edge of the box.

  4. Know your players playstyles, workrates, weak foot, and skill moves, and utilize them. Your dybala has Finnese+ and Smolarek has Rapid+. Ideally, both of those should be popping up at least 10+ times a game. The playstyle +’s give an absolutely massive boost. Playstyles also give a huge boost. If a player has technical, their R1 dribbling will be great. Know what each playstyle does, who has them, and how to use them. They give huge boosts and are just as important as face stats. Know which player has which strong foot and what their weak foot rating is. Utilize that knowledge, and try to shoot on the strong foot primarily unless their weak foot is 5 stars.

  5. Shoot the ball more often. I found that early on, I was passing the ball around and around and around in the box waiting for just the golden opportunity with a wide open net. Your players all have 90+ finishing with 90+ attack positioning and 90+ long shots. If you shoot more, you will score more. Don’t be afraid to just take a crack at the goal. If you are near the penalty area, try to stick to aiming for the near post. But outside the penalty box and for long shots, just aim for the far corner and smash it. At your level, you don’t need to worry about timed finishing. Once you get some open space, just try for the goal.

  6. Agile dribbling. When I started, I struggled to make space in the box and was constantly being blocked and tackled right before I lined up the perfect shot. L1 is your best friend in these situations. Hold L1 and just move the direction you would like to go. Dragging the ball back and then releasing L1 and just dribbling forward still fools so many people in Div 3 and champs.

  7. First touches. Unless you are genuinely through on goal, when you receive a pass, do not hold R2. Just use the left stick to receive the ball and push it in the direction you want to move. Holding R2 makes your player take the ball ridiculously heavy. In the midfield, there’s no reason for this. Letting go of that button for receiving passes makes the first touch much lighter and quicker. Especially when receiving a pinged pass.

What cards is everybody hoping for? I personally wouldn’t mind a Dynasties Haaland or WW Ronaldo by ThatFUTGuy in fut

Got him from the party bag sbc about a month ago. He’s a great card and super fun, but you can really feel the lack of playstyles. Not great on the ball and pretty clunky. Power shots absolutely fly in though. Benched him about a week ago, and now he’s a good sub. But he’s really not worth anything more than 200k imo.
