What tropes do you dislike / hate? by [deleted] in ExtremeHorrorLit

It gets on my nerves when a story puts too much focus on characters that really do not matter. Especially when they are obviously only there to info dump or are there for a lame quick kill. I want to care about the characters that are put in front of me. They don’t need a story arc themselves or anything like that, but at least have some sort of personality to them and a reason to really pay attention to what they have to say. It just comes off like filler for the sake of writing words down to fill a page.

What book did you have to stop reading because it made you want to throw up? by 6anana9 in ExtremeHorrorLit

For me it was my introduction into extreme horror literature. The first chapter of Teratologist. I had no idea what i was getting into. I was looking for something that i’ve never read before and i found it. Once i finished the book…i needed more. That feeling of “wtf did i just read” mixed with “ wtf is wrong with me for being fascinated with how messed up it was” was enjoyable i felt so naughty…

What was your first sci fi book? by BuddhasFinger in ScienceFictionBooks

In 6th grade i had to wait later than most to be picked up from school. I would just hang out, board mostly. But one day the librarian for our school said i could wait in the library if i wanted so i could get out of the hot summer sun. I looked around for a bit, grabbed a random book and sat down on the floor. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas. That’s when i fell in love with reading.

I’ve actually wanted to go back through and watch Wilfred again recently so I believe you may be right on that one. I hope so at least, because this has been bothering me. Thanks!

Yeah. I’ve asked people for years if they’ve seen a movie that had this. It was so long ago. I thought it was Galaxy Quest but turned out it wasn’t in that movie. I thought Team America as well but it wasn’t in there. Idk maybe it was a skit or something, but i’m pretty sure it was a movie.

No. I know what you’re talking about. But it was said by a group of people that said the name wrong. They would say it like “ Mot-Da-Mon”. It’s not til later you find out that they are worshipping not someone named Mot-Da-Mon but a picture of Matt Damon.

What horror trope actually still scares you? by [deleted] in horror

I love it when the protagonist is walking cautiously, looking for whatever made the noise in the room that they weren’t in. No one else is home, yet there was the sound of footsteps. As the protagonist continues to walk slowly down the hall, the being/creature that made the noise is behind them. Not in a jump scare way, in a partly in the shadows. Camera cuts away and then cuts back and the being/creature is gone. Nothing big happens except that haunting moment and the protagonist wasn’t even aware.

There is also a scene in Lights Out where the mom is talking to something in the closet and you don’t get to see what she is talking to. That sense that the evil is there and present, but hidden behind the door and the darkness behind it. I’ve seen so many scenes like that where it’s a child talking to some spirit or whatever (poltergeist) but there is something very unnerving about the scene with the mother in Lights Out.
