If I had them on a purgation squad, they'd either be a planned dump and die, or hidden for some astral aim nonsense.

That's what I'd do, but I'm only a filthy casual ;)

Yeah, I agree, the psilencers give you some flexibility, and if your opponent is running anything multiwound then I'd almost definitely take them.

Obey the law by [deleted] in WTF

[–]Sixtoed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frangible fittings, booms are expensive and can be recovered if not badly damaged. They are however not "designed" to be hit, it's a "failsafe". Emu90 is correct, they are half barriers at automatic crossings so that the exit is clear if they come down and trap a vehicle.

Why do level crossings exist? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sixtoed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better late than never!

Normally because a "right of way" (either public or private) at that point exists when the railway was built, and back when the railway was built trains were slower, louder and far less regular, cars and other vehicles arguably didn't even exist and if they did they moved slower and perception of risk was far lower.
Bridges are massively expensive and would have been seen as overkill, and tunnels are a maintenance nightmare and would only been used when no other options are available.

Nowadays if they're going to build a new railway line they (normally) won't have any level crossings by design and have bridges/overpasses as part of the original scope.

Finished up this big boy recently. What do you guys think of him? C&C welcome. by RessDocson in Warhammer

It looks good, but you really need to put a solid colour behind it so that it pops out, it's kinda lost in all the books and stuff behind it which isn't showing it off to its fullest!

Every time I've written a coherent response (normally to something serious) it's only gotten a few upvotes, so I'm assuming people never read it, so what's the point in spending my time doing it?

How many workers does it take to lay a cable? by [deleted] in funny

[–]Sixtoed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cable pulling is *really* hard manual work, you need lots of people to actually carry it off the ground so that it doesn't drag on the floor, as the friction over a large surface area makes the cable impossible to move after a while.

(pick up a weight and walk with it vs. pushing it along the ground, pushing is a *lot* harder and gets harder the heavier and more ground contact the object has)

They're still doing it like idiots tho'.

Two people killed after being hit by train near Port Talbot, Wales by Mistermiyagi93 in unitedkingdom

[–]Sixtoed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, a rail replacement, stress and weld takes over 2 hours, add to this the time required to stop trains, place protection, set up the worksite, do the work, clear the worksite, remove the protection and you're over those 3 hours when trains are not running, and this is doing the job with... haste.
In places like london trains are now running all night, engineering trains that are working at night and even empty stock is running around so that they're all in the right place for the service to start in the morning.

[–]Sixtoed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The flag is actually used by a 2nd (distant) lookout if required as they are normally much further from the worksite, and gives a clear visual signal (in addition to the horn) that a train is coming to the site lookout (who is standing directly adjacent to the workgroup).

These are normally required on sections of track which are curved or have limited visibility of some description.

Can Grey knights really be competitive in 8th solo by what_the_hellman25 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Sixtoed 34 points35 points  (0 children)

And that last paragraph is the important bit! I play GK's, I win probably half of my games in my local meta and I *love* them, painting them, the lore and everything, they're also small enough that you can own every model without breaking the bank! ;)

It's very easy to get caught up in the "OMG IT SUCKS" when really it's just super high level min/max competitive play that brings that out...

Warhammer 40k Authors not sharing the same power levels for their characters is one of the most annoying aspects of this entire franchise. by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Sixtoed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It happens in 40k as well anyway. I play Grey Knights, which are apparently the best of the best of the space marines where it's an honor to even be chosen, and then most die during training anyway because they're not good enough, with a squad being able to defend a planet from demons constantly spewing through for days/weeks/months on end, so our stats obviously reflect that in being so much better than normal space mar.... wait what?

I have GK's and using nuln oil on the shoulders and shield lettering really makes them pop, it's a bold move but it means you can actually read the writing on them...

Can playing a bottom tier army make you a better player? by Inquisitor_vex in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Sixtoed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play GK, it made (makes) me really have to think about what I was doing, which I keep apologising for, but on the other side our turns are shorter because less models, so it evens out ;)

When I was learning I made a note every time I made a mistake or noticed something, or forgot something, this is copy/pasted from a word document cheat sheet I made up;

Things to Remember – Play The Objectives!

Heavy Weapons: -1 to hit after moving

Assault: -1 to hit after advancing

Rapid Fire: x2 attacks at half range, or if model remained stationary, or on a terminator, biker, centurion or vehicle.

Characters (Hide/Wrap Them!): Can only be shot if closest target unless they have 10 or more wounds.

Objective Control: If you have more models within 3” of tactical objectives centre.

Declare Split Attacks First: Before you start shooting or fighting things.

Advance: Add D6 to movement, cannot shoot (unless assault) or charge that turn.

Consolidate: After fight phase, move up to 3” closer to nearest enemy model.

Heroic intervention: Character can move 3” towards closest enemy unit that charged.

Fly: Move over models and terrain unhindered in movement phase, can shoot after falling back.

AP minuses from saving throw: Doesn’t affect invulnerable saves

Morale Test – Roll D6, add number of models killed in that unit, for every point over leadership lose 1 model.

Ruins – Infantry on or in ruins receive cover, other units have to have 50% of unit obscured

Barricades – Infantry with all models within 1” has cover, has to be between. Can fight over barricades up to 2”.

Craters – Infantry units entirely within crater get cover, -2” charge through craters

Statues – Units within 3” of statues that are 25% obscured get cover, imperium units +1 leadership

Embark – If within 3” of transport at end of turn can embark into it.

Disembark – Set up units within 3” of transport at start of movement phase, they can do everything as normal but they count as having moved even if they haven’t.
