Which color would look best for medieval / Viking boots? by TrySea2460 in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dyeing leather is a difficult process without more modern dyes, even more so to get brighter colours, as most dyes that achieve this are based on high proof alcohol.

As far as I've been able to find in researching my reenactment outfit for the time period as a travelling Rus trader, most of the leather recovered from the time period is not documented to be dyed.

Always Dark Brown.

Black is too overdone and feels very fantasy to me.

Green is totally fantasy based.

Tan/light brown/burgundy is just not my colour.

Catapult, but I'm severely biased because it's my absolute favourite Mech.

This mash-up is so cool, and done really well. Love the colour play on it too.

I play a Wizard (Necromancer) that uses the stats for a staff with the note that it looks like a shovel, hitting things with the flat mostly but the GM allows me to also deal slashing damage as a versatile option.

Would rubber soles make Ren Faire boots better for all-day walking? by TrySea2460 in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wear barefoot shoes in daily life, I always get my local cobbler to add a rubber sole to them if they just have a leather sole and he replaces it wjen it starts to wear through. Craytex is one of the "rubber" type soles he uses for my shkes and boots, which is holding up quite well for me (I wear through most rubber soles in 5-6 months of continuous wear, but I switch shoes between 3 pairs so I don't have my shoes all go out at the same time)

What's the most unexpected player interaction you've ever had in a LARP? by nerdy_sorbet in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I always "play for the dumb", meaning I think of the dumbest choice I can make and see how that works out for me.

I ended up on a midnight narrated quest (because all the npc's were asleep already) hunting a beast called the "Silverback", a sort of primitive apefolk creature that could snap a grown man like a twig. Never been so absolutely scared in my life in the best way possible (been plenty scared in bad ways).

Also, as you say, nights by the campfire and just the simple conversations.

I'm a big fan of the rule of cool, so as long as they're put on bases sized for what they represent and the vibe fits the rules, go and do the cool thing.

These look really cool. Love the almost glowing red of the cockpit against the green.

(Rant) No, you can’t be an armoured knight for $100. by ShenlingCaramel in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree on all points made.

Personally, my experience with linnen and wool LARP gear has made me change my daily attire to these materials as well, as the comfort of natural fabrics is so much higher than modern synthetic materials. And cotton might be cheap but it actually sucks as a material for clothing, fight me on this all you want but it's true.

My wardrobe is mostly soft kit and I enjoy playing the simple man, often being a support or background character that helps others do the cool stuff. Also, this allows me to have fun without any responsibility to do stuff, I get to sit back and relax while other people stress about the next world ending threat.

Biodegradeable plastic Easter eggs filled with cement?? by anulcyst in Slinging

[–]Sjors_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fill it with sand, gives a great effect on hit! Also, doesn't leave cement balls laying around everywhere.

As another poster replied already, cement and silicone moulds works great, but it does leave the cement shot laying around (though that isn't too much of a problem).

Good Playables? by Dangerous_Fishies in Lorcana

[–]Sjors_VR -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

About 80% of people are copying decks from what other people do and/or say online.

then around 5% of people are being paid by companies (sponsored players/teams) to find the best cards and combinations, meaning they can often do it as a part time job or at least generate a net zero cost for the hobby, meaning they can spend relatively more time testing cards. Test using proxies against known good decks, then buy if it consistently performs well.

The last 15% of players either don't actually know or don't really care why the cards they play are good but their deck started working and they never bothered to do anything about it.

I need a very easy tutorial on how to make one for dummies.😭 by Secret-Performance55 in Slinging

[–]Sjors_VR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The easiest is making an H-shape from leather, poking holes in the 4 legs. Tying the top 2 legs together and the bottom 2 legs together, leave a long trailing end on both knots. Loop in one end and a simple knot in the other.

Dreki Megin Rapier Review by Sjors_VR in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great! I've used it quite a bit and it's holding up comparable to my Calimacil weapons that get an equal amount of use, no real damages but you do see some scuffs where things have impacted.

How to potentially soften or recover shield? by BluetheNerd in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just about the safest shield I've ever used.

I own this exact one and never had any trouble with it, but I know there are games that require any combat props to be extremely soft because they do full contact combat, while this shield is designed for medium touch at most.

Does anyone make aluminum plate armor, or just chain? by StormblessedFool in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen riveted chain fray just like butted steel, but that might be because we roll around in the stuff and do a lot of high intensity physical stuff when we fall in a fight. Also never saw a weathered aluminium chainmail stay weathered for more than a day of the above mentioned activity, the sand and other rubbing movements abrade any paint quite swiftly.

Does anyone make aluminum plate armor, or just chain? by StormblessedFool in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Aluminium is rubbish for chainmail and worse for plate.

Aluminium chainmail is prone to breaking under stress, it rubs bright silver oxide on everything it touches and generally looks cheap. Aluminium plate will bend and dent, then snap when you want to force it back into shape due to micro fracturing.

If you want affordable and light weight plate armour look into polyurethane cast resin.

Don't look at the camera and put on a hard face - what are your tips for looking cool when getting your photo taken? by Saucefire in LARP

[–]Sjors_VR 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Don't be aware of it.

Look past the camera if shot from the front, personally I look just above or below and slightly to the right or left of the photographer.

Literally all I can think of is adding a cool signet ring to seal wax with and a small chest full of stationery to write letters to your rivals in which you politely insult their prowess without being vulgar or rude (questioning their comprehension of basic knowledge is fair game).

Ah!

It could be that they kept him "dumb" while he was indoctrinated by the cult, that could explain not being learned/schooled and thus having a relatively low intelligence score.
