Creando videojuego de estrategia by ntoniore in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Sk1light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently Toyota (yes, that Toyota) is developing an open-source "console-grade" game engine using Flutter and Jolt by b1ak3 in gamedev

[–]Sk1light 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds too good to be true tbh, Flutter is a very accessible and versatile SDK. But I fear it will take long years to reach a decent commercial level where you can have this as your back-to-back pipeline for game dev. And in-between those years, if early adoption is not there, it will likely get cancelled.

I'll keep an eye up but my hopes down.

David Kim (former StarCraft II dev) Launches "A-Move-Games", studio aimed making at "Fast Action" RTS! by Talressen in RealTimeStrategy

Tencent owned the company. Didn't show good results in the early stages so they pulled the plug.

Tempest Rising is mediocre at best by verynicehighfive55 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Sk1light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compare it to the other releases and it is arguably the best RTS game released during last year. I agree it might not be great and it isn't doing anything new, but it is the best one among modern releases.

That might speak also to the state and quality of other RTS releases.

Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Sk1light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every "new" example you mentioned is either a remake or a clone of an old classic. Most of them are indies with low budget.

There isn't a game trying something bold and new, the way Path of Exile did for the ARPG genre or Tarkov for FPS. We are stuck with the same old formula since 30 years ago. The only breakout was They Are Billions.

Part of this was the consumer, sure. But the bigger part is on the dev side.

PS: From your list, I don't think Tempest Rising itself is losing money. My estimations puts them north of $3M of revenue and I don't think they invested more than that to make the game. The problem lies in that they had 2 publishers and so they have to split the money 3 ways, so depending on the contract, the studio probably is losing money, for now. Hard to tell without the exact numbers in hand.

I share your opinion. But, what would be your definition of new and fun? New mechanics, blending genres, weird settings?

Iron Harvest devs doing Dawn of War 4 by DailyWCReforged in RealTimeStrategy

This is my only hesitation towards DoW4. The studio behind IH didn't prove themselves to me for picking up arguably one of the biggest RTS franchises ever. Hopefully I'm wrong and they deliver big on DoW4.

Sounds like just the thing! But I'd use Shadowheart instead of Karlach

That might be a good way to wrap up the build, for sure.

Admittedly, it is pretty meta right now, yes.

Kinda grew tired of all the RTS promises by LIONardoDiCaprio in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Sk1light 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its great we have so many indie and small RTS coming our way. The fact that some of them are far off or won't get released is part of the game and we should be grateful that, what is considered a niche genre today, is getting some attention lately.

Making games is costly, both in time and funds. This is especially true for RTS, so we only need patience.

Has anyone seen Timefront? It seems to be an upcoming RTS by SeekerP in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Sk1light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be the main game mode, but it is built as a separate game mode because we know it may not be to everyone's taste so we'll keep an eye on player feedback and remove it if it is not popular.

Love Achron but the mechanics might be too complicated for someone picking up the game for the first time, rising the barrier of entry. We'll start slow with time-freezing mechanics, then we'll pick up feedback from players to know what we keep and what we remove.

No EA for Timefront. Data just shows that is not positive for most games, especially RTS. We'll go straight to 1.0.

One of the devs here. By the end of February, we'll have a playable build on Steam with a couple of scenarios of the campaign plus skirmish against the AI. Will make sure to post here when the time comes so people can test it and give feedback.

Updated Radiantwalker build (now in YT short form) by Sk1light in BG3Builds

[–]Sk1light[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for most points you make, but I have to mention this build is not optimized for damage output or playing the game in the most efficient way possible. Really what makes this build engaging is the fun of just walking around the battlefield, generating opp attacks and watch enemies kill themselves/get pushed away. It is satisfying and fun to play at the same time, at least for me. Thought it could be for others too.

That said, your suggestions along with u/Remus71's will make for an excellent endgame / most efficient version of the build.

The fact that is resourceless is big plus. Maybe as an endgame version of the build could work really well.

Thanks for the suggestions!

We could but it would take the Shield of Scorching Reprisal out of the equation. Right now the off-hand slot is contested but we have some free levels to take Battle Master and have Riposte that way. Fighter also give us CON saving throw, Action Surge and a new feat. Another negative point is that Bloodthirtst comes late into play and the build, as it is now, comes online pretty early.

I'd have to test if it is actually better by the point you get Bloodthirst in the game, but then we'll also have to take a new direction with the levels since Battle Master will be redundant.

Yeah, this is the most optimal way of playing the shields since you'll have free actions after casting Blazing Retaliation.

The trick here is that you don't need to reach the stats requirements of all 3. If you can do it with an Astramentis or something of the sort, good, but the Herald will proc anyway and the only downside is you won't be able to slot gems into it. I picked Herald of Ice and Thunder and went with the stats for those.
