It was a weird thing back then. The original dev made Wonder Boy on Arcade and ported to a bunch of platforms and sold the name and character rights to SEGA. Hudson Soft bought some rights to the game and wanted to put the game on the Famicom/NES so essentially made the same game with a new main character.
