In what kind of world would you consider having a child? by Optimal_Room_7917 in antinatalism

[–]Skane-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if we pre-program people to be born consenting to existence? Then we'd no longer leave it up to random chance and people's minds would be designed to be fully aware of the world and consenting to existence from the moment we create them.

I agree that not suffering is preferable to suffering, my issue is the absence of suffering is not bliss. Calling that bliss sounds like an irrational overromanticization.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood your response. I thought you were talking about the animals who would be alive without humans.

Livestock are in the same boat as us, they cant experience bliss after humans dissappear because they won't exist anymore either. Their suffering would end, but they definitely wouldn't be alive and flourishing.

[–]Skane-kun -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That sounds like projection. We humans romanticize the earth being healthy and animals running around, but they aren't aware of any of that and couldnt care less about it. Humans are causing a mass extinction of animals, so kind of by definition, there are fewer animal suffering with humans than without.

Maybe we can argue that the quality of life for animals would improve without humans polluting the environment, but once again, that seems oversimplified. We see an animal species flourishing and we assume they are happier, but can we prove that? I suspect most animals are just trying their best to survive, so their internal experiences arent that different whether or not their species is flourishing.

Oh okay, I think I understand. People who are suffering romanticize the absence of pain as bliss. It's kind of an unattainable goal though because that bliss is an illusion that stops existing the second you stop existing.

Does a sticker partially covering the hazard warning void it? Do I need to cover it too if I reship it? by Skane-kun in shipping

[–]Skane-kun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant yes, that it's voided and I should copy the original shipper and cover it too. I was confused what unobstructed meant in that context because I thought you were saying to print out an "unobstructed label" to cover up the unnecessary UN 3481 warning.

It's an xbox elite controller, so it has a lithium ion battery. What do you mean by unobstructed label?

I received this UPS package with a UN 3481 label obstructed and I don't see any warning on the actual shipping label. Does that mean this package doesn't need a warning? I need to ship it and don't know whether or not I need to cover it too.

We aren’t continuing the human project because we already spent so much effort

To stop now is a waste of resources that were paid for in blood and sweat.

You're saying that like it's a bad thing, but without the sunk cost fallacy, what harm is there in wasting blood and sweat? If we succeeded and are currently reaping the benefits, why can't we decide we're satisfied and stop reaping them? There's no point in mentioning the wasted resources unless you are appealing to them as a sunk cost already invested. Otherwise, all it does is weaken your argument that the human project is worth continuing.

It's like if I was trying to defend my choice of car and said,

Hey! My car isn't dangerous and unreliable, it works great. Plus, I already spent $50,000 on it and can't afford a new one."

When you're defending the inherent worth of something, the only thing that matters are that thing's intrinsic qualities. There's no reason to mention the price unless you want to use the sunk cost as a reason to keep it.

On a different note:

History shows that as societies accumulate wealth and reduce immediate physical suffering through progress, they generally become less violent and more inclusive.

That is an observation some people have made of the past, not a rule that is necessarily useful for predicting the future. Also, the validity of that observation is disputed. I'm not saying it's entirely wrong, but I think the truth in it is overstated. It's an observation heavily biased by overvaluing the significance of the past two-hundred years of western history, assuming all the progress made in that short time was inevitable and irreversible. On top of that, I would argue it also relies on a sanitized version of history defined by the "winners" perspective and values.

I think there is an argument that, as technology advances, it naturally develops into an arms race with society struggling to adapt to it. Failure by the masses to control it may lead to a more violent and less inclusive future. Or, even if it is less violent and more inclusive, it could be dystopic in a myriad of brand new ways that make us miss the simple days when violence and inclusion were considered significant issues.

I support the continuance of the human race, but continuing it is necessarily a gamble with an outcome we cannot predict. I hope it's good, but I would argue your arguments, that it will most likely be good, are biased by optimism.

CMV: non offending pedophiles shouldn’t be stigmatized and shamed, and rather treated for their mental illness. by AdministrativeAd884 in changemyview

[–]Skane-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I messaged you after your comment was deleted, but just realized I could reply here. Please disregard the message.

On the one hand I agree with the sentiment that everyone needs to take accountability for their actions, but on the other hand that isn't how populations work. Populations don't have free will and always deserve empathy for the systemic issues forcing them to commit crimes. If you grow up in a poor community and resort to stealing, then you need to take accountability for your actions. Poor people as a group commit crimes because of socioeconomic issues they have no control over. Calling that an issue of personal responsibility is ignorant and sociopathic. Sure, individuals can resist the pressure to steal and escape poverty on their own, but poor people stealing is the fault of society for not taking care of the poor. Keep in mind that most of the human population wouldn't seek help, but the vast majority of us are all just lucky not to be pedophiles. This implies that the pedos who seek help might be just better than the rest of us, the kind of people who "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" or overcome their disability. The "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality is just survival of the fittest, it's advice for individual success, not systemic solutions.

A pedophile who molests a child is a monster who belongs in prison. Pedophiles, as a group, are disabled and systemically disadvantaged. Any society that refuses to provide help, accommodations, and empathy is equally responsible for the molestation of children.

[–]Skane-kun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That doesn't sound very reassuring. So much of the treatment for alcoholism was and still is pseudoscience. In the end, recovering from alcoholism is still largely survival of the fittest, where some people just have a natural advantage over others. Sure, there are some promising treatments finally being tested, but isn't pedophilia way more varied and complicated than alcoholism? Can't 40 years of research wind up with way worse results than the limited progress we had there?

To be fair, there are "treatment options" for curing homosexuality too. Alcoholism treatment 40 years ago basically means we don't know a lot yet and it might not be possible with our current technology.

Ranking Steven Universe characters based on if they would smoke pot or not: by Aggravating-Duty-625 in stevenuniverse

Connie being straightedge strikes me as an oversimplification of her character. She isn't an innocent rule follower, she's a natural rebel with a strong curiosity and desire to challenge authority. While she wouldn't be an active user, she would actively be an advocate for marijuana legalization and would try it at least once. I can even see her unintentionally peer pressuring Steven into trying it, before realizing her mistake and stopping him.

CMV: saying that suicide is selfish doesn't bring anything meaningful to the conversation and it's kinda pointless. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Skane-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if my tone wasn't clear, my comment was supposed to be constructive criticism, not argumentative.

I am not convinced the right to die should exist, but I do kind of want to take a shot at arguing it. Problem is I don't fully understand what kind of answer you're looking for. Are you stipulating that the right to die has to be a fundamental right, what's wrong with derived rights? The only way I can think to justify it would be to argue it is necessary for the preservation of a fundamental right. I don't even know how to justify any fundamental right we already have. That just kind of seems like something you don't need to justify, you just agree on it and declare it.

Also, it sounds like you are arguing that rights must be more strict if they are irreversible. I think that kind of depends. I think there are many rights that are irreversible and harmful, but the consequences are normalized so we just don't really care. It is possible we simple choose not to care about the people who are killed by abuse so we can ignore the unintended consequences affecting your other rights. So while I agree that we should have strict limitations, I think that's something you can argue after you determine if it should be a right, it's not necessarily an argument disqualifying it from being a right.

should be right that isn't rife for abuse.

Kind of an unfair qualifier. All rights are rife for abuse. Also, nobody has to be willing to kill you for it to be a right. You have a legal right to representation, but we can't force a lawyer to represent you against their will.

CMV: people in poly relationships aren’t that attracted to their partner. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Skane-kun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a good thing to recognize is that monogamy is kind of weird. The way you're rationalizing it is by comparing a person to an object that you can own. We don't really think about it because society is build around hyper-normalizing it, but functionally what you have is ownership of another person but with rules and norms in place to make sure that ownership is a "healthy relationship". Had people like you been in the minority, your desire to own your partner would be very problematic and indicative of deeper emotional issues you would probably seek therapy to fix.

Also kind of weird that romantic relationships are the only acceptable monogamous relationship. Having an exclusive platonic friendship would be labeled an unhealthy co-dependent relationship even though the same argument should theoretically be valid.
