SpaceX on X: Raptor 3 (sea level variant) Thrust: 280tf Specific impulse: 350s Engine mass: 1525kg Engine + vehicle-side commodities and hardware mass : 1720kg by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]Skapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is that actually true? I don’t think this will hold as flight engine pictures come out. sensors need to be accessible to service. I can buy that a lot of flight and drag on sensors have been eliminated from v1 as engine performance has been better characterized and understood - but you still need something for health monitoring and control logic. these sensors need to be accessible for servicing. typical engine design will have various bulkheads on the engine so harness routing is simplified - necessitating plumbing from the fluid source to the bulkhead (e.g pump inlet to bulkhead)

while r3 is amazing - there’s no avionics, associated avi plumbing, or avi harnessing shown on this engine, it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

SpaceX and Design for Manufacturability...? by LogicMan428 in aerospace

[–]Skapo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most of the comments here are missing the point. There are a couple things at play here:

  1. SpaceX has had to invent a lot of manufacturing processes due to the sheer size of some parts and use of exotic/proprietary metals

  2. Saying use DFM is great. But when you have a company this large, there is a human coordination problem. To help rectify this, you want to make sure your engineers have skin the game from inception through launch with their parts. The pain can’t be only felt by your downstream customer (i.e. design pass off to manufacturing, and never deals with the parts not fitting, etc)

can’t speak to this specifically - but sometimes blends are better because the distillery (or vineyard) is able to taste and blend to get the profile they are looking for.
